1 C uando Ajab le contó a Jezabel todo lo que Elías había hecho, y cómo había degollado a los profetas de Baal,

And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and in detail how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

2 J ezabel mandó un mensajero a Elías, a que le dijera: «¡Que los dioses me castiguen, y más aún, si mañana a esta misma hora no te he cortado la cabeza como lo hiciste tú con los profetas de Baal.»

And Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah saying, So do the gods, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to-morrow about this time!

3 A l verse en peligro, Elías huyó para ponerse a salvo. Se fue a Berseba, en la región de Judá, y allí dejó a su criado.

And when he saw, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

4 S e internó en el desierto y, después de caminar todo un día, se sentó a descansar debajo de un enebro. Con deseos de morirse, exclamó: «Señor, ¡ya no puedo más! ¡Quítame la vida, pues no soy mejor que mis antepasados!»

And he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a certain broom-bush, and requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough: now, Jehovah, take my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

5 S e recostó entonces bajo la sombra del enebro, y se quedó dormido. Más tarde, un ángel vino y lo despertó. Le dijo: «Levántate, y come.»

And he lay down and slept under the broom-bush. And behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, Arise, eat!

6 C uando Elías se sentó, vio cerca de su cabecera un pan que se cocía sobre las brasas y una vasija con agua. Comió y bebió, y se volvió a dormir.

And he looked, and behold, at his head was a cake, baked on hot stones, and a cruse of water. And he ate and drank, and lay down again.

7 P ero el ángel del Señor volvió por segunda vez, lo despertó y le dijo: «Levántate y come, que todavía tienes un largo camino por recorrer.»

And the angel of Jehovah came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise, eat; for the journey is too great for thee.

8 E lías comió y bebió y recuperó sus fuerzas, y con aquella comida pudo caminar durante cuarenta días con sus noches, hasta llegar a Horeb, el monte de Dios.

And he arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God.

9 B uscó una cueva donde pasar la noche, y allí el Señor le dijo: «¿Qué haces aquí, Elías?»

And there he went into a cave, and lodged there. And behold, the word of Jehovah to him, and he said to him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

10 Y Elías respondió: «Es muy grande mi amor por ti, Señor, Dios de las ejércitos. Los israelitas se han olvidado de tu pacto, han destruido tus altares, han matado a tus profetas, ¡y sólo quedo yo! Pero me andan buscando para quitarme la vida.»

And he said, I have been very jealous for Jehovah the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I am left, I alone, and they seek my life, to take it away.

11 E ntonces el Señor le dijo: «Sal de tu cueva y espérame en el monte, delante de mí.» Elías pudo sentir que el Señor estaba pasando, porque se desató un viento poderoso que a su paso desgajaba los montes y partía las rocas. Pero el Señor no estaba en el huracán. Tras el viento vino un terremoto. Pero el Señor no estaba en el terremoto.

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before Jehovah. And behold, Jehovah passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before Jehovah: Jehovah was not in the wind. And after the wind, an earthquake: Jehovah was not in the earthquake.

12 T ras el terremoto vino un fuego. Pero el Señor tampoco estaba en el fuego. Luego vino un silvo apacible y delicado,

And after the earthquake, a fire: Jehovah was not in the fire. And after the fire, a soft gentle voice.

13 y cuando Elías lo percibió, se cubrió el rostro con su manto y se quedó a la entrada de la cueva; entonces escuchó una voz que le preguntaba: «¿Qué haces aquí, Elías?»

And it came to pass, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, a voice to him and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

14 Y Elías respondió: «Es muy grande mi amor por ti, Señor, Dios de los ejércitos. Los israelitas se han apartado de tu pacto, han destruido tus altares, han matado a tus profetas, ¡y sólo quedo yo! ¡Pero me andan buscando para quitarme la vida!»

And he said, I have been very jealous for Jehovah the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I am left, I alone, and they seek my life, to take it away.

15 E l Señor le dijo: «Regresa por donde viniste, y ve por el desierto camino a Damasco. Cuando llegues allá, busca a Jazael y úngelo como rey de Siria.

And Jehovah said to him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus; and when thou comest, anoint Hazael king over Syria;

16 L uego busca a Jehú hijo de Nimsi, y úngelo como rey de Israel; y a Eliseo hijo de Safat, del pueblo de Abel Meholá, úngelo para que ocupe tu lugar como profeta.

and Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint prophet in thy stead.

17 S i alguien escapa de la espada de Jazael, Jehú lo matará; y si alguien escapa de la espada de Jehú, Eliseo se encargará de que muera.

And it shall come to pass, him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay; and him that escapeth the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.

18 Y o voy a hacer que queden siete mil israelitas que nunca se arrodillaron ante Baal, ni jamás besaron su estatua.» Llamamiento de Eliseo

Yet I have left seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth that hath not kissed him.

19 C uando Elías salió de la cueva para dirigirse a Damasco, en el camino se encontró con Eliseo hijo de Safat, que estaba arando el campo con doce yuntas; él llevaba la última. Cuando Elías pasó cerca de él, echó sobre él su manto.

And he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was ploughing twelve yokes before him, and he with the twelfth; and Elijah went over to him, and cast his mantle on him.

20 E ntonces Eliseo dejó la yunta y corrió tras Elías, pero le dijo: «Permíteme despedirme de mi padre y de mi madre y besarlos; después de eso te seguiré.» Y Elías le respondió: «Puedes ir. Yo no te lo voy a impedir.»

And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and I will follow thee. And he said to him, Go back again; for what have I done to thee?

21 E ntonces Eliseo fue a su casa, tomó un par de bueyes y los mató. Con la leña del arado coció la carne, e invitó al pueblo al banquete. Después se levantó y se fue tras Elías, y se dedicó a servirle.

And he returned back from him, and took the yoke of oxen, and killed them, and boiled their flesh with the implements of the oxen, and gave to the people, and they ate. And he arose and went after Elijah, and ministered to him.
