1 J osías tenía ocho años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó en Jerusalén treinta y un años.

Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem.

2 H izo lo recto a los ojos del Señor y siguió los pasos de su antepasado David, sin apartarse ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda. Reformas de Josías

And he did what was right in the sight of Jehovah, and walked in the ways of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand nor to the left.

3 A los ocho años de su reinado, cuando aún era un jovencito, Josías comenzó a buscar al Dios de David su padre. A los doce años comenzó a limpiar a Judá y a Jerusalén, quitando los lugares altos y las imágenes de Asera, y las esculturas e imágenes fundidas.

And in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father; and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the Asherahs, and the graven images, and the molten images.

4 Q uitaron de su vista los altares de los baales, e hizo pedazos las imágenes del sol, que estaban puestas encima; despedazó también las imágenes de Asera y las esculturas y estatuas fundidas, hasta hacerlas polvo, y el polvo lo esparció sobre los sepulcros de aquellos que les habían ofrecido sacrificios.

And they broke down the altars of the Baals in his presence; and the sun-pillars that were on high above them he cut down; and the Asherahs and the graven images and the molten images he broke in pieces, and made dust and strewed it upon the graves of those that had sacrificed to them;

5 Q uemó además sobre sus altares los huesos de los sacerdotes, y limpió a Judá y a Jerusalén.

and he burned the bones of the priests upon their altars, and purged Judah and Jerusalem.

6 L o mismo hizo en las ciudades de Manasés, Efraín, Simeón y hasta Neftalí, y en los lugares vecinos.

And in the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon, even to Naphtali, in their ruins round about;

7 U na vez que terminó de derribar los altares y las imágenes de Asera, y de romper y desmenuzar las esculturas, y de hacer pedazos todos los ídolos en todo Israel, volvió a Jerusalén. Hallazgo del libro de la ley

and he broke down the altars, and beat the Asherahs and the graven images into powder, and cut down all the sun-pillars throughout the land of Israel, and returned to Jerusalem.

8 A los dieciocho años de su reinado, cuando ya había limpiado el país y el templo, Josías envió a Safán hijo de Azalía, al gobernador de la ciudad Maseías, y al canciller Yoaj hijo de Joacaz, a que repararan el templo del Señor su Dios.

And in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he purged the land and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the chronicler, to repair the house of Jehovah his God.

9 É stos se presentaron ante el sumo sacerdote Hilcías, y le dieron el dinero que había sido llevado al templo del Señor, y que los levitas que cuidaban la puerta habían recibido de manos de Manasés y de Efraín y de todo el remanente de Israel, de todo Judá y Benjamín, y de los habitantes de Jerusalén.

And they came to Hilkijah the high priest, and they delivered the money that had been brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin, and of the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

10 S e lo entregaron personalmente a quienes realizaban las obras y eran mayordomos en el templo del Señor, los cuales lo iban entregando a los que hacían las obras y trabajaban en el templo del Señor, para reparar y restaurar el templo.

And they gave into the hand of them that did the work, that had the oversight of the house of Jehovah; and they gave it to the workmen who wrought in the house of Jehovah to reinstate and repair the house:

11 L o daban también a los carpinteros y canteros para que compraran piedra de cantería y madera para los armazones, así como para el enmaderado de los edificios que los reyes de Judá habían destruido.

they gave to the carpenters and the builders, to buy hewn stone, and timber for the joists, and to floor the houses that the kings of Judah had destroyed.

12 E stos hombres procedían en la obra con fidelidad. Para activar las obras, sus mayordomos eran Yajat y Abdías, levitas de los hijos de Merari, y Zacarías y Mesulán, de los hijos de Coat; de los levitas, todos los que sabían tocar instrumentos musicales.

And the men did the work faithfully. And over them were appointed Jahath and Obadiah, Levites, of the children of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the children of the Kohathites, for the oversight; and all these Levites were skilled in instruments of music.

13 T ambién supervisaban a los cargadores, y eran los mayordomos de los encargados de toda clase de obra. Entre los levitas había escribas, gobernadores y porteros.

They were also over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that worked in any manner of service. And of the Levites were the scribes, and officers, and doorkeepers.

14 M ientras se sacaba del templo del Señor el dinero que había sido llevado allí, el sacerdote Hilcías halló el libro de la ley del Señor, que Moisés había dejado.

And when they brought out the money that had been brought into the house of Jehovah, Hilkijah the priest found the book of the law of Jehovah by Moses.

15 A l informar acerca de esto, Hilcías le entregó el libro al escriba Safán, y le dijo: «He hallado en el templo del Señor el libro de la ley.»

Then Hilkijah spoke and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of Jehovah. And Hilkijah gave the book to Shaphan.

16 S afán llevó el libro al rey, y mientras le contaba lo del hallazgo le dijo: «Tus siervos han cumplido con todo lo que les fue encomendado.

And Shaphan carried the book to the king. And moreover he brought the king word again saying, All that was committed to the hand of thy servants, they do;

17 H an reunido el dinero que se hallaba en el templo del Señor, y lo han entregado a los encargados y a los que hacen las obras.

and they have emptied out the money that was found in the house of Jehovah, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and into the hand of the workmen.

18 A demás, el sacerdote Hilcías me ha entregado un libro.» Dicho esto, el escriba Safán leyó el libro al rey, al tiempo que se lo entregaba.

And Shaphan the scribe informed the king saying, Hilkijah the priest has given me a book. And Shaphan read out of it before the king.

19 T an pronto como el rey oyó las palabras de la ley, se rasgó las vestiduras

And it came to pass when the king heard the words of the law, that he rent his garments.

20 y dio las siguientes órdenes a Hilcías, a Ajicán hijo de Safán, a Abdón hijo de Micaía, al escriba Safán, y a su siervo Asaías:

And the king commanded Hilkijah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king, saying,

21 « En cuanto a las palabras del libro que se ha hallado, vayan y consulten al Señor por mí y por el remanente de Israel y de Judá. Ciertamente, grande es la ira del Señor que ha caído sobre nosotros, pues nuestros padres no obedecieron la palabra del Señor, ni actuaron conforme a todo lo que está escrito en él.»

Go, inquire of Jehovah for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book which is found; for great is the wrath of Jehovah that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of Jehovah, to do according to all that is written in this book.

22 E ntonces Hilcías y la gente del rey fueron a ver a la profetisa Julda, que vivía en el segundo barrio de Jerusalén. Julda era la esposa de Salún hijo de Ticva, hijo de Jarjás, el encargado de las vestiduras. En cuanto le repitieron las palabras antes dichas,

And Hilkijah and they that the king went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tokehath, son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe: now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the second quarter; and they spoke with her to that effect.

23 e lla respondió: «El Señor y Dios de Israel ha dicho así: “Díganle a quien los ha enviado a mí, que yo, el Señor,

And she said to them, Thus saith Jehovah the God of Israel: Tell the man that sent you to me,

24 v oy a mandar la calamidad sobre este lugar y sobre sus habitantes, y todas las maldiciones que están escritas en el libro que leyeron delante del rey de Judá,

Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah.

25 p orque ellos me han abandonado y han ofrecido sacrificios a dioses extraños; han provocado mi ira con todas las obras de sus manos. Por lo tanto, mi ira se derramará sobre este lugar, y no se apagará.

Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my fury shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.

26 P ero digan de mi parte al rey de Judá, que los ha enviado a consultarme, que yo, el Señor y Dios de Israel, he dicho: ‘Puesto que prestaste atención a las palabras del libro

But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Jehovah, thus shall ye say to him: Thus saith Jehovah the God of Israel touching the words which thou hast heard:

27 a cerca de este lugar y de sus habitantes, y al oírlas te conmoviste de corazón y te humillaste delante de mí, y te rasgaste las vestiduras y lloraste en mi presencia, yo también te he oído.’ —Palabra del Señor.

Because thy heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy garments and weep before me, I also have heard, saith Jehovah.

28 ” Yo te pondré junto con tus padres, y serás sepultado en paz, y tus ojos no verán todo el mal que voy a traer sobre este lugar y sobre sus habitantes.”» En cuanto ellos comunicaron al rey la respuesta,

Behold, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof. And they brought the king word again.

29 e l rey ordenó que se reunieran todos los ancianos de Judá y de Jerusalén.

And the king sent and gathered all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.

30 E ntonces el rey se dirigió al templo del Señor, acompañado por todos los hombres de Judá y los habitantes de Jerusalén, y por los sacerdotes, los levitas y todo el pueblo, desde el mayor hasta el más pequeño, y leyó en voz alta todas las palabras del libro del pacto que había sido hallado en el templo del Señor.

And the king went up into the house of Jehovah, and all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests and the Levites, and all the people, great and small; and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which had been found in the house of Jehovah.

31 A llí mismo, delante del Señor, el rey se puso de pie y se comprometió a ir en pos del Señor y a cumplir sus mandamientos, testimonios y estatutos con todo su corazón y con toda su alma, y a poner en práctica las palabras del pacto que estaban escritas en aquel libro.

And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before Jehovah, to walk after Jehovah, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all his heart and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that are written in this book.

32 H izo también que se comprometieran a ello todos los que estaban en Jerusalén y en Benjamín, y los habitantes de Jerusalén cumplieron con el pacto de Dios, el Dios de sus padres.

And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.

33 L uego Josías quitó de toda la tierra de los israelitas todo objeto repugnante, e hizo que todos los que se hallaban en Israel sirvieran al Señor su Dios. Y mientras Josías vivió, ellos no dejaron de seguir al Señor y Dios de sus padres.

And Josiah removed all the abominations out of all the countries that belonged to the children of Israel, and made to serve all that were found in Israel,—to serve Jehovah their God: all his days they did not depart from following Jehovah, the God of their fathers.
