1 M ientras Esdras estaba en el templo de Dios, de rodillas y orando, llorando y confesando sus pecados, una gran multitud de israelitas se le unió; eran hombres, mujeres y niños, que lloraban amargamente.

And while Ezra prayed, and made confession, weeping and falling down before the house of God, there were gathered to him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children; for the people wept very much.

2 E ntonces Secanías hijo de Yejiel, que era de la familia de Elam, le dijo a Esdras: «Hemos pecado contra nuestro Dios. Hemos tomado por esposas a mujeres extranjeras, de los pueblos de estas tierras. No obstante, creo que los israelitas aún tenemos esperanza.

And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, answered and said to Ezra, We have acted unfaithfully toward our God, and have taken foreign wives of the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope for Israel concerning this thing.

3 H agamos con nuestro Dios el pacto de despedir a todas esas mujeres que tenemos por esposas, lo mismo que a sus hijos, y cumplamos la ley, en conformidad con el consejo que nos has dado y el de los que temen los mandamientos de nuestro Dios.

And now let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of lord, and of those that tremble at the commandments of our God; and let it be done according to the law.

4 L evántate, y manos a la obra, que ésa es tu responsabilidad. Tú, pon todo tu empeño, que nosotros te apoyaremos.»

Arise, for this matter is incumbent on thee, and we will be with thee: be of good courage, and do.

5 E ntonces Esdras se levantó y tomó juramento a los jefes de los sacerdotes y de los levitas, y a todo el pueblo de Israel, para que se comprometieran a cumplir todo lo que habían dicho.

Then Ezra arose, and made the chiefs of the priests, of the Levites, and of all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word. And they swore.

6 L uego, salió del templo y se dirigió a la habitación de Johanán hijo de Eliasib, y una vez allí no comió ni bebió nada, pues estaba muy triste por el pecado de los israelitas que habían vuelto del cautiverio.

And Ezra arose from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib; and when he came thither, he ate no bread and drank no water; for he mourned because of the unfaithfulness of them that had been carried away.

7 A cto seguido, enviaron mensajeros a Judá y a Jerusalén para que todos los israelitas nacidos en Babilonia se reunieran en Jerusalén.

And they made proclamation in Judah and Jerusalem to all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;

8 L os que no llegaran en un plazo de tres días, conforme al pacto aceptado por los jefes y los ancianos, perderían sus posesiones y serían excluidos de la comunidad de los repatriados.

and that whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be confiscated, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away.

9 F ue así como todos los descendientes de Judá y de Benjamín se reunieron en Jerusalén en el plazo fijado. La reunión tuvo lugar el día veinte del mes noveno, en la plaza del templo de Dios. Todos temblaban de miedo por causa de la lluvia y por tener que afrontar este asunto.

Then were all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together at Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month; and all the people sat in the open space of the house of God, trembling because of the matter, and because of the pouring rain.

10 E ntonces el sacerdote Esdras se puso de pie y les dijo: «Ustedes han pecado al tomar por esposas a mujeres de otros pueblos. Con esto han añadido más pecados a los ya cometidos por el pueblo de Israel.

And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, Ye have acted unfaithfully, and have taken foreign wives, to increase the trespass of Israel.

11 L o que deben hacer ahora es dar gloria al Señor, Dios de nuestros padres, y comprometerse a cumplir su voluntad, y separarse de los pueblos que habitan estas tierras y de las mujeres extranjeras.»

And now make confession to Jehovah the God of your fathers, and do his pleasure, and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the foreign wives.

12 T odos los convocados respondieron en alta voz: «Haremos todo lo que nos has dicho.

And the whole congregation answered and said with a loud voice, Yes, it is for us to do according to thy words.

13 P ero somos muchos, está lloviendo, y no podemos quedarnos en la calle. Además, este asunto no va a resolverse en un día ni dos, pues somos muchos los que hemos incurrido en este pecado.

But the people are many, and it is a time of pouring rain, and it is not possible to stand without: neither is this a work for one day or two; for we are many that have transgressed in this thing.

14 Q ue se queden nuestros jefes, y que aquellos que vivan en nuestras ciudades y hayan tomado por esposas a mujeres extranjeras vengan a Jerusalén en tiempos determinados, junto con los ancianos y jueces de cada ciudad, hasta que apartemos de nosotros la ira de nuestro Dios.»

Let now our princes, while this matter is going on, stand for all the congregation, and let all those that have taken foreign wives in our cities come at the appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce anger of our God be turned from us.

15 S olamente Jonatán hijo de Asael y Jahazías hijo de Ticvá se opusieron, apoyados por los levitas Mesulán y Sabetay.

Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah stood up against this; and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.

16 A sí lo hicieron los que habían vuelto del cautiverio. Entonces eligieron al sacerdote Esdras y a ciertos jefes de las familias patriarcales, y todos los que habían sido nombrados se presentaron el primer día del mes décimo para dilucidar este asunto.

And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest certain of the chief fathers were separated according to their fathers' houses, and all of them by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.

17 E l juicio se prolongó hasta el primer día del mes primero, y comparecieron todos los que habían tomado por esposas a mujeres extranjeras.

And they ended with all the men that had taken foreign wives by the first day of the first month.

18 L a siguiente es una lista de los hijos de los sacerdotes que tomaron por esposas a mujeres extranjeras. De los hijos de Josué hijo de Josadac, y de sus hermanos: Maseías, Eliezer, Jarib y Gedalías.

And among the sons of the priests there were found that had taken foreign wives, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren: Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.

19 É stos juraron que despedirían a sus mujeres, y como ofrenda por su pecado ofrecieron un carnero de sus rebaños.

And they gave their hand to send away their wives; and they offered a ram of the flock, as trespass-offering for their guilt.

20 D e los hijos de Imer: Jananí y Zebadías.

And of the children of Immer: Hanani, and Zebadiah.

21 D e los hijos de Jarín: Maseías, Elías, Semaías, Yejiel y Uzías.

And of the children of Harim: Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.

22 D e los hijos de Pasjur: Elioguenay, Maseías, Ismael, Natanael, Jozabad y Elasa.

And of the children of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

23 D e los descendientes de los levitas: Jozabad, Simey, Kelaía (es decir, Kelita), Petajías, Judá y Eliezer.

And of the Levites: Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

24 D e los cantores: Eliasib. De los porteros: Salún, Telén y Uri.

And of the singers: Eliashib. And of the doorkeepers: Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.

25 O tros israelitas fueron: De los hijos de Paros: Ramía, Jezías, Malquías, Mijamín, Eleazar, Malquías y Benaías.

And of Israel; of the children of Parosh: Ramiah, and Jizzijah, and Malchijah, and Mijamin, and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.

26 D e los hijos de Elam: Matanías, Zacarías, Yejiel, Abdi, Jeremot y Elías.

And of the children of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Elijah.

27 D e los hijos de Zatu: Elioguenay, Eliasib, Matanías, Jeremot, Zabad y Aziza.

And of the children of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.

And of the children of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, Athlai.

And of the children of Pahath-Moab: Adna, and Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezaleel, and Binnui, and Manasseh.

Of the children of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, and Joel, Benaiah.

44 T odos estos habían tomado por esposas a mujeres extranjeras, y muchas de ellas habían tenido hijos.

All these had taken foreign wives; and there were among them wives who had had children.
