1 A name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

2 I t is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting: in that that is the end of all men, and the living taketh it to heart.

Mejor es ir a una casa de luto que ir a una casa de banquete, porque aquello es el fin de todo hombre, y al que vive lo hará reflexionar en su corazón.

3 V exation is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

Mejor es la tristeza que la risa, porque cuando el rostro está triste el corazón puede estar contento.

4 T he heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools in the house of mirth.

El corazón de los sabios está en la casa del luto, mientras que el corazón de los necios está en la casa del placer.

5 I t is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise, than to hear the song of fools.

Mejor es oír la reprensión del sabio que oír la canción de los necios.

6 F or as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity.

Porque como crepitar de espinos bajo la olla, así es la risa del necio. Y también esto es vanidad.

7 S urely oppression maketh a wise man mad, and a gift destroyeth the heart.

Ciertamente la opresión enloquece al sabio, y el soborno corrompe el corazón.

8 B etter is the end of a thing than its beginning; better is a patient spirit than a proud spirit.

Mejor es el fin de un asunto que su comienzo; mejor es la paciencia de espíritu que la altivez de espíritu.

9 B e not hasty in thy spirit to be vexed; for vexation resteth in the bosom of fools.

No te apresures en tu espíritu a enojarte, porque el enojo se anida en el seno de los necios.

10 S ay not, How is it that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.

No digas: ¿Por qué fueron los días pasados mejores que éstos? Pues no es sabio que preguntes sobre esto.

11 W isdom is as good as an inheritance, and profitable to them that see the sun.

Buena es la sabiduría con herencia, y provechosa para los que ven el sol.

12 F or wisdom is a defence money is a defence; but the excellency of knowledge is, wisdom maketh them that possess it to live.

Porque la sabiduría protege como el dinero protege; pero la ventaja del conocimiento es que la sabiduría preserva la vida de sus poseedores.

13 C onsider the work of God; for who can make straight what he hath made crooked?

Considera la obra de Dios: porque ¿quién puede enderezar lo que El ha torcido ?

14 I n the day of prosperity enjoy good, and in the day of adversity consider: God hath also set the one beside the other, to the end that man should find out nothing after him.

Alégrate en el día de la prosperidad, y en el día de la adversidad considera: Dios ha hecho tanto el uno como el otro para que el hombre no descubra nada que suceda después de él.

15 A ll have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a righteous that perisheth by his righteousness, and there is a wicked that prolongeth by his wickedness.

He visto todo durante mi vida de vanidad: hay justo que perece en su justicia, y hay impío que alarga su vida en su perversidad.

16 B e not righteous overmuch; neither make thyself overwise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

No seas demasiado justo, ni seas sabio en exceso. ¿Por qué has de destruirte?

17 B e not overmuch wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

No seas demasiado impío, ni seas necio. ¿Por qué has de morir antes de tu tiempo ?

18 I t is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from that withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God cometh forth from them all.

Bueno es que retengas esto sin soltar aquello de tu mano; porque el que teme a Dios se sale con todo ello.

19 W isdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty that are in a city.

La sabiduría hace más fuerte al sabio que diez gobernantes que haya en una ciudad.

20 S urely there is not a righteous man upon earth, that doeth good and sinneth not.

Ciertamente no hay hombre justo en la tierra que haga el bien y nunca peque.

21 A lso give not heed unto all words that are spoken, lest thou hear thy servant curse thee.

Tampoco tomes en serio todas las palabras que se hablan, no sea que oigas a tu siervo maldecirte.

22 F or also thine own heart knoweth that oftentimes thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

Porque tú también te das cuenta que muchas veces has maldecido a otros de la misma manera.

23 A ll this have I tried by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

Todo esto probé con sabiduría, y dije: Seré sabio; pero eso estaba lejos de mí.

24 W hatever hath been, is far off, and exceeding deep: who will find it out?

Está lejos lo que ha sido, y en extremo profundo. ¿Quién lo descubrirá ?

25 I turned, I and my heart, to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom and reason, and to know wickedness to be folly, and foolishness to be madness;

Dirigí mi corazón a conocer, a investigar y a buscar la sabiduría y la razón, y a reconocer la maldad de la insensatez y la necedad de la locura.

26 a nd I found more bitter than death the woman whose heart is nets and snares, whose hands are bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be caught by her.

Y hallé más amarga que la muerte a la mujer cuyo corazón es lazos y redes, cuyas manos son cadenas. El que agrada a Dios escapará de ella, pero el pecador será por ella apresado.

27 S ee this which I have found, saith the Preacher, one by one to find out the reason;

Mira —dice el Predicador— he descubierto esto, agregando una cosa a otra para hallar la razón,

28 w hich my soul yet seeketh, and I have not found: one man among a thousand have I found, but a woman among all those have I not found.

que mi alma está todavía buscando mas no ha hallado: He hallado a un hombre entre mil, pero mujer entre todas éstas no he hallado.

29 O nly see this which I have found: that God made man upright, but they have sought out many devices.

Mira, sólo esto he hallado: que Dios hizo rectos a los hombres, pero ellos se buscaron muchas artimañas.
