1 A nd Jacob dwelt in the land where his father sojourned—in the land of Canaan.

Y Jacob habitó en la tierra donde había peregrinado su padre, en la tierra de Canaán.

2 T hese are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, fed the flock with his brethren; and he was doing service with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought to his father an evil report of them.

Esta es la historia de las generaciones de Jacob: José, cuando tenía diecisiete años, apacentaba el rebaño con sus hermanos; el joven estaba con los hijos de Bilha y con los hijos de Zilpa, mujeres de su padre. Y José trajo a su padre malos informes sobre ellos.

3 A nd Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons, because he was son of his old age; and he made him a vest of many colours.

Y amaba Israel a José más que a todos sus hijos, porque era para él el hijo de su vejez; y le hizo una túnica de muchos colores.

4 A nd his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, and they hated him, and could not greet him with friendliness.

Y vieron sus hermanos que su padre lo amaba más que a todos sus hermanos; por eso lo odiaban y no podían hablarle amistosamente. Sueños de José

5 A nd Joseph dreamed a dream, and told to his brethren, and they hated him yet the more.

Y José tuvo un sueño y cuando lo contó a sus hermanos, ellos lo odiaron aún más.

6 A nd he said to them, Hear, I pray you, this dream, which I have dreamt:

Y él les dijo: Os ruego que escuchéis este sueño que he tenido.

7 B ehold, we were binding sheaves in the fields, and lo, my sheaf rose up, and remained standing; and behold, your sheaves came round about and bowed down to my sheaf.

He aquí, estábamos atando gavillas en medio del campo, y he aquí que mi gavilla se levantó y se puso derecha, y entonces vuestras gavillas se ponían alrededor y se inclinaban hacia mi gavilla.

8 A nd his brethren said to him, Wilt thou indeed be a king over us? wilt thou indeed rule over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams and for his words.

Y sus hermanos le dijeron: ¿Acaso reinarás sobre nosotros? ¿O acaso te enseñorearás sobre nosotros ? Y lo odiaron aún más por causa de sus sueños y de sus palabras.

9 A nd he dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamt another dream, and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.

Tuvo aún otro sueño, y lo contó a sus hermanos, diciendo: He aquí, he tenido aún otro sueño; y he aquí, el sol, la luna y once estrellas se inclinaban ante mí.

10 A nd he told to his father and to his brethren. And his father rebuked him, and said to him, What is this dream which thou hast dreamt? Shall we indeed come, I and thy mother and thy brethren, to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

Y él lo contó a su padre y a sus hermanos; y su padre lo reprendió, y le dijo: ¿Qué es este sueño que has tenido ? ¿Acaso yo, tu madre y tus hermanos vendremos a inclinarnos hasta el suelo ante ti ?

11 A nd his brethren envied him; but his father kept the saying.

Y sus hermanos le tenían envidia, pero su padre reflexionaba sobre lo dicho. José va en busca de sus hermanos

12 A nd his brethren went to feed their father's flock at Shechem.

Después sus hermanos fueron a apacentar el rebaño de su padre en Siquem.

13 A nd Israel said to Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed at Shechem? Come, that I may send thee to them. And he said to him, Here am I.

E Israel dijo a José: ¿No están tus hermanos apacentando el rebaño en Siquem ? Ven y te enviaré a ellos. Y él le dijo: Iré.

14 A nd he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see after the welfare of thy brethren, and after the welfare of the flock; and bring me word again. And he sent him out of the vale of Hebron; and he came towards Shechem.

Entonces Israel le dijo: Ve ahora y mira cómo están tus hermanos y cómo está el rebaño; y tráeme noticias de ellos. Lo envió, pues, desde el valle de Hebrón, y José fue a Siquem.

15 A nd a man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the country; and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?

Y estando él dando vueltas por el campo, un hombre lo encontró, y el hombre le preguntó, diciendo: ¿Qué buscas?

16 A nd he said, I am seeking my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed.

Y él respondió: Busco a mis hermanos; te ruego que me informes dónde están apacentando el rebaño.

17 A nd the man said, They have removed from this; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them at Dothan.

Y el hombre respondió: Se han ido de aquí, pues yo les oí decir: “Vamos a Dotán.” Entonces José fue tras sus hermanos y los encontró en Dotán. Complot de los hermanos de José

18 A nd when they saw him from afar, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to put him to death.

Cuando ellos lo vieron de lejos, y antes que se les acercara, tramaron contra él para matarlo.

19 A nd they said one to another, Behold, there comes that dreamer!

Y se dijeron unos a otros: Aquí viene el soñador.

20 A nd now come and let us kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, An evil beast has devoured him; and we will see what becomes of his dreams.

Ahora pues, venid, matémoslo y arrojémoslo a uno de los pozos; y diremos: “Una fiera lo devoró.” Entonces veremos en qué quedan sus sueños.

21 A nd Reuben heard, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, Let us not take his life.

Pero Rubén oyó esto y lo libró de sus manos, y dijo: No le quitemos la vida.

22 A nd Reuben said to them, Shed no blood: cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness; but lay no hand upon him—in order that he might deliver him out of their hand, to bring him to his father again.

Rubén les dijo además: No derraméis sangre. Echadlo en este pozo del desierto, pero no le pongáis la mano encima. Esto dijo para poder librarlo de las manos de ellos y volverlo a su padre.

23 A nd it came to pass when Joseph came to his brethren, that they stripped Joseph of his vest, the vest of many colours, which he had on;

Y sucedió que cuando José llegó a sus hermanos, despojaron a José de su túnica, la túnica de muchos colores que llevaba puesta;

24 a nd they took him and cast him into the pit; now the pit was empty—there was no water in it.

y lo tomaron y lo echaron en el pozo. Y el pozo estaba vacío, no había agua en él. José vendido como esclavo

25 A nd they sat down to eat bread; and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites came from Gilead; and their camels bore tragacanth, and balsam, and ladanum—going to carry down to Egypt.

Entonces se sentaron a comer, y cuando levantaron los ojos y miraron, he aquí, una caravana de ismaelitas venía de Galaad con sus camellos cargados de resina aromática, bálsamo y mirra, que iban bajando hacia Egipto.

26 A nd Judah said to his brethren, What profit is it that we kill our brother and secrete his blood?

Y Judá dijo a sus hermanos: ¿Qué ganaremos con matar a nuestro hermano y ocultar su sangre ?

27 C ome and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites; but let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh. And his brethren hearkened.

Venid, vendámoslo a los ismaelitas y no pongamos las manos sobre él, pues es nuestro hermano, carne nuestra. Y sus hermanos le hicieron caso.

28 A nd Midianitish men, merchants, passed by; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty silver-pieces; and they brought Joseph to Egypt.

Pasaron entonces unos mercaderes madianitas, y ellos sacaron a José, subiéndolo del pozo, y vendieron a José a los ismaelitas por veinte piezas de plata. Y éstos llevaron a José a Egipto. Jacob llora a José

29 A nd Reuben returned to the pit, and behold, Joseph not in the pit; and he rent his garments,

Cuando Rubén volvió al pozo, he aquí, José no estaba en el pozo; entonces rasgó sus vestidos.

30 a nd returned to his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, where shall I go?

Y volvió a sus hermanos y les dijo: El muchacho no está allí; y yo, ¿adónde iré ?

31 A nd they took Joseph's vest, and slaughtered a buck of the goats, and dipped the vest in the blood;

Entonces tomaron la túnica de José y mataron un macho cabrío, y empaparon la túnica en la sangre;

32 a nd they sent the vest of many colours and had it carried to their father, and said, This have we found: discern now whether it is thy son's vest or not.

y enviaron la túnica de muchos colores y la llevaron a su padre, y dijeron: Encontramos esto; te rogamos que lo examines para ver si es la túnica de tu hijo o no.

33 A nd he discerned it, and said, my son's vest! an evil beast has devoured him: Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces!

El la examinó, y dijo: Es la túnica de mi hijo. Una fiera lo ha devorado; sin duda José ha sido despedazado.

34 A nd Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

Y Jacob rasgó sus vestidos, puso cilicio sobre sus lomos y estuvo de duelo por su hijo muchos días.

35 A nd all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted, and said, For I will go down to my son into Sheol mourning. Thus his father wept for him.

Y todos sus hijos y todas sus hijas vinieron para consolarlo, pero él rehusó ser consolado, y dijo: Ciertamente enlutado bajaré al Seol por causa de mi hijo. Y su padre lloró por él.

36 A nd the Midianites sold him into Egypt, to Potiphar, a chamberlain of Pharaoh, the captain of the life-guard.

Mientras tanto, los madianitas lo vendieron en Egipto a Potifar, oficial de Faraón, capitán de la guardia.
