1 A nd the whole earth had one language, and the same words.

Tutta la terra parlava la stessa lingua e usava le stesse parole.

2 A nd it came to pass as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and dwelt there.

Dirigendosi verso l’Oriente, gli uomini capitarono in una pianura nel paese di Scinear, e là si stanziarono.

3 A nd they said one to another, Come on, let us make bricks, and burn thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar.

Si dissero l’un l’altro: «Venite, facciamo dei mattoni cotti con il fuoco!» Essi adoperarono mattoni anziché pietre, e bitume invece di calce.

4 A nd they said, Come on, let us build ourselves a city and a tower, the top of which to the heavens; and let us make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth.

Poi dissero: «Venite, costruiamoci una città e una torre la cui cima giunga fino al cielo; acquistiamoci fama, affinché non siamo dispersi sulla faccia di tutta la terra».

5 A nd Jehovah came down to see the city and the tower which the children of men built.

Il Signore discese per vedere la città e la torre che i figli degli uomini costruivano.

6 A nd Jehovah said, Behold, the people is one, and have all one language; and this have they begun to do. And now will they be hindered in nothing that they meditate doing.

Il Signore disse: «Ecco, essi sono un solo popolo e hanno tutti una lingua sola; questo è il principio del loro lavoro; ora nulla impedirà loro di condurre a termine ciò che intendono fare.

7 C ome, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.

Scendiamo dunque e confondiamo il loro linguaggio, perché l’uno non capisca la lingua dell’altro!»

8 A nd Jehovah scattered them thence over the face of the whole earth. And they left off building the city.

Così il Signore li disperse di là su tutta la faccia della terra ed essi cessarono di costruire la città.

9 T herefore was its name called Babel; because Jehovah there confounded the language of the whole earth. And Jehovah scattered them thence over the face of the whole earth.

10 T hese are the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood.

Questa è la discendenza di Sem. Sem, all’età di cento anni, generò Arpacsad, due anni dopo il diluvio.

11 A nd Shem lived after he had begotten Arphaxad five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

Sem, dopo aver generato Arpacsad, visse cinquecento anni e generò figli e figlie.

12 A nd Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and begot Shelah.

Arpacsad visse trentacinque anni e generò Sela;

13 A nd Arphaxad lived after he had begotten Shelah four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.

Arpacsad, dopo aver generato Sela, visse quattrocentotré anni e generò figli e figlie.

14 A nd Shelah lived thirty years, and begot Eber.

Sela visse trent’anni e generò Eber;

15 A nd Shelah lived after he had begotten Eber four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.

Sela, dopo aver generato Eber, visse quattrocentotré anni e generò figli e figlie.

16 A nd Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot Peleg.

Eber visse trentaquattro anni e generò Peleg;

17 A nd Eber lived after he had begotten Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.

Eber, dopo aver generato Peleg, visse quattrocentotrent’anni e generò figli e figlie.

18 A nd Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu.

Peleg visse trent’anni e generò Reu;

19 A nd Peleg lived after he had begotten Reu two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.

Peleg, dopo aver generato Reu, visse duecentonove anni e generò figli e figlie.

20 A nd Reu lived thirty-two years, and begot Serug.

Reu visse trentadue anni e generò Serug;

21 A nd Reu lived after he had begotten Serug two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.

Reu, dopo aver generato Serug, visse duecentosette anni e generò figli e figlie.

22 A nd Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor.

Serug visse trent’anni e generò Naor;

23 A nd Serug lived after he had begotten Nahor two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

Serug, dopo aver generato Naor, visse duecento anni e generò figli e figlie.

24 A nd Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot Terah.

Naor visse ventinove anni e generò Tera;

25 A nd Nahor lived after he had begotten Terah a hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.

Naor, dopo aver generato Tera, visse centodiciannove anni e generò figli e figlie.

26 A nd Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

Tera visse settant’anni e generò Abramo, Naor e Aran.

27 A nd these are the generations of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot.

Questa è la discendenza di Tera. Tera generò Abramo, Naor e Aran; Aran generò Lot.

28 A nd Haran died before the face of his father Terah in the land of his nativity at Ur of the Chaldeans.

Aran morì in presenza di Tera, suo padre, nel suo paese natale in Ur dei Caldei.

29 A nd Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, a daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah.

Abramo e Naor si presero delle mogli; il nome della moglie di Abramo era Sarai; e il nome della moglie di Naor, Milca, che era figlia di Aran, padre di Milca e padre di Isca.

30 A nd Sarai was barren: she had no child.

Sarai era sterile; non aveva figli.

31 A nd Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth together out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan, and came as far as Haran, and dwelt there.

Tera prese Abramo, suo figlio, e Lot, figlio di Aran, cioè figlio di suo figlio, e Sarai sua nuora, moglie di Abramo suo figlio, e uscì con loro da Ur dei Caldei per andare nel paese di Canaan. Essi giunsero fino a Caran, e là soggiornarono.

32 A nd the days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.

Il tempo che Tera visse fu duecentocinque anni; poi Tera morì in Caran.
