1 N ow it came to pass one day that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man that bore his armour, Come and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison which is on the other side. But he did not tell his father.

Un giorno Gionatan, figlio di Saul, disse al suo giovane scudiero: «Vieni, andiamo verso la guarnigione dei Filistei che è là dall’altra parte». Però a suo padre non disse nulla.

2 A nd Saul abode at the extreme end of Gibeah under the pomegranate-tree which in Migron; and the people that were with him were about six hundred men.

Saul stava allora all’estremità di Ghibea, sotto il melograno di Migron, e la gente che aveva con sé ammontava a circa seicento uomini;

3 ( And Ahijah the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, Jehovah's priest in Shiloh, wore the ephod.) And the people did not know that Jonathan was gone.

e Aia, figlio di Aitub, fratello d’Icabod, figlio di Fineas, figlio di Eli, sacerdote del Signore a Silo, portava l’efod. Il popolo non sapeva che Gionatan se ne fosse andato.

4 N ow between the passes by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines' garrison there was a sharp rock on the one side and a sharp rock on the other side; and the name of the one Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.

Fra i passi attraverso i quali Gionatan cercava di arrivare alla guarnigione dei Filistei, c’era una punta rocciosa da una parte e una punta rocciosa dall’altra parte: una si chiamava Boses e l’altra Sené.

5 T he one crag a pillar on the north opposite to Michmash, and the other on the south opposite to Geba.

Una di queste punte sorgeva a nord, di fronte a Micmas, e l’altra a mezzogiorno, di fronte a Gheba.

6 A nd Jonathan said to the young man that bore his armour, Come, and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised: perhaps Jehovah will work for us; for there is no restraint to Jehovah to save by many or by few.

Gionatan disse al suo giovane scudiero: «Vieni, andiamo verso la guarnigione di questi incirconcisi; forse il Signore agirà in nostro favore, poiché nulla può impedire al Signore di salvare con molta o con poca gente».

7 A nd his armour-bearer said to him, Do all that is in thy heart; turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.

Il suo scudiero gli rispose: «Fa’ tutto quello che ti sta nel cuore; va’ pure; ecco, io sono con te dove il cuore ti conduce».

8 T hen said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over to the men, and we will shew ourselves to them.

Allora Gionatan disse: «Ecco, noi andremo verso quella gente e ci faremo vedere da loro.

9 I f they say thus to us, Stand still until we come to you, then we will stay in our place, and will not go up to them.

Se ci dicono: “Fermatevi, finché veniamo da voi!”, ci fermeremo al nostro posto e non saliremo fino a loro;

10 A nd if they say thus, Come up to us, then we will go up; for Jehovah has given them into our hand; and this shall be the sign to us.

ma se ci dicono: “Venite su da noi!”, saliremo, perché il Signore ha deciso di darli nelle nostre mani. Questo ci servirà di segno».

11 A nd both of them shewed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines; and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.

Così si fecero vedere tutti e due dalla guarnigione dei Filistei. E i Filistei dissero: «Ecco gli Ebrei che escono dalle grotte dove si erano nascosti!»

12 A nd the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armour-bearer and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you something. And Jonathan said to his armour-bearer, Come up after me; for Jehovah has delivered them into the hand of Israel.

Gli uomini della guarnigione, rivolgendosi a Gionatan e al suo scudiero, dissero: «Venite su da noi, ché abbiamo qualcosa da dirvi». Gionatan disse al suo scudiero: «Sali dietro a me, poiché il Signore li dà nelle mani d’Israele».

13 A nd Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armour-bearer after him; and they fell before Jonathan; and his armour-bearer slew after him.

Gionatan salì, arrampicandosi con le mani e con i piedi, seguito dal suo scudiero. E i Filistei caddero davanti a Gionatan; e lo scudiero, dietro a lui, li finiva.

14 A nd that first slaughter which Jonathan and his armour-bearer wrought was about twenty men, as it were on the half-furrow of an acre of land.

In questa prima disfatta inflitta da Gionatan e dal suo scudiero, caddero circa venti uomini, sullo spazio di circa la metà di un iugero di terra.

15 A nd there was trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people; the garrison, and the ravagers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked; for it was a trembling God.

Lo spavento si sparse allora nell’accampamento, nella campagna e fra tutto il popolo; la guarnigione e i guastatori furono anch’essi spaventati; la terra tremò; fu uno spavento terribile.

16 A nd the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on slaying one another.

Le sentinelle di Saul a Ghibea di Beniamino guardarono e videro che la moltitudine si sbandava e fuggiva qua e là.

17 T hen said Saul to the people that were with him, Muster now, and see who is gone from us. And they mustered, and behold, Jonathan and his armour-bearer were not there.

Allora Saul disse alla gente ch’era con lui: «Fate l’appello e vedete chi se n’è andato da noi». E, fatto l’appello, mancavano Gionatan e il suo scudiero.

18 A nd Saul said to Ahijah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.

Saul disse ad Aia: «Fa’ accostare l’arca di Dio!» – Infatti l’arca di Dio era allora con i figli d’Israele. –

19 A nd it came to pass while Saul talked to the priest, that the noise which was in the camp of the Philistines went on and increased; and Saul said to the priest, Withdraw thy hand.

Mentre Saul parlava con il sacerdote, il tumulto andava aumentando nell’accampamento dei Filistei e Saul disse al sacerdote: «Ritira la mano! »

20 A nd Saul and all the people that were with him were called together, and they came to the battle; and behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, a very great confusion.

Poi Saul e tutto il popolo che era con lui si radunarono e avanzarono fino al luogo della battaglia; ed ecco che in mezzo ai Filistei la spada dell’uno era rivolta contro l’altro e la confusione era grandissima.

21 A nd there were Hebrews with the Philistines before that time, who had gone up with them into the camp round about; and they also to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.

Or gli Ebrei, quelli che già prima si trovavano con i Filistei ed erano saliti con essi all’accampamento dal paese circostante, fecero voltafaccia e si unirono anch’essi agli Israeliti che erano con Saul e Gionatan.

22 A nd all the men of Israel who had hid themselves in mount Ephraim heard that the Philistines fled, and they also followed hard after them in the battle.

Anche tutti gli Israeliti che si erano nascosti nella regione montuosa di Efraim, quando udirono che i Filistei fuggivano, si misero a inseguirli da vicino per combatterli.

23 A nd Jehovah saved Israel that day; and the battle passed over beyond Beth-Aven.

In quel giorno il Signore salvò Israele e la battaglia si estese fin oltre Bet-Aven. Gionatan scampa alle conseguenze di un giuramento irresponsabile di Saul

24 B ut the men of Israel were distressed that day. Now Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth food until evening, and I am avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted food.

Gli uomini d’Israele in quel giorno erano sfiniti; ma Saul fece fare al popolo questo giuramento: «Maledetto l’uomo che toccherà cibo prima di sera, prima che io mi sia vendicato dei miei nemici». Così nessuno del popolo toccò cibo.

25 A nd all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey on the ground.

Poi tutto il popolo giunse a una foresta, dove c’era del miele per terra.

26 A nd the people had come into the wood, and behold, the honey flowed; but no man put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath.

Quando il popolo entrò nella foresta, vide il miele che colava, ma nessuno si portò la mano alla bocca, perché il popolo rispettava il giuramento.

27 B ut Jonathan had not heard when his father adjured the people; and he put forth the end of his staff which was in his hand, and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes became bright.

Ma Gionatan non aveva sentito quando suo padre aveva fatto giurare il popolo; egli stese la punta del bastone che teneva in mano, la intinse nel miele che colava, portò la mano alla bocca, e gli si rischiarò la vista.

28 T hen answered one of the people and said, Thy father strictly adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth food this day; and the people are faint.

Uno del popolo, rivolgendosi a lui, gli disse: «Tuo padre ha espressamente fatto fare al popolo questo giuramento: “Maledetto l’uomo che oggi toccherà cibo, sebbene il popolo sia estenuato”».

29 A nd Jonathan said, My father has troubled the land: see, I pray you, that mine eyes are bright, because I tasted a little of this honey.

Allora Gionatan disse: «Mio padre ha recato un danno al popolo; vedete come l’aver gustato un po’ di questo miele mi ha rischiarato la vista!

30 H ow much more, if the people had eaten freely to-day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for would there not now have been a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?

Ah, se oggi il popolo avesse mangiato a volontà del bottino che ha trovato presso i nemici! Non si sarebbe forse fatto una più grande strage di Filistei?»

31 A nd they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Ajalon; and the people were very faint.

Essi dunque sconfissero quel giorno i Filistei da Micmas ad Aialon; e il popolo era estenuato e si gettò sul bottino;

32 A nd the people fell on the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slaughtered them on the ground; and the people ate with the blood.

prese pecore, buoi e vitelli, li scannò sul suolo e li mangiò con il sangue.

33 A nd they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against Jehovah, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have acted perversely: roll me now a great stone.

Questo fu riferito a Saul e gli fu detto: «Ecco, il popolo pecca contro il Signore mangiando carne con il sangue». Egli disse: «Voi avete commesso un’infedeltà; rotolate subito qua presso di me una grande pietra».

34 A nd Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say to them, Bring near to me every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slaughter them here, and eat; and sin not against Jehovah in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slaughtered there.

Saul soggiunse: «Andate in mezzo al popolo e dite a ognuno di condurmi qua il suo bue e la sua pecora e di scannarli qui; poi mangiate, e non peccate contro il Signore mangiando carne con sangue!» Quella notte ognuno del popolo condusse di propria mano il suo bue e lo scannò sulla pietra.

35 A nd Saul built an altar to Jehovah: this was the first altar he built to Jehovah.

Saul costruì un altare al Signore; questo fu il primo altare che egli costruì al Signore.

36 A nd Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and plunder them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever is good in thy sight. Then said the priest, Let us come near hither to God.

Poi Saul disse: «Scendiamo a inseguire i Filistei nella notte; saccheggiamoli fino alla mattina e facciamo in modo che non ne scampi nemmeno uno». Il popolo rispose: «Fa’ tutto quello che ti pare bene». Ma il sacerdote disse: «Avviciniamoci qui a Dio».

37 A nd Saul inquired of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou give them into the hand of Israel? But he did not answer him that day.

Saul consultò Dio e disse: «Devo scendere a inseguire i Filistei? Li darai tu nelle mani d’Israele?» Ma questa volta Dio non gli diede nessuna risposta.

38 A nd Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the heads of the people; and know and see wherein this sin has been this day.

Saul disse: «Accostatevi, voi tutti capi del popolo, esaminate e vedete in che consista il peccato commesso questo giorno.

39 F or, Jehovah liveth, who has saved Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall certainly die. And no one answered him among all the people.

Infatti, com’è vero che il Signore, il salvatore d’Israele, vive, anche se il colpevole fosse mio figlio Gionatan, egli dovrà morire». Ma in tutto il popolo nessuno gli rispose.

40 T hen said he to all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said to Saul, Do what is good in thy sight.

Allora egli disse a tutto Israele: «Mettetevi da un lato e io e mio figlio Gionatan staremo dall’altro». Il popolo disse a Saul: «Fa’ quello che ti pare bene».

41 A nd Saul said to Jehovah the God of Israel, Give a perfect! And Jonathan and Saul were taken, and the people escaped.

Saul disse al Signore: «Dio d’Israele, fa’ conoscere la verità!» Gionatan e Saul furono designati dalla sorte, e il popolo ne uscì salvo.

42 A nd Saul said, Cast between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.

Poi Saul disse: «Tirate a sorte fra me e Gionatan mio figlio». E Gionatan fu designato.

43 A nd Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him and said, With the end of the staff which is in my hand I tasted a little honey, behold, I must die!

Allora Saul disse a Gionatan: «Dimmi quello che hai fatto». Gionatan glielo confessò e disse: «Sì, io assaggiai un po’ di miele con la punta del bastone che avevo in mano; eccomi qui: morirò!»

44 A nd Saul said, God do so and more also; thou shalt certainly die, Jonathan.

Saul disse: «Mi tratti Dio con tutto il suo rigore, se non morirai, Gionatan!»

45 A nd the people said to Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who has wrought this great salvation in Israel? Far be it! Jehovah liveth, there shall not a hair of his head fall to the ground; for he has wrought with God this day. So the people delivered Jonathan, that he died not.

Ma il popolo disse a Saul: «Gionatan, che ha compiuto questa grande liberazione in Israele, dovrebbe forse morire? Non sarà mai! Com’è vero che il Signore vive, non cadrà in terra un capello del suo capo; poiché oggi egli ha operato con Dio!» Così il popolo salvò Gionatan, che non fu messo a morte.

46 A nd Saul went up from following the Philistines; and the Philistines went to their own place.

Poi Saul smise d’inseguire i Filistei, e i Filistei se ne tornarono al loro paese. Le guerre di Saul

47 A nd Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies round about, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines; and whithersoever he turned himself, he discomfited.

Quando Saul ebbe preso possesso del suo regno in Israele, mosse guerra a tutti i suoi nemici circostanti: a Moab, agli Ammoniti, a Edom, ai re di Soba e ai Filistei; e dovunque si volgeva, vinceva.

48 A nd he did valiantly, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of their spoilers.

Mostrò il suo valore sconfiggendo gli Amalechiti e liberando Israele dalle mani degli oppressori.

49 A nd the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Jishvi, and Malchi-shua. And the names of his two daughters: the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal.

I figli di Saul erano: Gionatan, Isvi e Malchisua; e delle sue due figlie, la maggiore si chiamava Merab e la minore Mical.

50 A nd the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz; and the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul's uncle.

Il nome della moglie di Saul era Ainoam, figlia di Aimaaz, e il nome del capitano del suo esercito era Abner, figlio di Ner, zio di Saul.

51 A nd Kish the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner were sons of Abiel.

Chis, padre di Saul, e Ner, padre di Abner, erano figli di Abiel.

52 A nd there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul; and when Saul saw any mighty man, or any valiant man, he took him to himself.

Per tutto il tempo di Saul vi fu guerra accanita contro i Filistei; perciò appena Saul notava un uomo forte e valoroso, lo prendeva con sé.
