1 A nd David spoke to Jehovah the words of this song in the day that Jehovah had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul.

Davide rivolse al Signore le parole di questo canto quando il Signore lo liberò dalla mano di tutti i suoi nemici e dalla mano di Saul. Egli disse:

2 A nd he said, Jehovah is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

«Il Signore è la mia rocca, la mia fortezza, il mio liberatore;

3 G od is my rock, in him will I trust—My shield, and the horn of my salvation, My high tower, and my refuge, My saviour: thou wilt save me from violence.

il mio Dio, la mia rupe in cui mi rifugio, il mio scudo, il mio potente salvatore, il mio alto rifugio, il mio asilo. O mio salvatore, tu mi salvi dalla violenza!

4 I will call upon Jehovah, who is to be praised; So shall I be saved from mine enemies.

Io invocai il Signore, che è degno di ogni lode, e fui salvato dai miei nemici.

5 F or the waves of death encompassed me, Torrents of Belial made me afraid.

Le onde della morte mi avevano circondato e i torrenti della distruzione mi avevano spaventato.

6 T he bands of Sheol surrounded me; The cords of death encountered me;

I legami del soggiorno dei morti mi avevano attorniato, i lacci della morte mi avevano sorpreso.

7 I n my distress I called upon Jehovah, And I cried to my God; And he heard my voice out of his temple, And my cry into his ears.

Nella mia angoscia invocai il Signore, gridai al mio Dio. Egli udì la mia voce dal suo tempio. Il mio grido giunse ai suoi orecchi.

8 T hen the earth shook, and quaked; The foundations of the heavens trembled And shook because he was wroth.

Allora la terra fu scossa e tremò, le fondamenta dei cieli furono smosse e scrollate, perché egli era colmo di sdegno.

9 T here went up a smoke out of his nostrils, And fire out of his mouth devoured: Coals burned forth from it.

Un fumo saliva dalle sue narici; un fuoco consumante gli usciva dalla bocca, e ne venivano fuori carboni accesi.

10 A nd he bowed the heavens, and came down; And darkness was under his feet.

Egli abbassò i cieli e discese, avendo sotto i piedi una densa caligine.

11 A nd he rode upon a cherub, and did fly; And he was seen upon the wings of the wind.

Cavalcava un cherubino e volava; appariva sulle ali del vento.

12 A nd he made darkness round about him a tent, Gatherings of waters, thick clouds of the skies.

Delle tenebre s’era fatto una tenda, s’era circondato di masse d’acqua e di dense nubi.

13 F rom the brightness before him Burned forth coals of fire.

Dallo splendore che lo precedeva si sprigionavano carboni accesi.

14 J ehovah thundered from the heavens, And the Most High uttered his voice.

Il Signore tonò dai cieli. L’Altissimo fece udire la sua voce.

15 A nd he sent arrows, and scattered; Lightning, and discomfited them.

Scagliò frecce e disperse i nemici; lanciò folgori e li mise in rotta.

16 A nd the beds of the sea were seen, The foundations of the world were uncovered At the rebuke of Jehovah, At the blast of the breath of his nostrils.

Allora apparve il fondo del mare, e le fondamenta del mondo furono scoperte dal rimprovero del Signore, al soffio del vento delle sue narici.

17 H e reached forth from above, he took me, He drew me out of great waters;

Egli tese dall’alto la mano e mi prese, mi trasse fuori dalle grandi acque.

18 H e delivered me from my strong enemy, From them that hated me; For they were mightier than I.

Mi liberò dal mio potente nemico e da quelli che mi odiavano, perché erano più forti di me.

19 T hey encountered me in the day of my calamity; But Jehovah was my stay.

Essi mi erano piombati addosso nel giorno della mia calamità, ma il Signore fu il mio sostegno.

20 A nd he brought me forth into a large place; He delivered me, because he delighted in me.

Egli mi trasse fuori al largo, mi liberò, perché mi gradisce.

21 J ehovah hath rewarded me according to my righteousness, According to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.

Il Signore mi ha ricompensato secondo la mia giustizia, mi ha reso secondo la purezza delle mie mani,

22 F or I have kept the ways of Jehovah, And have not wickedly departed from my God.

perché ho osservato le vie del Signore e non mi sono empiamente sviato dal mio Dio.

23 F or all his ordinances were before me, And his statutes, I did not depart from them,

Infatti ho tenuto tutte le sue leggi davanti a me e non mi sono allontanato dai suoi precetti.

24 A nd I was upright before him, And kept myself from mine iniquity.

Sono stato integro verso di lui e mi sono guardato dalla mia iniquità.

25 A nd Jehovah hath recompensed me according to my righteousness, According to my cleanness in his sight.

Perciò il Signore mi ha ripagato secondo la mia giustizia, secondo la mia purezza davanti a lui.

26 W ith the gracious thou dost shew thyself gracious; With the upright man thou dost shew thyself upright;

Tu ti mostri leale verso chi è leale, integro verso l’uomo integro;

27 W ith the pure thou dost shew thyself pure; And with the perverse thou dost shew thyself contrary.

ti mostri puro con il puro e ti mostri astuto con il perverso;

28 A nd the afflicted people thou dost save; And thine eyes are upon the haughty, thou bringest down.

tu salvi la gente afflitta, ma il tuo sguardo si ferma sugli alteri, per abbassarli.

29 F or thou art my lamp, Jehovah; And Jehovah enlighteneth my darkness.

Sì, tu sei la mia lampada, o Signore, e il Signore illumina le mie tenebre.

30 F or by thee I have run through a troop; By my God have I leaped over a wall.

Con te io assalgo i bastioni, con il mio Dio salgo sulle mura.

31 A s for God, his way is perfect; The word of Jehovah is tried: He is a shield to all that trust in him.

La via di Dio è perfetta, la parola del Signore è purificata con il fuoco. Egli è lo scudo di quelli che si rifugiano in lui.

32 F or who is God, save Jehovah? And who is a rock, save our God?

Infatti chi è Dio all’infuori del Signore ? Chi è rocca all’infuori del nostro Dio?

33 G od is my strong fortress, And he maketh my way perfectly smooth.

Dio è la mia potente fortezza e rende la mia via diritta.

34 H e maketh my feet like hinds', And setteth me upon my high places.

Egli rende i miei piedi simili a quelli delle cerve e mi rende saldo sulle mie montagne.

35 H e teacheth my hands to war, And mine arms bend a bow of brass.

Egli addestra le mie mani alla battaglia e le mie braccia tendono un arco di bronzo.

36 A nd thou didst give me the shield of thy salvation, And thy condescending gentleness hath made me great.

Tu mi hai anche dato lo scudo della tua salvezza e la tua bontà mi ha reso grande.

37 T hou enlargedst my steps under me; And mine ankles did not slip.

Tu hai allargato la via ai miei passi e i miei piedi non hanno vacillato.

38 I pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them, And I turned not again till they were consumed.

Io ho inseguito i miei nemici e li ho distrutti. Non sono tornato indietro prima di averli sterminati.

39 A nd I have consumed them and have crushed them, and they rose not again; Yea, they fell under my feet.

Li ho annientati, schiacciati; non sono risorti; sono caduti sotto i miei piedi.

40 A nd thou girdedst me with strength to battle: Thou didst subdue under me those that rose up against me.

Tu mi hai cinto di forza per la guerra, tu hai fatto piegare sotto di me i miei avversari;

41 A nd mine enemies didst thou make to turn their backs unto me, And those that hated me I destroyed.

hai fatto voltare le spalle davanti a me ai miei nemici; ho distrutto quelli che mi odiavano.

42 T hey looked, and there was none to save—Unto Jehovah, and he answered them not.

Hanno gridato aiuto, ma nessuno li ha salvati; hanno gridato al Signore, ma egli non ha risposto.

43 A nd I did beat them small as the dust of the earth, I trod them as the mire of the streets; I stamped upon them.

Io li ho tritati come polvere della terra, li ho pestati, calpestati, come il fango delle strade.

44 A nd thou hast delivered me from the strivings of my people, Thou hast kept me to be head of the nations: A people I knew not doth serve me:

Tu mi hai liberato dal mio popolo in rivolta, mi hai conservato capo di nazioni; un popolo che non conoscevo mi è stato sottomesso.

45 S trangers come cringing unto me: At the hearing of the ear, they obey me.

I figli degli stranieri mi hanno reso omaggio, al solo udir parlare di me, mi hanno ubbidito.

46 S trangers have faded away, And they come trembling forth from their close places.

I figli degli stranieri si son persi d’animo, sono usciti tremanti dai loro nascondigli.

47 J ehovah liveth; and blessed be my rock; And exalted be the God, the rock of my salvation,

Viva il Signore! Sia benedetta la mia Rocca! Sia esaltato Dio, la rocca della mia salvezza,

48 T he God who hath avenged me, And hath brought the peoples under me.

il Dio che fa la mia vendetta e mi sottomette i popoli,

49 H e brought me forth from mine enemies: Yea, thou hast lifted me up above them that rose up against me; From the man of violence hast thou delivered me.

che mi libera dai miei nemici. Sì, tu m’innalzi sopra i miei avversari, mi salvi dall’uomo violento.

50 T herefore will I give thanks to thee, Jehovah, among the nations, And will sing psalms to thy name.

Perciò, o Signore, ti loderò tra le nazioni e salmeggerò al tuo nome.

51 w ho giveth great deliverances to his king, And sheweth loving-kindness to his anointed, To David, and to his seed for evermore.

Grandi liberazioni egli accorda al suo re e usa bontà verso il suo unto, verso Davide e la sua discendenza per sempre».
