1 I said in my heart, Come now, I will try thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure. But behold, this also is vanity.

Io ho detto in cuor mio: «Andiamo! Ti voglio mettere alla prova con la gioia, e tu godrai il piacere!» Ed ecco che anche questo è vanità.

2 I said of laughter, Madness! and of mirth, What availeth it?

Io ho detto del riso: «È una follia», e della gioia: «A che giova?»

3 I searched in my heart how to cherish my flesh with wine, while practising my heart with wisdom; and how to lay hold on folly, till I should see what was that good for the children of men which they should do under the heavens all the days of their life.

Io presi in cuor mio la decisione di abbandonare la mia carne alle attrattive del vino e, pur lasciando che il mio cuore mi guidasse saggiamente, di attenermi alla follia, per vedere ciò che è bene che gli uomini facciano sotto il cielo, durante il numero dei giorni della loro vita.

4 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards;

Io intrapresi grandi lavori: mi costruii case, mi piantai vigne,

5 I made me gardens and parks, and I planted trees in them of every kind of fruit;

mi feci giardini e parchi, e vi piantai alberi fruttiferi di ogni specie;

6 I made me ponds of water, to water therewith the wood, where the trees are reared.

mi costruii stagni per irrigare con essi il bosco dove crescevano gli alberi.

7 I acquired servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of herds and flocks, above all that had been in Jerusalem before me.

Comprai servi e serve ed ebbi dei servi nati in casa; ebbi pure greggi e armenti in gran numero, più di tutti quelli che erano stati prima di me a Gerusalemme.

8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces; I got me men-singers and women-singers, and the delights of the children of men, a wife and concubines.

Accumulai argento, oro e le ricchezze dei re e delle province; mi procurai dei cantanti e delle cantanti e ciò che fa la delizia dei figli degli uomini, cioè donne in gran numero.

9 A nd I became great, and increased more than all that had been before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.

Così divenni grande e superai tutti quelli che erano stati prima di me a Gerusalemme; la mia saggezza rimase essa pure sempre con me.

10 A nd whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them: I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour, and this was my portion from all my labour.

Di tutto quello che i miei occhi desideravano io nulla rifiutai loro; non privai il cuore di nessuna gioia, poiché il mio cuore si rallegrava di ogni mia fatica, ed è la ricompensa che mi è toccata di ogni mia fatica.

11 T hen I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that it had cost me to do; and behold, all was vanity and pursuit of the wind, and there was no profit under the sun.

Poi considerai tutte le opere che le mie mani avevano fatte, e la fatica che avevo sostenuto per farle, ed ecco che tutto era vanità, un correre dietro al vento, e che non se ne trae alcun profitto sotto il sole. La stessa sorte per tutti

12 A nd I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly; for what shall the man that cometh after the king?—that which hath already been done.

Allora mi misi a esaminare la saggezza, la follia e la stoltezza. – Che farà l’uomo che succederà al re? Quello che già è stato fatto. –

13 A nd I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as light excelleth darkness.

E vidi che la saggezza ha un vantaggio sulla stoltezza, come la luce ha un vantaggio sulle tenebre.

14 T he wise man's eyes are in his head, and the fool walketh in darkness; but I myself also perceived that one event happeneth to them all.

Il saggio ha gli occhi in testa, mentre lo stolto cammina nelle tenebre; ma ho riconosciuto pure che tutti e due hanno la medesima sorte.

15 A nd I said in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool so will it happen even to me; and why was I then so wise? Then I said in my heart that this also is vanity.

Perciò ho detto in cuor mio: «La sorte che tocca allo stolto toccherà anche a me; perché dunque essere stato così saggio?» E ho detto in cuor mio che anche questo è vanità.

16 F or there shall be no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; because everything is already forgotten in the days which come. And how dieth the wise even as the fool?

Infatti, tanto del saggio quanto dello stolto non rimane ricordo eterno; poiché nei giorni futuri tutto sarà da tempo dimenticato. Purtroppo il saggio muore, al pari dello stolto!

17 A nd I hated life; for the work that is wrought under the sun was grievous unto me; for all is vanity and pursuit of the wind.

Perciò ho odiato la vita, perché tutto quello che si fa sotto il sole mi è divenuto odioso, poiché tutto è vanità, un correre dietro al vento.

18 A nd I hated all my labour wherewith I had been toiling under the sun, because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.

Ho anche odiato ogni fatica che ho sostenuta sotto il sole, e di cui debbo lasciare il godimento a colui che verrà dopo di me.

19 A nd who knoweth whether he will be a wise or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour at which I have laboured, and wherein I have been wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

Chi sa se egli sarà saggio o stolto? Eppure sarà padrone di tutto il lavoro che io ho compiuto con fatica e con saggezza sotto il sole. Anche questo è vanità.

20 T hen I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour wherewith I had laboured under the sun.

Così sono arrivato a far perdere al mio cuore ogni speranza su tutta la fatica che ho sostenuta sotto il sole.

21 F or there is a man whose labour hath been with wisdom, and with knowledge, and with skill, and who leaveth it to a man that hath not laboured therein, to be his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.

Infatti, ecco un uomo che ha lavorato con saggezza, con intelligenza e con successo, e lascia il frutto del suo lavoro in eredità a un altro, che non vi ha speso nessuna fatica! Anche questo è vanità, è un male grande.

22 F or what will man have of all his labour and of the striving of his heart, wherewith he hath wearied himself under the sun?

Allora che profitto trae l’uomo da tutto il suo lavoro, dalle preoccupazioni del suo cuore, da tutto ciò che gli è costato tanta fatica sotto il sole?

23 F or all his days are sorrows, and his travail vexation: even in the night his heart taketh no rest. This also is vanity.

Tutti i suoi giorni non sono che dolore, la sua occupazione non è che fastidio; perfino la notte il suo cuore non ha posa. Anche questo è vanità.

24 T here is nothing good for man, but that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

Non c’è nulla di meglio per l’uomo del mangiare, del bere e del godersi il benessere in mezzo alla fatica che egli sostiene; ma anche questo ho visto che viene dalla mano di Dio.

25 F or who can eat, or who be eager, more than I?

Infatti, chi senza di lui può mangiare o godere?

26 F or he giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he giveth travail to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good in God's sight. This also is vanity and pursuit of the wind.

Poiché Dio dà all’uomo che egli gradisce saggezza, intelligenza e gioia; ma al peccatore lascia il compito di raccogliere, di accumulare, per lasciare poi tutto a colui che è gradito agli occhi di Dio. Anche questo è vanità e un correre dietro al vento.
