1 A m I not free? am I not an apostle? have I not seen Jesus our Lord? are not ye my work in Lord?

Non sono libero? Non sono apostolo? Non ho veduto Gesù, il nostro Signore? Non siete voi l’opera mia nel Signore?

2 I f I am not an apostle to others, yet at any rate I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in Lord.

Se per altri non sono apostolo, lo sono almeno per voi; perché il sigillo del mio apostolato siete voi, nel Signore.

3 M y defence to those who examine me is this:

Questa è la mia difesa di fronte a quelli che mi sottopongono a inchiesta.

4 H ave we not a right to eat and to drink?

Non abbiamo forse il diritto di mangiare e di bere?

5 h ave we not a right to take round a sister wife, as also the other apostles, and the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?

Non abbiamo il diritto di condurre con noi una moglie, sorella in fede, come fanno anche gli altri apostoli e i fratelli del Signore e Cefa?

6 O r I alone and Barnabas, have we not a right not to work?

O siamo soltanto io e Barnaba a non avere il diritto di non lavorare?

7 W ho ever carries on war at his own charges? who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its fruit? or who herds a flock and does not eat of the milk of the flock?

Chi mai fa il soldato a proprie spese? Chi pianta una vigna e non ne mangia il frutto? O chi pascola un gregge e non si ciba del latte del gregge?

8 D o I speak these things as a man, or does not the law also say these things?

Dico forse queste cose da un punto di vista umano? Non le dice anche la legge?

9 F or in the law of Moses it is written, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that is treading out corn. Is God occupied about the oxen,

Difatti, nella legge di Mosè è scritto: «Non mettere la museruola al bue che trebbia il grano». Forse che Dio si dà pensiero dei buoi?

10 o r does he say altogether for our sakes? For for our sakes it has been written, that the plougher should plough in hope, and he that treads out corn, in hope of partaking of.

O non dice così proprio per noi? Certo, per noi fu scritto così; perché chi ara deve arare con speranza e chi trebbia il grano deve trebbiarlo con la speranza di averne la sua parte.

11 I f we have sown to you spiritual things, great if we shall reap your carnal things?

Se abbiamo seminato per voi i beni spirituali, è forse gran cosa se mietiamo i vostri beni materiali?

12 I f others partake of this right over you, should not rather we? But we have not used this right, but we bear all things, that we may put no hindrance in the way of the glad tidings of the Christ.

Se altri hanno questo diritto su di voi, non lo abbiamo noi molto di più? Ma non abbiamo fatto uso di questo diritto; anzi, sopportiamo ogni cosa per non creare alcun ostacolo al vangelo di Cristo.

13 D o ye not know that they who labour sacred things eat of the temple; they that attend at the altar partake with the altar?

Non sapete che quelli che fanno il servizio sacro mangiano ciò che è offerto nel tempio? E che coloro che attendono all’altare hanno parte all’altare?

14 S o also the Lord has ordained to those that announce the glad tidings to live of the glad tidings.

Similmente, il Signore ha ordinato che coloro che annunciano il vangelo vivano del vangelo.

15 B ut I have used none of these things. Now I have not written these things that it should be thus in my case; for good for me rather to die than that any one should make vain my boast.

Io però non ho fatto alcun uso di questi diritti, e non ho scritto questo perché si faccia così a mio riguardo; poiché preferirei morire, anziché vedere qualcuno rendere vano il mio vanto.

16 F or if I announce the glad tidings, I have nothing to boast of; for a necessity is laid upon me; for it is woe to me if I should not announce the glad tidings.

Perché se evangelizzo, non debbo vantarmi, poiché necessità me n’è imposta; e guai a me se non evangelizzo!

17 F or if I do this voluntarily, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with an administration.

Se lo faccio volenterosamente ne ho ricompensa; ma se non lo faccio volenterosamente è sempre un’amministrazione che mi è affidata.

18 W hat is the reward then that I have? That in announcing the glad tidings I make the glad tidings costless, so as not to have made use, as belonging to me, of my right in the glad tidings.

Qual è dunque la mia ricompensa? Questa: che, annunciando il vangelo, io offra il vangelo gratuitamente, senza valermi del diritto che il vangelo mi dà.

19 F or being free from all, I have made myself bondman to all, that I might gain the most.

Poiché, pur essendo libero da tutti, mi sono fatto servo di tutti, per guadagnarne il maggior numero;

20 A nd I became to the Jews as a Jew, in order that I might gain the Jews: to those under law, as under law, not being myself under law, in order that I might gain those under law:

con i Giudei mi sono fatto giudeo, per guadagnare i Giudei; con quelli che sono sotto la legge mi sono fatto come uno che è sotto la legge (benché io stesso non sia sottoposto alla legge), per guadagnare quelli che sono sotto la legge;

21 t o those without law, as without law, (not as without law to God, but as legitimately subject to Christ,) in order that I might gain without law.

con quelli che sono senza legge mi sono fatto come se fossi senza legge (pur non essendo senza la legge di Dio, ma essendo sotto la legge di Cristo), per guadagnare quelli che sono senza legge.

22 I became to the weak, weak, in order that I might gain the weak. To all I have become all things, in order that at all events I might save some.

Con i deboli mi sono fatto debole, per guadagnare i deboli; mi sono fatto ogni cosa a tutti, per salvarne ad ogni modo alcuni.

23 A nd I do all things for the sake of the glad tidings, that I may be fellow-partaker with them.

E faccio tutto per il vangelo, al fine di esserne partecipe insieme ad altri. Norme che regolano la corsa cristiana

24 K now ye not that they who run in race-course run all, but one receives the prize? Thus run in order that ye may obtain.

Non sapete che coloro i quali corrono nello stadio corrono tutti, ma uno solo ottiene il premio? Correte in modo da riportarlo.

25 B ut every one that contends is temperate in all things: they then indeed that they may receive a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible.

Chiunque fa l’atleta è temperato in ogni cosa; e quelli lo fanno per ricevere una corona corruttibile; ma noi, per una incorruttibile.

26 I therefore thus run, as not uncertainly; so I combat, as not beating the air.

Io quindi corro così; non in modo incerto; lotto al pugilato, ma non come chi batte l’aria;

27 B ut I buffet my body, and lead it captive, lest having preached to others I should be myself rejected.

anzi, tratto duramente il mio corpo e lo riduco in schiavitù, perché non avvenga che, dopo aver predicato agli altri, io stesso sia squalificato.
