1 A nd when the seventh month came, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered together as one man to Jerusalem.

Giunto il settimo mese, dopo che i figli d’Israele si furono stabiliti nelle loro città, il popolo si adunò come un sol uomo a Gerusalemme.

2 T hen stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer up burnt-offerings on it, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.

Allora Iesua, figlio di Iosadac, con i suoi fratelli sacerdoti, e Zorobabele, figlio di Sealtiel, con i suoi fratelli, si misero a costruire l’altare del Dio d’Israele, per offrirvi sopra olocausti, come è scritto nella legge di Mosè, uomo di Dio.

3 A nd they set the altar on its base; for fear was upon them because of the people of the countries; and they offered up burnt-offerings on it to Jehovah, the morning and evening burnt-offerings.

Ristabilirono l’altare sulle sue basi, sebbene temessero i popoli delle terre vicine, e offrirono sopra di esso olocausti al Signore: gli olocausti del mattino e della sera.

4 A nd they held the feast of tabernacles as it is written, and daily burnt-offerings by number, according to the ordinance, as the duty of every day required;

Celebrarono la festa delle Capanne, secondo quanto è scritto, e offrirono olocausti giorno per giorno, nel numero prescritto per ciascun giorno.

5 a nd afterwards the continual burnt-offering, and those of the new moons, and of all the set feasts of Jehovah that were consecrated, and of every one that willingly offered a voluntary offering to Jehovah.

Poi offrirono l’olocausto continuo, gli olocausti dei noviluni e di tutte le solennità sacre del Signore, e quelli di chi faceva qualche offerta volontaria al Signore.

6 F rom the first day of the seventh month they began to offer up burnt-offerings to Jehovah. But the foundation of the temple of Jehovah was not laid.

Dal primo giorno del settimo mese cominciarono a offrire olocausti al Signore; ma le fondamenta del tempio del Signore non erano ancora state poste.

7 A nd they gave money to the masons and to the carpenters; and meat and drink and oil to the Zidonians and to the Tyrians, to bring cedar-trees from Lebanon to the sea at Joppa, according to the grant that they had of Cyrus king of Persia.

Diedero del denaro agli scalpellini e ai falegnami, dei viveri, delle bevande e dell’olio ai Sidoni e ai Tiri perché portassero per mare sino a Iafo del legno di cedro del Libano, secondo la concessione che Ciro, re di Persia, aveva loro fatta. Le fondamenta del tempio

8 A nd in the second year of their coming to the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, began Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that had come out of the captivity to Jerusalem; and they appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to superintend the work of the house of Jehovah.

Il secondo anno dopo il loro arrivo alla casa di Dio, a Gerusalemme, il secondo mese, Zorobabele, figlio di Sealtiel, Iesua, figlio di Iosadac, con gli altri loro fratelli, sacerdoti e Leviti, e tutti quelli che erano tornati dall’esilio a Gerusalemme, si misero all’opera; incaricarono i Leviti dai vent’anni in su di dirigere i lavori della casa del Signore.

9 A nd Jeshua stood up, his sons and his brethren, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, as one, to superintend the workmen in the house of God; the sons of Henadad, their sons and their brethren, the Levites.

Iesua con i suoi figli e i suoi fratelli, Cadmiel con i suoi figli, figli di Giuda, si presentarono come un sol uomo per dirigere quelli che lavoravano alla casa di Dio; lo stesso fecero i figli di Chenadad con i loro figli e con i loro fratelli, i Leviti.

10 A nd when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of Jehovah, they set the priests in their apparel, with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise Jehovah according to the directions of David king of Israel.

Quando i costruttori posero le fondamenta del tempio del Signore, vi si fecero assistere i sacerdoti vestiti dei loro paramenti, con delle trombe, e i Leviti, figli di Asaf, con dei cembali, per lodare il Signore, secondo le direttive date da Davide, re d’Israele.

11 A nd they sang alternately together in praising and giving thanks to Jehovah: For he is good, for his loving-kindness for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout to the praise of Jehovah, because the foundation of the house of Jehovah was laid.

Essi cantavano rispondendosi a vicenda, celebrando e lodando il Signore: «Perché egli è buono, perché la sua bontà verso Israele dura in eterno». E tutto il popolo, gridando di gioia, lodava il Signore, perché si erano poste le fondamenta della casa del Signore.

12 B ut many of the priests and Levites and chief fathers, the ancient men that had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice, the foundation of this house was laid in their sight; and many shouted aloud for joy.

Molti sacerdoti, Leviti e capi famiglia anziani, che avevano visto la prima casa, piangevano ad alta voce mentre si ponevano le fondamenta della nuova casa. Molti altri invece alzavano le loro voci, gridando per la gioia,

13 A nd the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people; for the people shouted with a great shout, and the noise was heard afar off.

al punto che non si poteva distinguere il rumore delle grida di gioia da quello del pianto del popolo; perché il popolo gridava forte, e il rumore si udiva da lontano.
