1 A nd Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king's heart was toward Absalom.

Ioab, figlio di Seruia, accortosi che il cuore del re si placava verso Absalom,

2 A nd Joab sent to Tekoah, and fetched thence a wise woman, and said to her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on mourning garments, I pray, and anoint not thyself with oil, but be as a woman that hath a long time mourned for the dead;

fece venire da Tecoa una donna saggia alla quale disse: «Fingi di essere in lutto: mettiti una veste da lutto, non ti ungere con olio e sii come una donna che pianga da molto tempo un morto;

3 a nd come to the king, and speak after this manner to him. And Joab put the words into her mouth.

poi entra dove sta il re e parlagli così e così». Ioab le suggerì le parole da dire.

4 A nd the woman of Tekoah spoke to the king, and she fell on her face to the ground and did obeisance, and said, Save, O king!

La donna di Tecoa andò dunque a parlare al re, si gettò con la faccia a terra, si prostrò e disse: «O re, aiutami!»

5 A nd the king said to her, What aileth thee? And she said, I am indeed a widow woman, and my husband is dead.

Il re le disse: «Che hai?» Lei rispose: «Purtroppo io sono una vedova. Mio marito è morto.

6 A nd thy bondmaid had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other and slew him.

La tua serva aveva due figli, i quali litigarono in campagna e vennero alle mani; siccome non c’era nessuno che li separasse, uno colpì l’altro e l’uccise.

7 A nd behold, the whole family is risen against thy bondmaid, and they say, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may put him to death, for the life of his brother whom he killed; and we will destroy the heir also: so they will quench my coal which is left, and will not leave to my husband a name or remnant on the earth.

Ora tutta la famiglia è insorta contro la tua serva, dicendo: “Consegnaci l’omicida, affinché lo facciamo morire per vendicare il fratello che egli ha ucciso; così toglieremo di mezzo anche l’erede”. In questo modo spegneranno il tizzone che mi è rimasto e non lasceranno a mio marito né nome né discendenza sulla terra».

8 A nd the king said to the woman, Go to thy house, and I will give charge concerning thee.

Il re disse alla donna: «Va’ a casa tua; io darò degli ordini a tuo riguardo».

9 A nd the woman of Tekoah said to the king, Upon me, my lord, O king, be the iniquity, and upon my father's house; and the king and his throne be guiltless.

La donna di Tecoa disse al re: «O re, mio signore, la colpa cada su di me e sulla casa di mio padre, ma il re e il suo trono non ne siano responsabili».

10 A nd the king said, Whoever speaks to thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch thee any more.

Replicò il re: «Se qualcuno parla contro di te, conducilo da me, e vedrai che non ti toccherà più».

11 T hen she said, I pray thee, let the king remember Jehovah thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they cut off my son. And he said, Jehovah liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.

Allora lei disse: «Ti prego, invochi il re come testimone il Signore, il tuo Dio, perché il vendicatore del sangue non aumenti la rovina e non mi uccidano il figlio». Egli rispose: «Com’è vero che il Signore vive, non cadrà a terra un capello di tuo figlio».

12 A nd the woman said, Let thy bondmaid, I pray thee, speak a word to my lord the king. And he said, Speak.

Allora la donna disse: «Ti prego, lascia che la tua serva dica ancora una parola al re mio signore!» Egli rispose: «Parla».

13 A nd the woman said, Why then hast thou thought such a thing against God's people? and the king in saying this thing, is as one guilty, in that the king does not bring back his banished one.

La donna riprese: «Perché pensi così contro il popolo di Dio? Dalla parola che il re ha ora pronunciata risulta che egli è in un certo modo colpevole, in quanto non richiama colui che ha messo al bando.

14 F or we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; and God has not taken away his life, but devises means that the banished one be not expelled from him.

Noi dobbiamo morire e siamo come acqua versata in terra che non si può più raccogliere; ma Dio non toglie la vita, anzi desidera che il fuggitivo non rimanga bandito lontano da lui.

15 A nd now that I am come to speak of this thing to my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid; and thy bondmaid said, I will now speak to the king; perhaps the king will perform the request of his handmaid.

Ora, se io sono venuta a parlare così al re mio signore, è perché il popolo mi ha fatto paura e la tua serva ha detto: “Voglio parlare al re; forse il re farà quello che gli dirà la sua serva;

16 F or the king will hear, to deliver his handmaid out of the hand of the man that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.

il re ascolterà la sua serva e la libererà dalle mani di quelli che vogliono sterminare me e mio figlio dall’eredità di Dio”.

17 A nd thy bondmaid said, Let the word of my lord the king now be comfortable; for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad; and Jehovah thy God will be with thee.

La tua serva diceva: “Possa la parola del re mio signore darmi tranquillità!” Infatti il re mio signore è come un angelo di Dio per discernere il bene dal male. Il Signore, il tuo Dio, sia con te».

18 A nd the king answered and said to the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak.

Il re rispose e disse alla donna: «Ti prego, non nascondermi quello che io ti domanderò». La donna disse: «Parli pure il re, mio signore».

19 A nd the king said, Is the hand of Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, thy soul liveth, my lord, O king, there is no turning to the right hand or to the left from aught that my lord the king has spoken; for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words into the mouth of thy bondmaid:

Il re le chiese: «Non c’è dietro a tutto questo la mano di Ioab?» La donna rispose: «Com’è vero che tu vivi, o re, mio signore, la cosa sta né più né meno come ha detto il re mio signore. Infatti, il tuo servo Ioab è colui che mi ha dato questi ordini ed è lui che ha suggerito tutte queste parole alla tua serva.

20 i n order to turn the appearance of the thing has thy servant Joab done this thing; but my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all that is in the earth.

Il tuo servo Ioab ha fatto così per dare un altro aspetto alla vicenda di Absalom; ma il mio signore è saggio come un angelo di Dio e conosce tutto quello che avviene sulla terra».

21 A nd the king said to Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: so go, bring back the young man Absalom.

Allora il re disse a Ioab: «Voglio fare quello che hai chiesto; va’ dunque e fa’ tornare il giovane Absalom».

22 A nd Joab fell to the ground on his face and bowed himself, and blessed the king; and Joab said, To-day thy servant knows that I have found favour in thy sight, my lord, O king, in that the king has fulfilled the request of his servant.

Ioab si gettò con la faccia a terra, si prostrò, benedisse il re e disse: «Oggi il tuo servo riconosce che ha trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi, o re, mio signore; poiché il re ha fatto quello che il suo servo gli ha chiesto».

23 A nd Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.

Ioab dunque partì, andò a Ghesur e condusse Absalom a Gerusalemme.

24 A nd the king said, Let him turn to his own house, and let him not see my face. And Absalom withdrew to his own house, and saw not the king's face.

Il re disse: «Si ritiri in casa sua e non veda la mia faccia!» Così Absalom si ritirò in casa sua e non vide la faccia del re.

25 B ut in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.

In tutto Israele non c’era uomo che fosse celebrato per la sua bellezza quanto Absalom; dalla pianta del piede fino alla sommità del capo non c’era in lui nessun difetto.

26 A nd when he shaved his head (for it was at every year's end that he shaved it, because it was heavy on him, therefore he shaved it), he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels after the king's weight.

Quando si faceva tagliare i capelli (e se li faceva tagliare ogni anno perché la capigliatura gli pesava troppo) il peso dei suoi capelli era di duecento sicli a peso del re.

27 A nd to Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a beautiful countenance.

Ad Absalom nacquero tre figli e una figlia di nome Tamar, che era donna di bell’aspetto.

28 S o Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and did not see the king's face.

Absalom abitò a Gerusalemme due anni senza vedere la faccia del re.

29 T hen Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king; but he would not come to him; and he sent again the second time, but he would not come.

Poi Absalom fece chiamare Ioab per mandarlo dal re; ma egli non volle venire da lui; lo mandò a chiamare una seconda volta, ma Ioab non volle venire.

30 T hen he said to his servants, See, Joab's allotment is near mine and he has barley there: go and set it on fire. And Absalom's servants set the allotment on fire.

Allora Absalom disse ai suoi servi: «Guardate! Il campo di Ioab è vicino al mio e c’è dell’orzo; andate a dargli fuoco!» I servi di Absalom incendiarono il campo.

31 T hen Joab arose, and came to Absalom to house, and said to him, Why have thy servants set my allotment on fire?

Allora Ioab si alzò, andò a casa di Absalom e gli disse: «Perché i tuoi servi hanno incendiato il mio campo?»

32 A nd Absalom said to Joab, Behold, I sent to thee, saying, Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Why am I come from Geshur? it would have been better for me to be there still. And now let me see the king's face; and if there be iniquity in me, let him slay me.

Absalom rispose a Ioab: «Io ti avevo mandato a dire: “Vieni qua, perché possa mandarti dal re a dirgli: ‘Perché sono tornato da Ghesur? Sarebbe meglio per me se io fossi ancora là!’”. Dunque fa’ in modo che io veda la faccia del re! Se sono colpevole, mi faccia pure morire!»

33 A nd Joab came to the king, and told him. And he called Absalom, and he came to the king, and bowed himself on his face to the ground before the king; and the king kissed Absalom.

Ioab allora andò dal re e gli fece l’ambasciata. Il re fece chiamare Absalom, il quale venne a lui e si prostrò con la faccia a terra in sua presenza; e il re baciò Absalom.
