1 M oreover Elihu answered and said,

Eliu riprese a parlare e disse:

2 H ear my words, ye wise; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.

«Voi savi, ascoltate le mie parole! Voi che siete intelligenti, prestatemi orecchio!

3 F or the ear trieth words, as the palate tasteth food.

Poiché l’orecchio giudica i discorsi, come il palato assapora le vivande.

4 L et us choose for ourselves what is right; let us know among ourselves what is good!

Scegliamo quello che è giusto, riconosciamo tra noi quello che è buono.

5 F or Job hath said, I am righteous, and God hath taken away my judgment:

Giobbe ha detto: “Sono giusto, ma Dio mi nega giustizia;

6 S hould I lie against my right? My wound is incurable without transgression.

ho ragione e passo da bugiardo; la mia ferita è incurabile e sono senza peccato”.

7 W hat man is like Job? he drinketh up scorning like water,

Dov’è l’uomo che al pari di Giobbe tracanni gli empi scherni come l’acqua,

8 A nd goeth in company with workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men.

cammini in compagnia dei malfattori e vada assieme con gli scellerati?

9 F or he hath said, It profiteth not a man if he delight himself in God.

Infatti ha detto: “All’uomo non giova a nulla avere la benevolenza di Dio”.

10 T herefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: Far be wickedness from God, and wrong from the Almighty!

«Ascoltatemi dunque, uomini di senno! Lungi da Dio il male, lungi dall’Onnipotente l’iniquità!

11 F or a man's work will he render to him, and cause every one to find according to way.

Poich’egli rende all’uomo secondo le sue opere, fa trovare a ognuno il salario della sua condotta.

12 Y ea, surely, God acteth not wickedly, and the Almighty perverteth not judgment.

No, di certo Dio non commette ingiustizie! L’Onnipotente non perverte il diritto.

13 W ho hath entrusted to him the earth? and who hath disposed the whole world?

Chi gli ha dato il governo della terra? Chi ha affidato l’universo alla sua cura?

14 I f he only thought of himself, gathered unto him his spirit and his breath,

Se egli non si curasse che di se stesso, se ritirasse a sé il suo Spirito e il suo soffio,

15 A ll flesh would expire together, and man would return to the dust.

ogni carne perirebbe all’improvviso e l’uomo ritornerebbe in polvere.

16 I f now understanding, hear this: give ear to the voice of my words!

Se tu sei intelligente, ascolta questo, porgi orecchio alla voce delle mie parole.

17 S hould he that hateth right indeed govern? and wilt thou condemn the All-just?

Uno che odiasse la giustizia potrebbe governare? Osi tu condannare il Giusto, il Potente,

18 S hall one say to a king, Belial? to nobles, Wicked?

che chiama i re “uomini da nulla!” e i prìncipi “scellerati”?

19 t hat accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich man more than the poor? for they are all the work of his hands.

Egli non porta rispetto all’apparenza dei grandi, non considera il ricco più del povero, perché sono tutti opera delle sue mani.

20 I n a moment they die, even at midnight the people are convulsed and pass away; and the strong are taken away without hand.

In un attimo essi muoiono; nel cuore della notte la gente del popolo è scossa e scompare, i potenti sono portati via, senza mano d’uomo.

21 F or his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his steps.

Perché Dio tiene gli occhi aperti sulle vie dei mortali, e vede tutti i loro passi.

22 T here is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

Non ci sono tenebre, non c’è ombra di morte dove possa nascondersi chi opera iniquamente.

23 F or he doth not long consider a man, to bring him before God in judgment.

Dio non ha bisogno di osservare a lungo un uomo per portarlo davanti a lui in giudizio.

24 H e breaketh in pieces mighty men without inquiry, and setteth others in their stead;

Egli fiacca i potenti senza inchiesta e ne stabilisce altri al loro posto;

25 S ince he knoweth their actions; and he overthroweth in the night, and they are crushed.

poiché egli conosce le loro azioni. Li abbatte nella notte e sono fiaccati;

26 H e striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others,

li colpisce come dei malvagi, in presenza di tutti,

27 B ecause they have turned back from him, and would consider none of his ways;

perché si sono sviati da lui e non hanno posto mente ad alcuna delle sue vie.

28 S o that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted.

Hanno fatto salire a lui il gemito del povero, ed egli ha dato ascolto al gemito degli infelici.

29 W hen he giveth quietness, who then will disturb? and when he hideth face, who shall behold him? and this towards a nation, or towards a man alike;

Quando Dio dà riposo, chi lo condannerà? Chi potrà contemplarlo quando nasconde il suo volto a una nazione ovvero a un individuo,

30 T hat the ungodly man reign not, that the people be not ensnared.

per impedire all’empio di regnare, per allontanare dal popolo le insidie?

31 F or hath he said unto God, I bear, I will not offend;

Quell’empio ha forse detto a Dio: “Io porto la mia pena, non farò più il male,

32 W hat I see not, teach thou me; if I have done wrong, I will do so no more?

mostrami tu quel che non so vedere; se ho agito perversamente, non lo farò più”?

33 S hall he recompense according to thy mind? for thou hast refused; for thou so choosest, and not I; speak then what thou knowest.

«Dovrà forse Dio rendere la giustizia a modo tuo, perché tu lo critichi? Ti dirà forse: “Scegli tu, non io; quello che sai, dillo”?

34 M en of understanding will say to me, and a wise man who heareth me:

Le persone assennate, e ogni uomo saggio che mi ascolta, mi diranno:

35 J ob hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were not with intelligence.

“Giobbe parla senza giudizio, le sue parole sono irragionevoli”.

36 W ould that Job may be tried unto the end, because of answers after the manner of evil men!

Ebbene, sia Giobbe provato sino alla fine, poiché le sue risposte sono quelle dei malvagi,

37 F or he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth among us, and multiplieth his words against God.

poiché al suo peccato aggiunge la ribellione, batte le mani in mezzo a noi e moltiplica le sue parole contro Dio».
