1 B e gracious unto me, O God, according to thy loving-kindness; according to the abundance of thy tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.

Al direttore del coro. Salmo di Davide, quando il profeta Natan venne da lui, dopo che Davide era stato da Bat-Sceba. Abbi pietà di me, o Dio, per la tua bontà; nella tua grande misericordia cancella i miei misfatti.

2 W ash me fully from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

Lavami da tutte le mie iniquità e purificami dal mio peccato;

3 F or I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is continually before me.

poiché riconosco le mie colpe, il mio peccato è sempre davanti a me.

4 A gainst thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done what is evil in thy sight; that thou mayest be justified when thou speakest, be clear when thou judgest.

Ho peccato contro te, contro te solo, ho fatto ciò che è male agli occhi tuoi. Perciò sei giusto quando parli e irreprensibile quando giudichi.

5 B ehold, in iniquity was I brought forth, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Ecco, io sono stato generato nell’iniquità, mia madre mi ha concepito nel peccato.

6 B ehold, thou wilt have truth in the inward parts; and in the hidden thou wilt make me to know wisdom.

Ma tu desideri che la verità risieda nell’intimo; insegnami dunque la sapienza nel segreto del cuore.

7 P urge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Purificami con issopo, e sarò puro; lavami, e sarò più bianco della neve.

8 M ake me to hear gladness and joy; the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

Fammi di nuovo udire canti di gioia e di letizia, ed esulteranno quelle ossa che hai spezzate.

9 H ide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

Distogli lo sguardo dai miei peccati e cancella tutte le mie colpe.

10 C reate in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

O Dio, crea in me un cuore puro e rinnova dentro di me uno spirito ben saldo.

11 C ast me not away from thy presence, and take not the spirit of thy holiness from me.

Non respingermi dalla tua presenza e non togliermi il tuo santo Spirito.

12 R estore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and let a willing spirit sustain me.

Rendimi la gioia della tua salvezza e uno spirito volenteroso mi sostenga.

13 I will teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners shall return unto thee.

Insegnerò le tue vie ai colpevoli, e i peccatori si convertiranno a te.

14 D eliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

Liberami dal sangue versato, o Dio, Dio della mia salvezza, e la mia lingua celebrerà la tua giustizia.

15 L ord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare thy praise.

Signore, apri tu le mie labbra e la mia bocca proclamerà la tua lode.

16 F or thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou hast no pleasure in burnt-offering.

Tu infatti non desideri sacrifici, altrimenti li offrirei, né gradisci olocausto.

17 T he sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Sacrificio gradito a Dio è uno spirito afflitto; tu, Dio, non disprezzi un cuore abbattuto e umiliato.

18 D o good in thy good pleasure unto Zion; build the walls of Jerusalem.

Fa’ del bene a Sion, nella tua grazia; edifica le mura di Gerusalemme.

19 T hen shalt thou have sacrifices of righteousness, burnt-offering, and whole burnt-offering; then shall they offer up bullocks upon thine altar.

Allora gradirai sacrifici di giustizia, olocausti e vittime arse per intero; allora si offriranno tori sul tuo altare.
