1 T he words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the fortress,

2 t hat Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and men of Judah. And I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, who were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.

Anani, un mio fratello, e alcuni altri uomini arrivarono da Giuda. Io li interrogai riguardo ai Giudei scampati, superstiti della deportazione, e riguardo a Gerusalemme.

3 A nd they said to me, Those who remain, that are left of the captivity there in the province, are in great affliction and reproach; and the wall of Jerusalem is in ruins, and its gates are burned with fire.

E quelli mi risposero: “I superstiti della deportazione sono là, nella provincia, in gran miseria e nell’umiliazione; le mura di Gerusalemme restano in rovina e le sue porte sono consumate dal fuoco”.

4 A nd it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat and wept, and mourned for days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of the heavens,

Quando udii queste parole mi misi seduto, piansi, e per molti giorni fui in grande tristezza. Digiunai e pregai davanti al Dio del cielo.

5 a nd said, I beseech thee, Jehovah, God of the heavens, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and keep his commandments.

E dissi: “O Signore, Dio del cielo, Dio grande e tremendo, che mantieni il patto e fai misericordia a quelli che ti amano e osservano i tuoi comandamenti.

6 L et thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, to hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee at this time, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, confessing the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned.

Siano i tuoi orecchi attenti, i tuoi occhi aperti per ascoltare la preghiera che il tuo servo ti rivolge adesso, giorno e notte, per i figli d’Israele, tuoi servi, confessando i peccati dei figli d’Israele: perché abbiamo peccato contro di te; abbiamo peccato io e la casa di mio padre.

7 W e have acted very perversely against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the ordinances that thou commandedst thy servant Moses.

Abbiamo agito da malvagi contro di te e non abbiamo osservato i comandamenti, le leggi e le prescrizioni che tu hai dato a Mosè, tuo servo.

8 R emember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye act unfaithfully, I will scatter you among the peoples;

Ricòrdati della parola che ordinasti al tuo servo Mosè di pronunciare: ‘Se sarete infedeli, io vi disperderò fra i popoli;

9 b ut if ye return to me, and keep my commandments and do them, though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heavens, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.

ma se tornerete a me e osserverete i miei comandamenti e li metterete in pratica, anche se sarete dispersi negli estremi confini del mondo, io di là vi raccoglierò e vi ricondurrò al luogo che ho scelto per farne la dimora del mio nome’.

10 A nd they are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power and by thy strong hand.

Essi sono tuoi servi, tuo popolo; tu li hai salvati con la tua grande potenza e con la tua forte mano.

11 O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants who delight to fear thy name; and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. Now I was the king's cupbearer.

Signore, te ne prego, siano i tuoi orecchi attenti alla preghiera del tuo servo e alla preghiera dei tuoi servi, che vogliono temere il tuo nome; e concedi oggi, ti prego, successo al tuo servo, e fa’ che egli trovi pietà presso quest’uomo”. A quel tempo io ero coppiere del re.
