1 M y son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.

Fiul meu, păstrează cuvintele mele şi strânge la tine îndrumările mele!

2 K eep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.

Păstrează îndrumările mele şi vei trăi; păzeşte învăţătura mea ca pe lumina ochilor!

3 B ind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.

Leagă-le la degete, scrie-le pe tăbliţa inimii tale!

4 S ay unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:

Spune înţelepciunii: „Tu eşti sora mea!“ şi numeşte priceperea rudenia ta,

5 t hat they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.

ca să te protejeze de femeia adulteră, de cuvintele ademenitoare ale unei străine.

6 F or at the window of my house I looked through my casement,

De la fereastra casei mele priveam printre zăbrele.

7 a nd beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,

Am văzut printre cei neîncercaţi, am remarcat printre tineri un băiat fără minte:

8 p assing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,

trecea pe strada din apropierea colţului ei şi a păşit pe calea spre locuinţa ei.

9 i n the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:

Se întunecase şi se lăsase negura nopţii.

10 a nd, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.

Atunci l-a întâlnit o femeie îmbrăcată ca o prostituată şi cu inima şireată.

11 ( She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:

Era gălăgioasă şi răzvrătită; picioarele nu-i stăteau acasă:

12 n ow is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)

când pe străzi, când în pieţe, stând la pândă la orice colţ.

13 S o she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,

Ea l-a îmbrăţişat şi l-a sărutat şi, cu o faţă fără ruşine, i-a zis:

14 I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.

„Am acasă jertfe de pace; astăzi mi-am împlinit jurămintele.

15 T herefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.

De aceea am ieşit să te întâlnesc, să te caut cu ardoare; şi te-am găsit!

16 I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.

Mi-am împodobit patul cu pânzeturi colorate din Egipt;

17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

mi-am înmiresmat patul cu smirnă, aloe şi scorţişoară.

18 C ome, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.

Vino să ne îmbătăm de dragoste până dimineaţă, să ne desfătăm în dragoste!

19 F or the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:

Căci bărbatul nu este în casa lui, a plecat într-o călătorie lungă.

20 h e hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.

A luat cu el punga cu argint şi nu va veni la casa lui până la lună nouă.“

21 W ith her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.

Ea l-a convins prin cuvinte stăruitoare şi l-a sedus cu buzele ei linguşitoare.

22 H e goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;

Deodată, el a urmat-o, ca un bou care este dus la înjunghiere, ca un cerb care aleargă spre laţ

23 t ill a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

până când săgeata îi va străpunge ficatul, ca o pasăre ce se repede în capcană fără să ştie că o va costa viaţa.

24 H earken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.

Şi acum, fiilor, ascultaţi-mă şi fiţi atenţi la ce vă spun!

25 L et not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.

Fiule, nu-ţi lăsa inima să se abată spre calea ei şi nu rătăci pe cărările ei,

26 F or she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.

căci mulţi sunt cei înjunghiaţi pe care ea i-a făcut să cadă, şi numeroşi sunt toţi cei ucişi de ea.

27 H er house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

Casa ei este pe calea spre Locuinţa Morţilor, coborând spre odăile morţii.
