1 A nd an angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

Îngerul Domnului S-a suit de la Ghilgal la Bochim şi a zis: „Eu v-am scos din Egipt şi v-am adus în ţara pe care le-am promis-o strămoşilor voştri! Am spus: «Niciodată nu voi rupe legământul Meu cu voi.

2 A nd ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?

Iar voi să nu încheiaţi legământ cu locuitorii acestei ţări, ci să le dărâmaţi altarele!» Voi însă nu aţi ascultat de glasul Meu! De ce aţi făcut lucrul acesta?

3 W herefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.

Acum vă spun din nou: «Nu-i voi izgoni dinaintea voastră, ci vă vor fi ca nişte spini în coaste, iar zeii lor vă vor fi o ispită!»“

4 A nd it came to pass, when the angel of the Lord spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

După ce le-a zis israeliţilor toate aceste cuvinte, aceştia au început să plângă.

5 A nd they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the Lord.

Au numit locul acela Bochim şi au adus acolo jertfe Domnului. Starea poporului în timpul vieţii lui Iosua şi după moartea acestuia

6 A nd when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.

După ce Iosua a dat drumul poporului, israeliţii s-au dus să ia în stăpânire ţara, fiecare la moştenirea lui.

7 A nd the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel.

Poporul a slujit Domnului cât timp a trăit Iosua şi bătrânii de după Iosua, care văzuseră toate lucrările mari pe care le făcuse Domnul pentru Israel.

8 A nd Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being an hundred and ten years old.

Iosua, fiul lui Nun, robul Domnului, a murit la vârsta de o sută zece ani.

9 A nd they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.

L-au înmormântat în teritoriul pe care-l primise ca moştenire, la Timnat-Heres, în regiunea muntoasă a lui Efraim, la nord de muntele Gaaş.

10 A nd also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.

Apoi toţi cei din generaţia aceea au fost adăugaţi la părinţii lor, iar după ei s-a ridicat o altă generaţie care nu-L cunoştea nici pe Domnul şi nici lucrările făcute de El pentru Israel.

11 A nd the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim:

Atunci israeliţii au făcut ce este rău în ochii Domnului şi au slujit baalilor.

12 a nd they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the Lord to anger.

L-au părăsit pe Domnul, Dumnezeul strămoşilor lor, Care-i scosese din ţara Egiptului şi s-au dus după zei dintre zeii popoarelor care-i înconjurau. S-au închinat înaintea lor şi L-au mâniat pe Domnul.

13 A nd they forsook the Lord, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

Astfel, L-au părăsit pe Domnul şi au slujit lui Baal şi aştoretelor.

14 A nd the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

Domnul s-a aprins de mânie împotriva lui Israel şi i-a dat pe israeliţi pe mâna jefuitorilor care i-au prădat şi pe mâna duşmanilor din vecinătate, cărora n-au mai fost în stare să li se împotrivească.

15 W hithersoever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.

Oriunde mergeau, mâna Domnului era împotriva lor ca să le facă rău, aşa cum îi avertizase şi le jurase El mai demult. Au ajuns astfel într-un mare necaz.

16 N evertheless the Lord raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.

Domnul le-a ridicat judecători ca să-i elibereze din mâna jefuitorilor lor.

17 A nd yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the Lord; but they did not so.

Dar nici de judecătorii lor n-au ascultat, ci s-au prostituat cu zeii, închinându-se înaintea lor. S-au abătut repede de la calea pe care umblaseră strămoşii lor, cei care ascultaseră de poruncile Domnului, şi nu au făcut ca şi ei.

18 A nd when the Lord raised them up judges, then the Lord was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the Lord because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

Când Domnul le ridica un judecător, Domnul era cu acel judecător şi El îi elibera din mâna duşmanilor lor, astfel că, atâta timp cât trăia judecătorul, ei erau liberi. Domnului I se făcea milă de ei când suspinau înaintea celor ce-i prigoneau şi-i asupreau.

19 A nd it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

Dar după ce murea judecătorul, ei se întorceau iarăşi la căile lor şi se stricau mai mult decât înaintaşii lor, ducându-se după alţi dumnezei, slujindu-le şi închinându-se înaintea lor; şi nu renunţau la faptele şi la căile lor rele.

20 A nd the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;

Atunci Domnul s-a aprins de mânie împotriva lui Israel şi a zis: „Fiindcă poporul acesta a încălcat legământul pe care îl poruncisem strămoşilor lui şi nu a ascultat de glasul Meu,

21 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:

nu voi mai continua să izgonesc dinaintea lui pe nici unul din neamurile pe care le-a lăsat Iosua când a murit,

22 t hat through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the Lord to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.

pentru ca, prin ele, să-l pun la încercare pe Israel şi să văd dacă va păzi Calea Domnului, umblând pe ea aşa cum au făcut strămoşii lui!“

23 T herefore the Lord left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

Prin urmare, Domnul a lăsat acele neamuri, pe care nu le dăduse mai repede în mâna lui Iosua, să rămână la locul lor şi nu le-a izgonit.
