1 A nd the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why hast thou served us thus, that thou calledst us not, when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites? And they did chide with him sharply.

Efraimiţii i-au zis lui Ghedeon: – Cum ai putut să te porţi astfel cu noi? De ce nu ne-ai chemat şi pe noi când te-ai dus să lupţi împotriva midianiţilor? Şi au început o ceartă aprigă cu el.

2 A nd he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abi-ezer?

El le-a răspuns: – Ce-am făcut eu în comparaţie cu voi? Nu este mai bun culesul ciorchinilor rămaşi în via lui Efraim decât culesul întregii vii a lui Abiezer?

3 G od hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison of you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

În mâinile voastre i-a dat Dumnezeu pe Oreb şi Zeeb, căpeteniile midianiţilor! Am putut eu oare să fac mai mult decât voi? După ce le-a spus aceste cuvinte li s-a potolit mânia. Ghedeon îi omoară pe regii midianiţi

4 A nd Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.

Apoi Ghedeon a ajuns la Iordan şi l-a traversat împreună cu cei trei sute de oameni care erau cu el, obosiţi, dar încă în urmărirea duşmanului.

5 A nd he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

El le-a zis oamenilor din Sucot: – Daţi-le, vă rog, câteva bucăţi de pâine oamenilor care sunt cu mine, căci sunt obosiţi şi suntem încă în urmărirea lui Zebah şi Ţalmuna, regii Midianului!

6 A nd the princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thine army?

Căpeteniile din Sucot i-au răspuns: – Sunt deja mâinile lui Zebah şi Ţalmuna în posesia ta ca să dăm pâine oştirii tale?

7 A nd Gideon said, Therefore when the Lord hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

Ghedeon le-a zis: – Aşa deci! Ei bine, după ce Domnul îi va da pe Zebah şi pe Ţalmuna în mâinile mele, vă voi sfârteca carnea cu spinii pustiei şi cu mărăcini!

8 A nd he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.

De acolo s-au suit la Peniel şi a cerut acelaşi lucru. Oamenii din Peniel i-au răspuns aşa cum îi răspunseseră oamenii din Sucot.

9 A nd he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.

Atunci el le-a zis oamenilor din Peniel: „Când mă voi întoarce în pace vă voi dărâma turnul acesta!“

10 N ow Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all that were left of all the hosts of the children of the east: for there fell an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword.

Zebah şi Ţalmuna erau în Karkor, împreună cu ei fiind şi oştirea lor, în jur de cincisprezece mii de bărbaţi, singurii care mai rămăseseră din oştirea popoarelor răsăritului căci căzuseră ucişi o sută douăzeci de mii de războinici.

11 A nd Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host: for the host was secure.

Ghedeon a apucat pe calea nomazilor, la răsărit de Nobah şi Iogbeha şi a atacat oştirea care se credea în siguranţă.

12 A nd when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and discomfited all the host.

Cei doi regi ai Midianului, Zebah şi Ţalmuna, au fugit, dar el i-a urmărit, i-a capturat şi a provocat groază în rândul întregii lor oştiri.

13 A nd Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle before the sun was up,

Apoi Ghedeon, fiul lui Ioaş, s-a întors de la luptă prin trecătoarea Heres.

14 a nd caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him: and he described unto him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, even threescore and seventeen men.

A prins un tânăr dintre oamenii din Sucot căruia i-a pus câteva întrebări. Acesta i-a dat în scris numele căpeteniilor şi ale membrilor sfatului bătrânilor din Sucot. Erau şaptezeci şi şapte de bărbaţi.

15 A nd he came unto the men of Succoth, and said, Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye did upbraid me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand, that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary?

S-a dus la oamenii din Sucot şi le-a zis: „Iată-i pe Zebah şi Ţalmuna din cauza cărora m-aţi batjocorit zicând: Sunt deja Zebah şi Ţalmuna în stăpânirea ta ca să dăm pâine oştirii tale?“

16 A nd he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.

I-a luat pe cei din sfatul bătrânilor cetăţii, a luat spini din pustie şi mărăcini şi i-a pedepsit cu ei pe oamenii din Sucot.

17 A nd he beat down the tower of Penuel, and slew the men of the city.

Apoi a dărâmat turnul din Peniel şi i-a ucis pe oamenii cetăţii.

18 T hen said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom ye slew at Tabor? And they answered, As thou art, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.

După aceea le-a zis lui Zebah şi Ţalmuna: – Cum erau bărbaţii pe care i-aţi ucis la Tabor? Ei i-au răspuns: – Erau ca tine! Fiecare era la înfăţişare ca un fiu de rege!

19 A nd he said, They were my brethren, even the sons of my mother: as the Lord liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.

El le-a zis: – Erau fraţii mei, fiii mamei mele! Viu este Domnul că dacă i-aţi fi lăsat în viaţă, nu v-aş ucide acum!

20 A nd he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up, and slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

Şi i-a zis lui Ieter, întâiul lui născut: – Omoară-i! Dar tânărul nu a scos sabia pentru că îi era frică, fiind încă un copil.

21 T hen Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.

Atunci Zebah şi Ţalmuna i-au zis: – De ce nu ne omori tu însuţi? Cum este omul aşa este şi puterea lui! Ghedeon s-a sculat şi i-a ucis pe Zebah şi pe Ţalmuna, luând apoi lunişoarele care erau la gâtul cămilelor lor. Idolatria lui Ghedeon şi a poporului

22 T hen the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.

Bărbaţii lui Israel i-au zis lui Ghedeon: – Domneşte tu peste noi fiindcă tu ne-ai eliberat din mâna midianiţilor! Domneşte tu, fiul tău şi nepotul tău!

23 A nd Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you.

Ghedeon le-a răspuns: – Nu eu voi domni peste voi şi nici urmaşul meu nu va domni peste voi, ci Domnul va domni peste voi!

24 A nd Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

Ghedeon le-a mai zis: – Doresc însă să vă cer ceva: daţi-mi fiecare câte un cercel din prada voastră! Duşmanii lor purtaseră cercei de aur, pentru că fuseseră ismaeliţi.

25 A nd they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.

– Ţi-i vom da! i-au răspuns ei. Apoi au aşternut o învelitoare şi fiecare om a aruncat pe ea cerceii luaţi ca pradă.

26 A nd the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels’ necks.

Greutatea cerceilor de aur pe care i-a cerut a ajuns la o mie şapte sute de şecheli de aur, în afară de lunişoare, ornamente şi hainele de purpură pe care le purtau regii Midianului şi în afară de lănţişoarele de la gâtul cămilelor lor.

27 A nd Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

Ghedeon a făcut din ei un efod pe care l-a pus în cetatea sa, la Ofra. Tot Israelul s-a prostituat închinându-se la el acolo; el a devenit o capcană pentru Ghedeon şi familia lui.

28 T hus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

Astfel, midianiţii au fost smeriţi înaintea israeliţilor şi n-au mai îndrăznit să-şi ridice capetele. Pe vremea lui Ghedeon, în ţară a fost pace timp de patruzeci de ani.

29 A nd Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.

Apoi Ierub-Baal, fiul lui Ioaş, s-a retras şi a locuit în casa lui.

30 A nd Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.

Ghedeon a avut şaptezeci de fii, pentru că a avut multe soţii.

31 A nd his concubine that was in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.

Ţiitoarea lui din Şehem i-a născut şi ea un fiu, căruia i-a pus numele Abimelek.

32 A nd Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.

Ghedeon, fiul lui Ioaş, a murit după o bătrâneţe fericită şi a fost înmormântat în mormântul tatălui său, Ioaş, la Ofra, pe proprietatea familiei Abiezer.

33 A nd it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god.

După ce a murit Ghedeon, israeliţii s-au întors la păcatele dinainte, prostituându-se înaintea baalilor. Ei l-au înălţat pe Baal-Berit ca dumnezeu al lor.

34 A nd the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:

Astfel, israeliţii nu şi-au amintit de Domnul, Dumnezeul lor, Care îi eliberase din mâna tuturor duşmanilor dimprejur

35 n either shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.

şi nici n-au fost loiali familiei lui Ierub-Baal, adică Ghedeon, în ciuda binelui pe care el îl făcuse lui Israel.
