1 A nd when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus’ band.

Când s-a hotărât să plecăm pe mare spre Italia, l-au predat atât pe Pavel, cât şi pe alţi prizonieri unui centurion pe nume Iulius, centurion al regimentului imperial.

2 A nd entering into a ship of Adramyttium, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.

Ne-am îmbarcat pe o corabie din Adramita, care urma să plece spre locurile de prin Asia. Cu noi era şi Aristarh, un macedonean din Tesalonic.

3 A nd the next day we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.

În ziua următoare am debarcat în Sidon. Iulius s-a purtat omenos cu Pavel şi i-a dat voie să meargă pe la prietenii săi, ca să primească îngrijire.

4 A nd when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

Apoi am plecat de acolo şi am navigat la adăpostul insulei Cipru, din cauză că vânturile erau potrivnice.

5 A nd when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.

Am navigat pe marea deschisă – pe lângă Cilicia şi Pamfilia – şi am ajuns la Mira, în Licia.

6 A nd there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein.

Acolo, centurionul a găsit o corabie din Alexandria, care pleca în Italia, şi ne-a îmbarcat pe ea.

7 A nd when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce were come over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, over against Salmone;

Timp de mai multe zile am navigat încet şi cu greutate. Am ajuns lângă Cnidus şi, pentru că vântul nu ne-a lăsat să mergem acolo, am navigat la adăpostul Cretei, trecând pe lângă Salmon.

8 a nd, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea.

După ce am trecut de el cu greu, am ajuns la un loc numit „Limanuri bune“, care era aproape de cetatea Lasea.

9 N ow when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,

Trecuse mult timp şi călătoria se făcea de acum periculoasă, pentru că trecuse chiar şi perioada postului. Prin urmare, Pavel i-a sfătuit

10 a nd said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.

astfel: „Oamenilor, văd că această călătorie este pe cale să se facă cu mare pagubă şi cu mare pierdere nu numai pentru încărcătură şi corabie, ci şi pentru vieţile noastre!“

11 N evertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.

Dar centurionul era mai convins de spusele căpitanului şi ale proprietarului corăbiei decât de spusele lui Pavel.

12 A nd because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west.

Întrucât portul era nepotrivit pentru a petrece iarna acolo, cei mai mulţi au fost de părere să plece de acolo pe mare şi să încerce să ajungă la Fenix, un port din Creta, îndreptat spre sud-vest şi nord-vest, ca să ierneze acolo. Furtună pe mare

13 A nd when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete.

Vântul de sud sufla uşor, astfel încât, crezând că-şi pot atinge scopul, au pornit de-a lungul coastei Cretei, cât se putea de aproape.

14 B ut not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon.

Curând însă a început să sufle dinspre insulă un vânt năprasnic numit Euraquilo.

15 A nd when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.

Corabia a fost luată de vânt, fără să se poată împotrivi lui, şi astfel ne-am lăsat duşi de el.

16 A nd running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:

Am navigat la adăpostul unei insule mici, numite Cauda, şi cu greu am putut să aducem sub control barca de salvare a corăbiei.

17 w hich when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven.

Au ridicat-o la bord şi apoi s-au folosit de nişte frânghii ca să cuprindă corabia de jur împrejur. De teamă să nu eşueze în bancurile de nisip ale Sirtei, au lăsat jos ancora de furtună şi s-au lăsat duşi de vânt.

18 A nd we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship;

Fiindcă eram prinşi într-o furtună foarte puternică, în ziua următoare au început să arunce încărcătura corăbiei,

19 a nd the third day we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship.

iar a treia zi au aruncat cu mâinile lor peste bord şi echipamentul corăbiei.

20 A nd when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.

Timp de mai multe zile nu s-au văzut nici soarele, nici stelele, iar furtuna n-a slăbit deloc. Într-un final ni se dusese orice speranţă că vom fi salvaţi.

21 B ut after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.

După ce a trecut mult timp în care ei nu mai mâncaseră, Pavel s-a ridicat în mijlocul lor şi a zis: „Oamenilor, trebuia să mă ascultaţi şi să nu fi plecat din Creta, ca să fi scăpat de această pagubă şi de această pierdere.

22 A nd now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship.

Acum însă vă sfătuiesc să prindeţi curaj, pentru că nici unul dintre voi nu-şi va pierde viaţa, ci se va pierde doar corabia.

23 F or there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,

Căci noaptea trecută a stat lângă mine un înger al Dumnezeului Căruia Îi aparţin şi Căruia mă închin

24 s aying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Cæsar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.

şi mi-a zis: «Nu te teme, Pavel! Tu trebuie să stai înaintea Cezarului şi iată că Dumnezeu ţi i-a dăruit pe toţi cei ce navighează împreună cu tine!»

25 W herefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.

De aceea, prindeţi curaj, oamenilor, pentru că eu am credinţă în Dumnezeu că va fi aşa cum mi s-a spus!

26 H owbeit we must be cast upon a certain island.

Acum însă trebuie să naufragiem pe o insulă oarecare.“

27 B ut when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the shipmen deemed that they drew near to some country;

Cam în a paisprezecea noapte de când eram purtaţi pe Marea Adriatică, pe la miezul nopţii, marinarii au început să bănuiască că se apropie de uscat.

28 a nd sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms.

Au măsurat adâncimea apei şi au găsit-o de douăzeci de stânjeni. Au înaintat încă puţin, au măsurat din nou adâncimea apei şi au găsit-o de cincisprezece stânjeni.

29 T hen fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.

De teamă că vom naufragia undeva în locurile stâncoase, au aruncat patru ancore de la pupă şi aşteptau cu nerăbdare să se facă ziuă.

30 A nd as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship,

Dar fiindcă marinarii încercau să fugă de pe corabie şi lăsaseră jos în mare barca de salvare, sub pretextul că urmează să coboare nişte ancore de la proră,

31 P aul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.

Pavel le-a zis centurionului şi soldaţilor: „Dacă aceştia nu rămân în corabie, voi nu puteţi fi salvaţi!“

32 T hen the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.

Atunci soldaţii au tăiat frânghiile bărcii de salvare şi au lăsat-o să se ducă.

33 A nd while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take meat, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing.

Chiar înainte de a se face ziuă, Pavel i-a îndemnat pe toţi să mănânce, spunând: „Astăzi sunt paisprezece zile de când staţi în aşteptare şi, în tot acest timp aţi rămas flămânzi şi n-aţi mâncat nimic.

34 W herefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.

De aceea vă îndemn să mâncaţi ceva, fiindcă lucrul acesta este pentru propria voastră salvare; căci nici un fir de păr din capul vostru nu se va pierde!“

35 A nd when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.

Şi spunând acestea, a luat pâine, I-a mulţumit lui Dumnezeu înaintea tuturor, a frânt-o şi a început să mănânce.

36 T hen were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat.

Toţi au prins curaj şi au mâncat şi ei câte ceva.

37 A nd we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.

În corabie eram, în total, două sute şaptezeci şi şase de suflete.

38 A nd when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea.

După ce şi-au potolit foamea, au uşurat corabia, aruncând grâul în mare. Naufragiul

39 A nd when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship.

Când s-a făcut zi, n-au recunoscut ţărmul, dar au observat un golf care avea plajă şi s-au hotărât ca, dacă vor putea, să ducă corabia să eşueze acolo.

40 A nd when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoised up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore.

Au tăiat legăturile ancorelor şi le-au lăsat în mare, dezlegând în acelaşi timp frânghiile care ţineau cârmele; apoi au ridicat în vânt vela cea mică şi s-au îndreptat spre plajă.

41 A nd falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.

S-au lovit însă de un banc de nisip şi corabia a eşuat; prora s-a înfipt în nisip, rămânând împotmolită, în timp ce pupa era ruptă în bucăţi de izbitura valurilor.

42 A nd the soldiers’ counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape.

Planul soldaţilor era să-i omoare pe prizonieri, ca nu cumva vreunul să scape înotând.

43 B ut the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:

Dar centurionul, vrând să-l salveze pe Pavel, i-a împiedicat să-şi îndeplinească planul. El le-a poruncit celor ce ştiau să înoate să sară primii peste bord şi să ajungă la ţărm,

44 a nd the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.

iar ceilalţi să-i urmeze ţinându-se de scânduri sau de bucăţi din corabie. Şi aşa s-a făcut că au ajuns cu toţii în siguranţă la ţărm.
