1 A nd the Ziphites came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon?

Zifiţii au venit la Saul, la Ghiva şi i-au spus: – David se ascunde pe dealul Hachila, la sud de Ieşimon.

2 T hen Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

Saul s-a ridicat şi s-a dus în pustia Zif împreună cu trei mii de bărbaţi aleşi ai lui Israel, ca să-l caute acolo pe David.

3 A nd Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon, by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.

Şi-a aşezat tabăra lângă drum, pe dealul Hachila, care se află la sud de Ieşimon. David era în pustie. Când a văzut că Saul a venit după el în pustie,

4 D avid therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul was come in very deed.

David a trimis iscoade şi a aflat că într-adevăr Saul venise.

5 A nd David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the trench, and the people pitched round about him.

Atunci David s-a ridicat şi a venit la locul în care îşi aşezase Saul tabăra. David a văzut astfel locul în care era culcat Saul şi Abner, fiul lui Ner, conducătorul oştirii lui Saul. Saul era culcat înăuntrul taberei, iar oştirea era aşezată în jurul său.

6 T hen answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with thee.

Atunci David i-a întrebat pe hititul Ahimelek şi pe Abişai, fiul Ţeruiei, fratele lui Ioab: – Cine va coborî împreună cu mine în tabăra lui Saul? – Eu voi coborî cu tine, i-a răspuns Abişai.

7 S o David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the people lay round about him.

Astfel, David şi Abişai au plecat noaptea spre tabără. Saul dormea înăuntrul taberei, cu suliţa înfiptă în pământ, la capul său. Abner şi oştirea erau culcaţi în jurul lui.

8 T hen said Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the second time.

Abişai i-a zis lui David: – Dumnezeu l-a dat astăzi pe duşmanul tău în mâna ta. Lasă-mă, te rog, să-l ţintuiesc cu suliţa de pământ, cu o singură lovitură, fără să mai fie nevoie de a doua.

9 A nd David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the Lord’s anointed, and be guiltless?

David însă i-a zis lui Abişai: – Nu-l ucide! Căci, cine ar putea să se atingă de unsul Domnului şi să fie fără vină?

10 D avid said furthermore, As the Lord liveth, the Lord shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish.

Apoi a adăugat: – Viu este Domnul, că Domnul îl va lovi. Fie îi va sosi timpul şi va muri, fie va intra în luptă şi va pieri.

11 T he Lord forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the Lord’s anointed: but, I pray thee, take thou now the spear that is at his bolster, and the cruse of water, and let us go.

Să mă ferească Domnul să mă ating de unsul Său. Acum însă ia suliţa care se află la capul lui şi urciorul cu apă şi să plecăm.

12 S o David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul’s bolster; and they gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awaked: for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from the Lord was fallen upon them.

David a luat suliţa şi urciorul cu apă de la capul lui Saul şi au plecat. Nimeni n-a văzut şi n-a ştiut nimic şi nimeni nu s-a trezit pentru că toţi dormeau, căci un somn adânc de la Domnul căzuse peste ei.

13 T hen David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of an hill afar off; a great space being between them:

David a trecut pe partea cealaltă şi a stat pe vârful dealului, la distanţă; între ei se afla o suprafaţă mare.

14 a nd David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, Answerest thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered and said, Who art thou that criest to the king?

Apoi David a strigat către popor şi l-a chemat pe Abner, fiul lui Ner, zicând: – Abner, nu răspunzi? Abner a răspuns: – Cine-l strigă pe rege?

15 A nd David said to Abner, Art not thou a valiant man? and who is like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to destroy the king thy lord.

– Ce bărbat eşti tu? i-a zis David lui Abner. Cine este ca tine în Israel? De ce nu ai vegheat asupra stăpânului tău, regele, pentru că cineva din popor a venit ca să-l ucidă?

16 T his thing is not good that thou hast done. As the Lord liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the Lord’s anointed. And now see where the king’s spear is, and the cruse of water that was at his bolster.

Nu este bine ceea ce ai făcut. Viu este Domnul că meritaţi moartea, voi, cei care nu aţi vegheat asupra stăpânului vostru, asupra unsului Domnului. Vezi acum unde este suliţa regelui şi urciorul cu apă, care se afla lângă capul lui?

17 A nd Saul knew David’s voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, O king.

Saul a recunoscut vocea lui David şi a zis: – Tu eşti fiul meu David? David a răspuns: – Da, rege, stăpânul meu, eu sunt.

18 A nd he said, Wherefore doth my lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in mine hand?

Apoi a continuat: De ce îl urmăreşte stăpânul meu pe slujitorul său? Ce am făcut rău, de ce rău mă fac vinovat?

19 N ow therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the Lord have stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before the Lord; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the Lord, saying, Go, serve other gods.

Acum, să asculte stăpânul meu, regele, cuvintele slujitorului său: dacă Domnul este Cel Care te întărâtă împotriva mea, atunci să primească o jertfă; însă dacă sunt oamenii, atunci să fie blestemaţi înaintea Domnului, căci ei mă izgonesc astăzi pentru a nu mai avea parte în moştenirea Domnului, zicând: „Du-te, slujeşte altor dumnezei!“

20 N ow therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the Lord: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains.

Acum, să nu-mi cadă sângele la pământ departe de faţa Domnului, căci regele a ieşit în căutarea unui singur purice, ca unul care urmăreşte o potârniche în munţi.

21 T hen said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.

– Am păcătuit! a zis Saul. Întoarce-te, fiul meu David, pentru că nu-ţi voi mai face rău; înţeleg că ai pus preţ pe viaţa mea în ziua aceasta. M-am purtat ca un nebun şi am greşit foarte mult.

22 A nd David answered and said, Behold the king’s spear! and let one of the young men come over and fetch it.

David a răspuns: – Aici este suliţa regelui. Să vină unul dintre tineri şi s-o ia.

23 T he Lord render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness: for the Lord delivered thee into my hand to day, but I would not stretch forth mine hand against the Lord’s anointed.

Domnul răsplăteşte fiecăruia după dreptatea şi credincioşia lui. El te-a dat astăzi în mâna mea, însă eu n-am vrut să mă ating de unsul Domnului.

24 A nd, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the Lord, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation.

Fie ca, după cum eu am preţuit astăzi viaţa ta, tot aşa să preţuiască şi Domnul viaţa mea şi El să mă izbăvească din toate necazurile.

25 T hen Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.

– Fii binecuvântat, fiul meu David, i-a zis Saul. Cu siguranţă, vei face lucruri mari şi vei avea izbândă. Apoi David a plecat pe drumul său, iar Saul s-a întors acasă.
