1 N ow when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?

Viendo Jacob que en Egipto había alimentos, dijo a sus hijos: «¿Por qué os estáis ahí mirando?

2 A nd he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.

Yo he oído que hay víveres en Egipto; descended allá y comprad de allí para nosotros, para que podamos vivir y no muramos.»

3 A nd Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt.

Descendieron los diez hermanos de José a comprar trigo en Egipto.

4 B ut Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him.

Pero Jacob no envió a Benjamín, hermano de José, con sus hermanos, porque dijo: «No sea que le acontezca algún desastre.»

5 A nd the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

Fueron, pues, los hijos de Israel entre los que iban a comprar, porque había hambre en la tierra de Canaán.

6 A nd Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.

José era el señor de la tierra, quien le vendía trigo a todo el mundo. Cuando llegaron los hermanos de José, se inclinaron a él rostro en tierra.

7 A nd Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

José reconoció a sus hermanos en cuanto los vio; pero hizo como que no los conocía, y hablándoles ásperamente les dijo: —¿De dónde habéis venido? Ellos respondieron: —De la tierra de Canaán, para comprar alimentos.

8 A nd Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.

Reconoció, pues, José a sus hermanos, pero ellos no lo reconocieron.

9 A nd Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

Entonces se acordó José de los sueños que había tenido acerca de ellos, y les dijo: —Espías sois; para ver las regiones indefensas del país habéis venido.

10 A nd they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.

—No, señor nuestro —respondieron ellos—, sino que tus siervos han venido a comprar alimentos.

11 W e are all one man's sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies.

Todos nosotros somos hijos del mismo padre y somos hombres honrados; tus siervos nunca fueron espías.

12 A nd he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

Pero José les dijo: —No; para ver las regiones indefensas del país habéis venido.

13 A nd they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.

—Tus siervos somos doce hermanos —respondieron ellos—, hijos de un hombre en la tierra de Canaán. El menor está hoy con nuestro padre y el otro ha desaparecido.

14 A nd Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies:

Y José les dijo: —Eso es lo que os he dicho al afirmar que sois espías.

15 H ereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.

En esto seréis probados: ¡Por vida del faraón, que no saldréis de aquí hasta que vuestro hermano menor venga!

16 S end one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies.

Enviad a uno de vosotros para que traiga a vuestro hermano, y vosotros quedad presos. Vuestras palabras serán probadas, si hay verdad en vosotros; y si no, ¡por la vida del faraón, que sois espías!

17 A nd he put them all together into ward three days.

Entonces los puso juntos en la cárcel por tres días.

18 A nd Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God:

Al tercer día les dijo José: —Haced esto y vivid: Yo temo a Dios.

19 I f ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses:

Si sois hombres honrados, uno de vuestros hermanos se quedará en la cárcel, mientras los demás vais a llevar el alimento para remediar el hambre de vuestra familia.

20 B ut bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.

Pero traeréis a vuestro hermano menor; así serán verificadas vuestras palabras y no moriréis. Ellos lo hicieron así,

21 A nd they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

pero se decían el uno al otro: —Verdaderamente hemos pecado contra nuestro hermano, pues vimos la angustia de su alma cuando nos rogaba y no lo escuchamos; por eso ha venido sobre nosotros esta angustia.

22 A nd Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.

Entonces Rubén les respondió, diciendo: —¿No os hablé yo y dije: “No pequéis contra el joven”? Pero no me escuchasteis; por eso ahora se nos demanda su sangre.

23 A nd they knew not that Joseph understood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter.

Ellos no sabían que José los entendía, porque éste tenía un intérprete para hablar con ellos.

24 A nd he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes.

Entonces se apartó José de su lado, y lloró; cuando volvió a ellos, les habló y, tomando de entre ellos a Simeón, lo apresó en su presencia.

25 T hen Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he unto them.

Después mandó José que llenaran sus sacos de trigo y devolvieran el dinero a cada uno de ellos, poniéndolo en su saco, y que les dieran comida para el camino; así se hizo con ellos.

26 A nd they laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence.

Entonces pusieron ellos su trigo sobre sus asnos y se fueron de allí.

27 A nd as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack's mouth.

Pero al abrir uno de ellos el saco para dar de comer a su asno en el mesón, vio el dinero que estaba en la boca de su costal.

28 A nd he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us?

Y dijo a sus hermanos: —¡Me han devuelto mi dinero; aquí está, en mi saco! Entonces se les sobresaltó el corazón, y espantados se dijeron el uno al otro: —¿Qué es esto que Dios nos ha hecho?

29 A nd they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that befell unto them; saying,

Cuando llegaron junto a Jacob, su padre, en tierra de Canaán, le contaron todo lo que les había acontecido, diciendo:

30 T he man, who is the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country.

—Aquel hombre, el señor de la tierra, nos habló ásperamente y nos trató como a espías de la tierra.

31 A nd we said unto him, We are true men; we are no spies:

Pero nosotros le dijimos: “Somos hombres honrados, nunca fuimos espías.

32 W e be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.

Somos doce hermanos, hijos de nuestro padre; uno ha desaparecido y el menor está hoy con nuestro padre en la tierra de Canaán.”

33 A nd the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone:

Entonces aquel hombre, el señor de la tierra, nos dijo: “En esto conoceré que sois hombres honrados: dejad conmigo a uno de vuestros hermanos, tomad para remediar el hambre de vuestras familias y andad,

34 A nd bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffick in the land.

traedme a vuestro hermano menor; así sabré que no sois espías, sino hombres honrados; entonces os entregaré a vuestro hermano y comerciaréis libremente por el país.”

35 A nd it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack: and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.

Aconteció que cuando vaciaban ellos sus sacos, vieron que en el saco de cada uno estaba la bolsita con su dinero; y tanto ellos como su padre, al ver las bolsitas con el dinero, tuvieron temor.

36 A nd Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me.

Entonces su padre Jacob les dijo: —Me habéis privado de mis hijos: José no aparece, Simeón tampoco y ahora os llevaréis a Benjamín. Estas cosas acabarán conmigo.

37 A nd Reuben spake unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.

Rubén respondió a su padre: —Quítales la vida a mis dos hijos, si no te lo devuelvo. Confíamelo a mí y yo te lo devolveré.

38 A nd he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

Pero Jacob replicó: —No descenderá mi hijo con vosotros, pues su hermano ha muerto y él ha quedado solo; si le acontece algún desastre en el camino por donde vais, haréis descender mis canas con dolor al seol.
