1 ¿ Conoces tú el tiempo en que paren las cabras monteses ? ¿Has observado el parto de las ciervas ?

Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? Or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve?

2 ¿ Puedes contar los meses de su gestación, o conoces el tiempo en que han de parir?

Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? Or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?

3 S e encorvan, paren sus crías, y se libran de sus dolores de parto.

They bow themselves, they bring forth their young, They cast out their pains.

4 S us crías se fortalecen, crecen en campo abierto; se van y no vuelven a ellas.

Their young ones become strong, they grow up in the open field; They go forth, and return not again.

5 ¿ Quién dejó en libertad al asno montés ? ¿Y quién soltó las ataduras del asno veloz,

Who hath sent out the wild ass free? Or who hath loosed the bonds of the swift ass,

6 a l cual di por hogar el desierto, y por morada la tierra salada ?

Whose home I have made the wilderness, And the salt land his dwelling-place?

7 S e burla del tumulto de la ciudad, no escucha los gritos del arriero.

He scorneth the tumult of the city, Neither heareth he the shoutings of the driver.

8 E xplora los montes buscando su pasto, y anda tras toda hierba verde.

The range of the mountains is his pasture, And he searcheth after every green thing.

9 ¿ Consentirá en servirte el búfalo, o pasará la noche en tu pesebre?

Will the wild-ox be content to serve thee? Or will he abide by thy crib?

10 ¿ Puedes atar al búfalo con coyundas para el surco, o rastrillará los valles en pos de ti?

Canst thou bind the wild-ox with his band in the furrow? Or will he harrow the valleys after thee?

11 ¿ Confiarás en él por ser grande su fuerza y le confiarás tu labor?

Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? Or wilt thou leave to him thy labor?

12 ¿ Tendrás fe en él de que te devolverá tu grano, y de que lo recogerá de tu era?

Wilt thou confide in him, that he will bring home thy seed, And gather the grain of thy threshing-floor?

13 B aten alegres las alas del avestruz, ¿acaso con el ala y plumaje del amor ?

The wings of the ostrich wave proudly; But are they the pinions and plumage of love?

14 P orque abandona sus huevos en la tierra, y sobre el polvo los calienta;

For she leaveth her eggs on the earth, And warmeth them in the dust,

15 s e olvida de que algún pie los puede aplastar, o una bestia salvaje los puede pisotear.

And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, Or that the wild beast may trample them.

16 T rata a sus hijos con crueldad, como si no fueran suyos; aunque su trabajo sea en vano, le es indiferente;

She dealeth hardly with her young ones, as if they were not hers: Though her labor be in vain, she is without fear;

17 p orque Dios le ha hecho olvidar la sabiduría, y no le ha dado su porción de inteligencia.

Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, Neither hath he imparted to her understanding.

18 P ero cuando se levanta en alto, se burla del caballo y de su jinete.

What time she lifteth up herself on high, She scorneth the horse and his rider.

19 ¿ Das tú al caballo su fuerza? ¿Revistes su cuello de crines?

Hast thou given the horse his might? Hast thou clothed his neck with the quivering mane?

20 ¿ Le haces saltar como la langosta? Terrible es su formidable resoplido;

Hast thou made him to leap as a locust? The glory of his snorting is terrible.

21 e scarba en el valle, y se regocija en su fuerza; sale al encuentro de las armas.

He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: He goeth out to meet the armed men.

22 S e burla del temor y no se acobarda, ni retrocede ante la espada.

He mocketh at fear, and is not dismayed; Neither turneth he back from the sword.

23 R esuena contra él la aljaba, la lanza reluciente y la jabalina.

The quiver rattleth against him, The flashing spear and the javelin.

24 C on ímpetu y furor corre sobre la tierra; y no se está quieto al sonido de la trompeta.

He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage; Neither believeth he that it is the voice of the trumpet.

25 C ada vez que la trompeta suena, como que dice: “¡Ea!”, y desde lejos olfatea la batalla, las voces atronadoras de los capitanes y el grito de guerra.

As oft as the trumpet soundeth he saith, Aha! And he smelleth the battle afar off, The thunder of the captains, and the shouting.

26 ¿ Acaso por tu sabiduría se eleva el gavilán, extendiendo sus alas hacia el sur?

Is it by thy wisdom that the hawk soareth, (And) stretcheth her wings toward the south?

27 ¿ Acaso a tu mandato se remonta el águila y hace en las alturas su nido ?

Is it at thy command that the eagle mounteth up, And maketh her nest on high?

28 E n la peña mora y se aloja, sobre la cima del despeñadero, lugar inaccesible.

On the cliff she dwelleth, and maketh her home, Upon the point of the cliff, and the stronghold.

29 D esde allí acecha la presa; desde muy lejos sus ojos la divisan.

From thence she spieth out the prey; Her eyes behold it afar off.

30 S us polluelos chupan la sangre; y donde hay muertos, allí está ella.

Her young ones also suck up blood: And where the slain are, there is she.
