1 W eißt du die Zeit, wann die Gemsen auf den Felsen gebären? oder hast du gemerkt, wann die Hinden schwanger gehen?

Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? Or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve?

2 H ast du gezählt ihre Monden, wann sie voll werden? oder weißt du die Zeit, wann sie gebären?

Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? Or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?

3 S ie beugen sich, lassen los ihre Jungen und werden los ihre Wehen.

They bow themselves, they bring forth their young, They cast out their pains.

4 I hre Jungen werden feist und groß im Freien und gehen aus und kommen nicht wieder zu ihnen.

Their young ones become strong, they grow up in the open field; They go forth, and return not again.

5 W er hat den Wildesel so frei lassen gehen, wer hat die Bande des Flüchtigen gelöst,

Who hath sent out the wild ass free? Or who hath loosed the bonds of the swift ass,

6 d em ich die Einöde zum Hause gegeben habe und die Wüste zur Wohnung?

Whose home I have made the wilderness, And the salt land his dwelling-place?

7 E r verlacht das Getümmel der Stadt; das Pochen des Treibers hört er nicht.

He scorneth the tumult of the city, Neither heareth he the shoutings of the driver.

8 E r schaut nach den Bergen, da seine Weide ist, und sucht, wo es grün ist.

The range of the mountains is his pasture, And he searcheth after every green thing.

9 M einst du das Einhorn werde dir dienen und werde bleiben an deiner Krippe?

Will the wild-ox be content to serve thee? Or will he abide by thy crib?

10 K annst du ihm dein Seil anknüpfen, die Furchen zu machen, daß es hinter dir brache in Tälern?

Canst thou bind the wild-ox with his band in the furrow? Or will he harrow the valleys after thee?

11 M agst du dich auf das Tier verlassen, daß es so stark ist, und wirst es dir lassen arbeiten?

Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? Or wilt thou leave to him thy labor?

12 M agst du ihm trauen, daß es deinen Samen dir wiederbringe und in deine Scheune sammle?

Wilt thou confide in him, that he will bring home thy seed, And gather the grain of thy threshing-floor?

13 D er Fittich des Straußes hebt sich fröhlich. Dem frommen Storch gleicht er an Flügeln und Federn.

The wings of the ostrich wave proudly; But are they the pinions and plumage of love?

14 D och läßt er seine Eier auf der Erde und läßt sie die heiße Erde ausbrüten.

For she leaveth her eggs on the earth, And warmeth them in the dust,

15 E r vergißt, daß sie möchten zertreten werden und ein wildes Tier sie zerbreche.

And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, Or that the wild beast may trample them.

16 E r wird so hart gegen seine Jungen, als wären sie nicht sein, achtet's nicht, daß er umsonst arbeitet.

She dealeth hardly with her young ones, as if they were not hers: Though her labor be in vain, she is without fear;

17 D enn Gott hat ihm die Weisheit genommen und hat ihm keinen Verstand zugeteilt.

Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, Neither hath he imparted to her understanding.

18 Z u der Zeit, da er hoch auffährt, verlacht er beide, Roß und Mann.

What time she lifteth up herself on high, She scorneth the horse and his rider.

19 K annst du dem Roß Kräfte geben oder seinen Hals zieren mit seiner Mähne?

Hast thou given the horse his might? Hast thou clothed his neck with the quivering mane?

20 L äßt du es aufspringen wie die Heuschrecken? Schrecklich ist sein prächtiges Schnauben.

Hast thou made him to leap as a locust? The glory of his snorting is terrible.

21 E s stampft auf den Boden und ist freudig mit Kraft und zieht aus, den Geharnischten entgegen.

He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: He goeth out to meet the armed men.

22 E s spottet der Furcht und erschrickt nicht und flieht vor dem Schwert nicht,

He mocketh at fear, and is not dismayed; Neither turneth he back from the sword.

23 w enngleich über ihm klingt der Köcher und glänzen beide, Spieß und Lanze.

The quiver rattleth against him, The flashing spear and the javelin.

24 E s zittert und tobt und scharrt in die Erde und läßt sich nicht halten bei der Drommete Hall.

He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage; Neither believeth he that it is the voice of the trumpet.

25 S o oft die Drommete klingt, spricht es: Hui! und wittert den Streit von ferne, das Schreien der Fürsten und Jauchzen.

As oft as the trumpet soundeth he saith, Aha! And he smelleth the battle afar off, The thunder of the captains, and the shouting.

26 F liegt der Habicht durch deinen Verstand und breitet seine Flügel gegen Mittag?

Is it by thy wisdom that the hawk soareth, (And) stretcheth her wings toward the south?

27 F liegt der Adler auf deinen Befehl so hoch, daß er sein Nest in der Höhe macht?

Is it at thy command that the eagle mounteth up, And maketh her nest on high?

28 I n den Felsen wohnt er und bleibt auf den Zacken der Felsen und auf Berghöhen.

On the cliff she dwelleth, and maketh her home, Upon the point of the cliff, and the stronghold.

29 V on dort schaut er nach der Speise, und seine Augen sehen ferne.

From thence she spieth out the prey; Her eyes behold it afar off.

30 S eine Jungen saufen Blut, und wo Erschlagene liegen, da ist er.

Her young ones also suck up blood: And where the slain are, there is she.
