1 U nd Hiob hob abermals an seine Sprüche und sprach:

And Job again took up his parable, and said,

2 O daß ich wäre wie in den vorigen Monden, in den Tagen, da mich Gott behütete;

Oh that I were as in the months of old, As in the days when God watched over me;

3 d a seine Leuchte über meinem Haupt schien und ich bei seinem Licht in der Finsternis ging;

When his lamp shined upon my head, And by his light I walked through darkness;

4 w ie war ich in der Reife meines Lebens, da Gottes Geheimnis über meiner Hütte war;

As I was in the ripeness of my days, When the friendship of God was upon my tent;

5 d a der Allmächtige noch mit mir war und meine Kinder um mich her;

When the Almighty was yet with me, And my children were about me;

6 d a ich meine Tritte wusch in Butter und die Felsen mir Ölbäche gossen;

When my steps were washed with butter, And the rock poured me out streams of oil!

7 d a ich ausging zum Tor in der Stadt und mir ließ meinen Stuhl auf der Gasse bereiten;

When I went forth to the gate unto the city, When I prepared my seat in the street,

8 d a mich die Jungen sahen und sich versteckten, und die Alten vor mir aufstanden;

The young men saw me and hid themselves, And the aged rose up and stood;

9 d a die Obersten aufhörten zu reden und legten ihre Hand auf ihren Mund;

The princes refrained from talking, And laid their hand on their mouth;

10 d a die Stimme der Fürsten sich verkroch und ihre Zunge am Gaumen klebte!

The voice of the nobles was hushed, And their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.

11 D enn wessen Ohr mich hörte, der pries mich selig; und wessen Auge mich sah, der rühmte mich.

For when the ear heard me, then it blessed me; And when the eye saw me, it gave witness unto me:

12 D enn ich errettete den Armen, der da schrie, und den Waisen, der keinen Helfer hatte.

Because I delivered the poor that cried, The fatherless also, that had none to help him.

13 D er Segen des, der verderben sollte, kam über mich; und ich erfreute das Herz der Witwe.

The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; And I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

14 G erechtigkeit war mein Kleid, das ich anzog wie einen Rock; und mein Recht war mein fürstlicher Hut.

I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: My justice was as a robe and a diadem.

15 I ch war des Blinden Auge und des Lahmen Fuß.

I was eyes to the blind, And feet was I to the lame.

16 I ch war ein Vater der Armen; und die Sache des, den ich nicht kannte, die erforschte ich.

I was a father to the needy: And the cause of him that I knew not I searched out.

17 I ch zerbrach die Backenzähne des Ungerechten und riß den Raub aus seinen Zähnen.

And I brake the jaws of the unrighteous, And plucked the prey out of his teeth.

18 I ch gedachte: "Ich will in meinem Nest ersterben und meiner Tage viel machen wie Sand."

Then I said, I shall die in my nest, And I shall multiply my days as the sand:

19 M eine Wurzel war aufgetan dem Wasser, und der Tau blieb über meinen Zweigen.

My root is spread out to the waters, And the dew lieth all night upon my branch;

20 M eine Herrlichkeit erneute sich immer an mir, und mein Bogen ward immer stärker in meiner Hand.

My glory is fresh in me, And my bow is renewed in my hand.

21 S ie hörten mir zu und schwiegen und warteten auf meinen Rat.

Unto me men gave ear, and waited, And kept silence for my counsel.

22 N ach meinen Worten redete niemand mehr, und meine Rede troff auf sie.

After my words they spake not again; And my speech distilled upon them.

23 S ie warteten auf mich wie auf den Regen und sperrten ihren Mund auf als nach dem Spätregen.

And they waited for me as for the rain; And they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.

24 W enn ich mit ihnen lachte, wurden sie nicht zu kühn darauf; und das Licht meines Angesichts machte mich nicht geringer.

I smiled on them, when they had no confidence; And the light of my countenance they cast not down.

25 W enn ich zu ihrem Geschäft wollte kommen, so mußte ich obenan sitzen und wohnte wie ein König unter Kriegsknechten, da ich tröstete, die Leid trugen.

I chose out their way, and sat as chief, And dwelt as a king in the army, As one that comforteth the mourners.
