1 T he proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

Приповісті Соломона, сина Давидового, царя Ізраїлевого,

2 T o know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

щоб пізнати премудрість і карність, щоб зрозуміти розсудні слова,

3 T o receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

щоб прийняти напоумлення мудрости, праведности, і права й простоти,

4 T o give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

щоб мудрости дати простодушним, юнакові пізнання й розважність.

5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

Хай послухає мудрий і примножить науку, а розумний здобуде хай мудрих думок,

6 T o understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

щоб пізнати ту приповість та загадкове говорення, слова мудреців та їхні загадки.

7 T he fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Страх Господній початок премудрости, нерозумні погорджують мудрістю та напучуванням.

8 M y son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

Послухай, мій сину, напучення батька свого, і не відкидай науки матері своєї,

9 F or they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

вони бо хороший вінок для твоєї голови, і прикраса на шию твою.

10 M y son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

Мій сину, як грішники будуть тебе намовляти, то з ними не згоджуйся ти!

11 I f they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:

Якщо скажуть вони: Ходи з нами, чатуймо на кров, безпричинно засядьмо на неповинного,

12 L et us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:

живих поковтаймо ми їх, як шеол, та здорових, як тих, які сходять до гробу!

13 W e shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:

Ми знайдемо всіляке багатство цінне, переповнимо здобиччю наші хати.

14 C ast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:

Жеребок свій ти кинеш із нами, буде саква одна для всіх нас,

15 M y son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:

сину мій, не ходи ти дорогою з ними, спини ногу свою від їхньої стежки,

16 F or their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.

бо біжать їхні ноги на зло, і поспішають, щоб кров проливати!

17 S urely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.

Бож надармо поставлена сітка на очах усього крилатого:

18 A nd they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.

то вони на кров власну чатують, засідають на душу свою!

19 S o are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

Такі то дороги усіх, хто заздрий чужого добра: воно бере душу свого власника!

20 W isdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:

Кличе мудрість на вулиці, на площах свій голос дає,

21 S he crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,

на шумливих місцях проповідує, у місті при входах до брам вона каже слова свої:

22 H ow long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

Доки ви, нерозумні, глупоту любитимете? Аж доки насмішники будуть кохатись собі в глузуванні, а безглузді ненавидіти будуть знання?

23 T urn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

Зверніться но ви до картання мого, ось я виллю вам духа свого, сповіщу вам слова свої!

24 B ecause I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;

Бо кликала я, та відмовились ви, простягла була руку свою, та ніхто не прислухувався!

25 B ut ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:

І всю раду мою ви відкинули, картання ж мого не схотіли!

26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

Тож у вашім нещасті сміятися буду і я, насміхатися буду, як прийде ваш страх.

27 W hen your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

Коли прийде ваш страх, немов вихор, і привалиться ваше нещастя, мов буря, як прийде недоля та утиск на вас,

28 T hen shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

тоді кликати будуть мене, але не відповім, будуть шукати мене, та не знайдуть мене,

29 F or that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord:

за те, що науку зненавиділи, і не вибрали страху Господнього,

30 T hey would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

не хотіли поради моєї, погорджували всіма моїми докорами!

31 T herefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

І тому хай їдять вони з плоду дороги своєї, а з порад своїх хай насищаються,

32 F or the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

бо відступство безумних заб'є їх, і безпечність безтямних їх вигубить!

33 B ut whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

А хто мене слухає, той буде жити безпечно, і буде спокійний від страху перед злом!
