1 A nd it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.

А в месец Нисан, в двадесетата година на цар Артаксеркс, като имаше вино пред него, аз взех виното и го дадох на царя. И понеже не бях изглеждал по-рано посърнал пред него,

2 W herefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,

затова царят ми каза: Защо е посърнало лицето ти, като не си болен? Това не е друго освен скръб на сърцето. Тогава се уплаших твърде много.

3 a nd said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?

И казах на царя: Да живее царят довека! Как да не е посърнало лицето ми, когато градът, мястото на гробищата на бащите ми, е запустял и портите му са изгорени с огън.

4 T hen the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.

Тогава царят ме попита: Какво е твоето прошение? И се помолих на небесния Бог;

5 A nd I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers’ sepulchres, that I may build it.

после казах на царя: Ако е угодно на царя и ако слугата ти е придобил твоето благоволение, изпрати ме в Юдея, в града на гробищата на бащите ми, за да го съградя.

6 A nd the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.

Царят пак ми каза (като седеше при него и царицата): Колко време ще продължи пътешествието ти? И кога ще се върнеш? И на царя беше угодно да ме изпрати, като му определих срок.

7 M oreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;

Казах още на царя: Ако е угодно на царя, нека ми бъдат дадени писма до областните управители отвъд реката, за да ме препращат, докато стигна в Юдея,

8 a nd a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.

и писмо до пазителя на царските гори Асаф, за да ми даде дървета да направя греди за вратите на крепостта при дома и за градската стена, и за къщата, в която ще се настаня. И царят ми разреши всичко, понеже добрата ръка на моя Бог беше над мен.

9 T hen I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.

И така, дойдох при областните управители отвъд реката и им дадох царските писма. (А царят беше пратил с мене военачалници и конници.)

10 W hen Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

А когато аронецът Санавалат и слугата Товия, амонецът, чуха това, се оскърбиха твърде много затова, че е дошъл човек да се застъпи за доброто на израелтяните.

11 S o I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.

Така дойдох в Йерусалим и прекарах там три дни.

12 A nd I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.

Тогава станах през нощта, аз и неколцина други с мене, без да кажа на никого какво беше вложил моят Бог в сърцето ми да направя за Йерусалим; и друг добитък нямаше с мен, освен добитъка, на който яздех.

13 A nd I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.

Излязох през нощта през портата на долината и дойдох срещу извора на смока и до портата на бунището, и прегледах йерусалимските стени как бяха съборени и портите им изгорени с огън.

14 T hen I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king’s pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.

После минах към портата на извора и към царския водоем; но нямаше място, откъдето да мине добитъкът, на който яздех.

15 T hen went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.

Тогава излязох през нощта край потока и прегледах стената; после, като се обърнах, влязох през портата на долината и се върнах.

16 A nd the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.

А по-видните мъже не знаеха къде ходих или какво направих; и дотогава не бях казал това нито на юдеите, нито на свещениците, нито на благородните, нито на по-видните мъже, нито на другите, които вършеха работата.

17 T hen said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.

Тогава им казах: Вие виждате бедствието, в което се намираме, как Йерусалим е опустошен и портите му са изгорени с огън; елате да съградим стената на Йерусалим, за да не бъдем вече за укор.

18 T hen I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.

И им разказах как ръката на моя Бог беше добра над мен, още и за думите, които царят ми беше казал. И те отговориха: Да станем и да градим. Така засилиха ръцете си за добрата работа.

19 B ut when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?

А аронецът Санавалат и слугата Товия, амонецът, и арабинът Гисам, когато чуха това, ни се присмяха, презряха ни и казаха: Какво е това, което правите? Искате да се надигнете против царя ли?

20 T hen answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.

А аз им отговорих: Небесният Бог, Той ще ни направи да благоуспяваме; затова ние, служителите Му, ще станем и ще градим. Вие обаче нямате дял, нито право, нито спомен в Йерусалим.
