1 M y soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

2 I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; shew me wherefore thou contendest with me.

Direi a Deus: Não me condenes; revela-me que acusações tens contra mim.

3 I s it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, that thou shouldest despise the work of thine hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

Tens prazer em oprimir-me, em rejeitar a obra de tuas mãos, enquanto sorris para o plano dos ímpios?

4 H ast thou eyes of flesh? or seest thou as man seeth?

Acaso tens olhos de carne? Enxergas como os mortais?

5 A re thy days as the days of man? are thy years as man's days,

Teus dias são como os de qualquer mortal? Os anos de tua vida são como os do homem?

6 T hat thou enquirest after mine iniquity, and searchest after my sin?

Pois investigas a minha iniqüidade e vasculhas o meu pecado,

7 T hou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand.

embora saibas que não sou culpado e que ninguém pode livrar-me das tuas mãos.

8 T hine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.

“Foram as tuas mãos que me formaram e me fizeram. Irás agora voltar-te e destruir-me?

9 R emember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again?

Lembra-te de que me moldaste como o barro; e agora me farás voltar ao pó?

10 H ast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese?

Acaso não me despejaste como leite e não me coalhaste como queijo?

11 T hou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews.

Não me vestiste de pele e carne e não me juntaste com ossos e tendões?

12 T hou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit.

Deste-me vida e foste bondoso para comigo, e na tua providência cuidaste do meu espírito.

13 A nd these things hast thou hid in thine heart: I know that this is with thee.

“Mas algo escondeste em teu coração, e agora sei o que pensavas.

14 I f I sin, then thou markest me, and thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity.

Se eu pecasse, estarias me observando e não deixarias sem punição a minha ofensa.

15 I f I be wicked, woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see thou mine affliction;

Se eu fosse culpado, ai de mim! Mesmo sendo inocente, não posso erguer a cabeça, pois estou dominado pela vergonha e mergulhado na minha aflição.

16 F or it increaseth. Thou huntest me as a fierce lion: and again thou shewest thyself marvellous upon me.

Se mantenho a cabeça erguida, ficas à minha espreita como um leão, e de novo manifestas contra mim o teu poder tremendo.

17 T hou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thine indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.

Trazes novas testemunhas contra mim e contra mim aumentas a tua ira; teus exércitos atacam-me em batalhões sucessivos.

18 W herefore then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the ghost, and no eye had seen me!

“Então, por que me fizeste sair do ventre? Eu preferia ter morrido antes que alguém pudesse ver-me.

19 I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.

Se tão-somente eu jamais tivesse existido, ou fosse levado direto do ventre para a sepultura!

20 A re not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,

Já estariam no fim os meus poucos dias? Afasta-te de mim, para que eu tenha um instante de alegria,

21 B efore I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;

antes que eu vá para o lugar do qual não há retorno, para a terra de sombras e densas trevas,

22 A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

para a terra tenebrosa como a noite, terra de trevas e de caos, onde até mesmo a luz é escuridão”.
