1 T he word that Jeremiah the prophet spake unto Baruch the son of Neriah, when he had written these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying,

No quarto ano do reinado de Jeoaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, depois que Baruque, filho de Nerias, escreveu num rolo as palavras ditadas por Jeremias, este lhe disse:

2 T hus saith the Lord, the God of Israel, unto thee, O Baruch:

“Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, a você, Baruque:

3 T hou didst say, Woe is me now! for the Lord hath added grief to my sorrow; I fainted in my sighing, and I find no rest.

‘Você disse, “Ai de mim! O Senhor acrescentou tristeza ao meu sofrimento. Estou exausto de tanto gemer, e não encontro descanso”’.

4 T hus shalt thou say unto him, The Lord saith thus; Behold, that which I have built will I break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up, even this whole land.

“Mas o Senhor manda-me dizer-lhe: ‘Assim diz o Senhor: Destruirei o que edifiquei e arrancarei o que plantei em toda esta terra.

5 A nd seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not: for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith the Lord: but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest.

E então? Você deveria buscar coisas especiais para você? Não as busque, pois trarei desgraça sobre toda a humanidade’, diz o Senhor, ‘mas eu o deixarei escapar com vida onde quer que você vá’”.
