1 M aintenant donc, Job, écoute mes discours, Prête l'oreille à toutes mes paroles!

Howbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear mine utterances, and hearken to all my words.

2 V oici, j'ouvre la bouche, Ma langue se remue dans mon palais.

Behold now, I have opened my mouth, my tongue speaketh in my palate,

3 C 'est avec droiture de coeur que je vais parler, C'est la vérité pure qu'exprimeront mes lèvres:

My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart, and my lips shall utter knowledge purely.

4 L 'esprit de Dieu m'a créé, Et le souffle du Tout Puissant m'anime.

The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.

5 S i tu le peux, réponds-moi, Défends ta cause, tiens-toi prêt!

If thou canst, answer me; array before me: take thy stand.

6 D evant Dieu je suis ton semblable, J'ai été comme toi formé de la boue;

Behold, before God I am as thou; I also am formed out of the clay.

7 A insi mes terreurs ne te troubleront pas, Et mon poids ne saurait t'accabler.

Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, nor my burden be heavy upon thee.

8 M ais tu as dit à mes oreilles, Et j'ai entendu le son de tes paroles:

Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of words:—

9 J e suis pur, je suis sans péché, Je suis net, il n'y a point en moi d'iniquité.

I am clean without transgression; I am pure, and there is no iniquity in me;

10 E t Dieu trouve contre moi des motifs de haine, Il me traite comme son ennemi;

Lo, he findeth occasions of hostility against me, he counteth me for his enemy;

11 I l met mes pieds dans les ceps, Il surveille tous mes mouvements.

He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.

12 J e te répondrai qu'en cela tu n'as pas raison, Car Dieu est plus grand que l'homme.

Behold, I will answer thee in this, thou art not right; for +God is greater than man.

13 V eux-tu donc disputer avec lui, Parce qu'il ne rend aucun compte de ses actes?

Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.

14 D ieu parle cependant, tantôt d'une manière, Tantôt d'une autre, et l'on n'y prend point garde.

For God speaketh once, and twice,— perceiveth it not—

15 I l parle par des songes, par des visions nocturnes, Quand les hommes sont livrés à un profond sommeil, Quand ils sont endormis sur leur couche.

In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;

16 A lors il leur donne des avertissements Et met le sceau à ses instructions,

Then he openeth men's ears, and sealeth their instruction,

17 A fin de détourner l'homme du mal Et de le préserver de l'orgueil,

That he may withdraw man work, and hide pride from man.

18 A fin de garantir son âme de la fosse Et sa vie des coups du glaive.

He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from passing away by the sword.

19 P ar la douleur aussi l'homme est repris sur sa couche, Quand une lutte continue vient agiter ses os.

He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and with constant strife in his bones;

20 A lors il prend en dégoût le pain, Même les aliments les plus exquis;

And his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty food;

21 S a chair se consume et disparaît, Ses os qu'on ne voyait pas sont mis à nu;

His flesh is consumed away from view, and his bones that were not seen stick out;

22 S on âme s'approche de la fosse, Et sa vie des messagers de la mort.

And his soul draweth near to the pit, and his life to the destroyers.

23 M ais s'il se trouve pour lui un ange intercesseur, Un d'entre les mille Qui annoncent à l'homme la voie qu'il doit suivre,

If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his duty;

24 D ieu a compassion de lui et dit à l'ange: Délivre-le, afin qu'il ne descende pas dans la fosse; J'ai trouvé une rançon!

Then he will be gracious unto him, and say, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.

25 E t sa chair a plus de fraîcheur qu'au premier âge, Il revient aux jours de sa jeunesse.

His flesh shall be fresher than in childhood; he shall return to the days of his youth.

26 I l adresse à Dieu sa prière; et Dieu lui est propice, Lui laisse voir sa face avec joie, Et lui rend son innocence.

He shall pray unto +God, and he will receive him with favour; and he shall see his face with shoutings, and he will render unto man his righteousness.

27 I l chante devant les hommes et dit: J'ai péché, j'ai violé la justice, Et je n'ai pas été puni comme je le méritais;

He will sing before men, and say, I have sinned, and perverted what was right, and it hath not been requited to me;

28 D ieu a délivré mon âme pour qu'elle n'entrât pas dans la fosse, Et ma vie s'épanouit à la lumière!

He hath delivered my soul from going into the pit, and my life shall see the light.

29 V oilà tout ce que Dieu fait, Deux fois, trois fois, avec l'homme,

Lo, all these worketh God twice, thrice, with man,

30 P our ramener son âme de la fosse, Pour l'éclairer de la lumière des vivants.

To bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of the living.

31 S ois attentif, Job, écoute-moi! Tais-toi, et je parlerai!

Mark well, Job, hearken unto me; be silent, and I will speak.

32 S i tu as quelque chose à dire, réponds-moi! Parle, car je voudrais te donner raison.

If thou hast anything to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify thee.

33 S i tu n'as rien à dire, écoute-moi! Tais-toi, et je t'enseignerai la sagesse.

If not, hearken thou unto me; be silent, and I will teach thee wisdom.
