1 J acob appela ses fils, et dit: Assemblez-vous, et je vous annoncerai ce qui vous arrivera dans la suite des temps.

And Jacob called his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, and I will tell you what will befall you at the end of days.

2 R assemblez-vous, et écoutez, fils de Jacob! Écoutez Israël, votre père!

Assemble yourselves, and hear, ye sons of Jacob, And listen to Israel your father.

3 R uben, toi, mon premier-né, Ma force et les prémices de ma vigueur, Supérieur en dignité et supérieur en puissance,

Reuben, thou art my firstborn, My might, and the firstfruits of my vigour: Excellency of dignity, and excellency of strength.

4 I mpétueux comme les eaux, tu n'auras pas la prééminence! Car tu es monté sur la couche de ton père, Tu as souillé ma couche en y montant.

Impetuous as the waters, thou shalt have no pre-eminence; Because thou wentest up to thy father's couch: Then defiledst thou: he went up to my bed.

5 S iméon et Lévi sont frères; Leurs glaives sont des instruments de violence.

Simeon and Levi are brethren: Instruments of violence their swords.

6 Q ue mon âme n'entre point dans leur conciliabule, Que mon esprit ne s'unisse point à leur assemblée! Car, dans leur colère, ils ont tué des hommes, Et, dans leur méchanceté, ils ont coupé les jarrets des taureaux.

My soul, come not into their council; Mine honour, be not united with their assembly; For in their anger they slew men, And in their wantonness houghed oxen.

7 M audite soit leur colère, car elle est violente, Et leur fureur, car elle est cruelle! Je les séparerai dans Jacob, Et je les disperserai dans Israël.

Cursed be their anger, for it violent; And their rage, for it cruel! I will divide them in Jacob, And scatter them in Israel.

8 J uda, tu recevras les hommages de tes frères; Ta main sera sur la nuque de tes ennemis. Les fils de ton père se prosterneront devant toi.

Judah— thee, thy brethren will praise thee; Thy hand will be upon the neck of thine enemies; Thy father's children will bow down to thee.

9 J uda est un jeune lion. Tu reviens du carnage, mon fils! Il ploie les genoux, il se couche comme un lion, Comme une lionne: qui le fera lever?

Judah is a young lion; From the prey, my son, thou art gone up. He stoopeth, he layeth himself down as a lion, And as a lioness: who will rouse him up?

10 L e sceptre ne s'éloignera point de Juda, Ni le bâton souverain d'entre ses pieds, Jusqu'à ce que vienne le Schilo, Et que les peuples lui obéissent.

The scepter will not depart from Judah, Nor the lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh come, And to him will be the obedience of peoples.

11 I l attache à la vigne son âne, Et au meilleur cep le petit de son ânesse; Il lave dans le vin son vêtement, Et dans le sang des raisins son manteau.

He bindeth his foal to the vine, And his ass's colt to the choice vine; He washeth his dress in wine, And his garment in the blood of grapes.

12 I l a les yeux rouges de vin, Et les dents blanches de lait.

The eyes are red with wine, And the teeth white with milk.

13 Z abulon habitera sur la côte des mers, Il sera sur la côte des navires, Et sa limite s'étendra du côté de Sidon.

Zebulun will dwell at the shore of the seas; Yea, he will be at the shore of the ships, And his side upon Sidon.

14 I ssacar est un âne robuste, Qui se couche dans les étables.

Issachar is a bony ass, Crouching down between two hurdles.

15 I l voit que le lieu où il repose est agréable, Et que la contrée est magnifique; Et il courbe son épaule sous le fardeau, Il s'assujettit à un tribut.

And he saw the rest that it was good, And the land that it was pleasant; And he bowed his shoulder to bear, And was a tributary servant.

16 D an jugera son peuple, Comme l'une des tribus d'Israël.

Dan will judge his people, As another of the tribes of Israel.

17 D an sera un serpent sur le chemin, Une vipère sur le sentier, Mordant les talons du cheval, Pour que le cavalier tombe à la renverse.

Dan will be a serpent on the way, A horned snake on the path, Which biteth the horse's heels, So that the rider falleth backwards.

18 J 'espère en ton secours, ô Éternel!

I wait for thy salvation, O Jehovah.

19 G ad sera assailli par des bandes armées, Mais il les assaillira et les poursuivra.

Gad—troops will rush upon him; But he will rush upon the heel.

20 A ser produit une nourriture excellente; Il fournira les mets délicats des rois.

Out of Asher, his bread shall be fat, And he will give royal dainties.

21 N ephthali est une biche en liberté; Il profère de belles paroles.

Naphtali is a hind let loose; He giveth goodly words.

22 J oseph est le rejeton d'un arbre fertile, Le rejeton d'un arbre fertile près d'une source; Les branches s'élèvent au-dessus de la muraille.

Joseph is a fruitful bough; A fruitful bough by a well; branches shoot over the wall.

23 I ls l'ont provoqué, ils ont lancé des traits; Les archers l'ont poursuivi de leur haine.

The archers have provoked him, And shot at, and hated him;

24 M ais son arc est demeuré ferme, Et ses mains ont été fortifiées Par les mains du Puissant de Jacob: Il est ainsi devenu le berger, le rocher d'Israël.

But his bow abideth firm, And the arms of his hands are supple By the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob. From thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:

25 C 'est l'oeuvre du Dieu de ton père, qui t'aidera; C'est l'oeuvre du Tout puissant, qui te bénira Des bénédictions des cieux en haut, Des bénédictions des eaux en bas, Des bénédictions des mamelles et du sein maternel.

From the God of thy father, and he will help thee; And from the Almighty, and he will bless thee—With blessings of heaven from above, With blessings of the deep that lieth under, With blessings of the breast and of the womb.

26 L es bénédictions de ton père s'élèvent Au-dessus des bénédictions de mes pères Jusqu'à la cime des collines éternelles: Qu'elles soient sur la tête de Joseph, Sur le sommet de la tête du prince de ses frères!

The blessings of thy father surpass the blessings of my ancestors, Unto the bounds of the everlasting hills: They shall be on the head of Joseph, And on the crown of the head of him that was separated from his brethren.

27 B enjamin est un loup qui déchire; Le matin, il dévore la proie, Et le soir, il partage le butin.

Benjamin— a wolf will he tear to pieces; In the morning he will devour the prey, And in the evening he will divide the booty.

28 C e sont là tous ceux qui forment les douze tribus d'Israël. Et c'est là ce que leur dit leur père, en les bénissant. Il les bénit, chacun selon sa bénédiction.

All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father spoke to them; and he blessed them: every one according to his blessing he blessed them.

29 P uis il leur donna cet ordre: Je vais être recueilli auprès de mon peuple; enterrez-moi avec mes pères, dans la caverne qui est au champ d'Éphron, le Héthien,

And he charged them, and said to them, I am gathered to my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,

30 d ans la caverne du champ de Macpéla, vis-à-vis de Mamré, dans le pays de Canaan. C'est le champ qu'Abraham a acheté d'Éphron, le Héthien, comme propriété sépulcrale.

in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is opposite to Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought of Ephron the Hittite along with the field for a possession of a sepulchre.

31 L à on a enterré Abraham et Sara, sa femme; là on a enterré Isaac et Rebecca, sa femme; et là j'ai enterré Léa.

There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebecca his wife; and there I buried Leah.

32 L e champ et la caverne qui s'y trouve ont été achetés des fils de Heth.

The purchase of the field, and of the cave that is in it, was from the children of Heth.

33 L orsque Jacob eut achevé de donner ses ordres à ses fils, il retira ses pieds dans le lit, il expira, et fut recueilli auprès de son peuple.

And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered his feet into the bed, and expired, and was gathered to his peoples.
