1 A insi furent achevés les cieux et la terre, et toute leur armée.

And the heavens and the earth and all their host were finished.

2 D ieu acheva au septième jour son oeuvre, qu'il avait faite: et il se reposa au septième jour de toute son oeuvre, qu'il avait faite.

And God had finished on the seventh day his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

3 D ieu bénit le septième jour, et il le sanctifia, parce qu'en ce jour il se reposa de toute son oeuvre qu'il avait créée en la faisant.

And God blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it, because that on it he rested from all his work which God had created in making it.

4 V oici les origines des cieux et de la terre, quand ils furent créés.

These are the histories of the heavens and the earth, when they were created, in the day that Jehovah Elohim made earth and heavens,

5 L orsque l'Éternel Dieu fit une terre et des cieux, aucun arbuste des champs n'était encore sur la terre, et aucune herbe des champs ne germait encore: car l'Éternel Dieu n'avait pas fait pleuvoir sur la terre, et il n'y avait point d'homme pour cultiver le sol.

and every shrub of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew; for Jehovah Elohim had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground.

6 M ais une vapeur s'éleva de la terre, et arrosa toute la surface du sol.

But a mist went up from the earth, and moistened the whole surface of the ground.

7 L 'Éternel Dieu forma l'homme de la poussière de la terre, il souffla dans ses narines un souffle de vie et l'homme devint un être vivant.

And Jehovah Elohim formed Man, dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and Man became a living soul.

8 P uis l'Éternel Dieu planta un jardin en Éden, du côté de l'orient, et il y mit l'homme qu'il avait formé.

And Jehovah Elohim planted a garden in Eden eastward, and there put Man whom he had formed.

9 L 'Éternel Dieu fit pousser du sol des arbres de toute espèce, agréables à voir et bons à manger, et l'arbre de la vie au milieu du jardin, et l'arbre de la connaissance du bien et du mal.

And out of the ground Jehovah Elohim made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; and the tree of life, in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10 U n fleuve sortait d'Éden pour arroser le jardin, et de là il se divisait en quatre bras.

And a river went out of Eden, to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became four main streams.

11 L e nom du premier est Pischon; c'est celui qui entoure tout le pays de Havila, où se trouve l'or.

The name of the one is Pison: that is it which surrounds the whole land of Havilah, where the gold is.

12 L 'or de ce pays est pur; on y trouve aussi le bdellium et la pierre d'onyx.

And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and the onyx stone are there.

13 L e nom du second fleuve est Guihon; c'est celui qui entoure tout le pays de Cusch.

And the name of the second river is Gihon: that is it which surrounds the whole land of Cush.

14 L e nom du troisième est Hiddékel; c'est celui qui coule à l'orient de l'Assyrie. Le quatrième fleuve, c'est l'Euphrate.

And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which flows forward toward Asshur. And the fourth river, that is Euphrates.

15 L 'Éternel Dieu prit l'homme, et le plaça dans le jardin d'Éden pour le cultiver et pour le garder.

And Jehovah Elohim took Man, and put him into the garden of Eden, to till it and to guard it.

16 L 'Éternel Dieu donna cet ordre à l'homme: Tu pourras manger de tous les arbres du jardin;

And Jehovah Elohim commanded Man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou shalt freely eat;

17 m ais tu ne mangeras pas de l'arbre de la connaissance du bien et du mal, car le jour où tu en mangeras, tu mourras.

but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest of it thou shalt certainly die.

18 L 'Éternel Dieu dit: Il n'est pas bon que l'homme soit seul; je lui ferai une aide semblable à lui.

And Jehovah Elohim said, It is not good that Man should be alone; I will make him a helpmate, his like.

19 L 'Éternel Dieu forma de la terre tous les animaux des champs et tous les oiseaux du ciel, et il les fit venir vers l'homme, pour voir comment il les appellerait, et afin que tout être vivant portât le nom que lui donnerait l'homme.

And out of the ground Jehovah Elohim had formed every animal of the field and all fowl of the heavens, and brought to Man, to see what he would call them; and whatever Man called each living soul, that was its name.

20 E t l'homme donna des noms à tout le bétail, aux oiseaux du ciel et à tous les animaux des champs; mais, pour l'homme, il ne trouva point d'aide semblable à lui.

And Man gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the heavens, and to every beast of the field; but as for Adam, he found no helpmate, his like.

21 A lors l'Éternel Dieu fit tomber un profond sommeil sur l'homme, qui s'endormit; il prit une de ses côtes, et referma la chair à sa place.

And Jehovah Elohim caused a deep sleep to fall upon Man; and he slept. And he took one of his ribs and closed up flesh in its stead.

22 L 'Éternel Dieu forma une femme de la côte qu'il avait prise de l'homme, et il l'amena vers l'homme.

And Jehovah Elohim built the rib that he had taken from Man into a woman; and brought her to Man.

23 E t l'homme dit: Voici cette fois celle qui est os de mes os et chair de ma chair! on l'appellera femme, parce qu'elle a été prise de l'homme.

And Man said, This time it is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh: this shall be called Woman, because this was taken out of a man.

24 C 'est pourquoi l'homme quittera son père et sa mère, et s'attachera à sa femme, et ils deviendront une seule chair.

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

25 L 'homme et sa femme étaient tous deux nus, et ils n'en avaient point honte.

And they were both naked, Man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
