1 N ow the king and Haman came to drink wine with Esther the queen.

Il re e Aman andarono dunque al convito con la regina Ester.

2 A nd the king said to Esther on the second day also as they drank their wine at the banquet, “ What is your petition, Queen Esther? It shall be granted you. And what is your request? Even to half of the kingdom it shall be done.”

Anche in questo secondo giorno il re disse a Ester, mentre bevevano il vino durante il convito: «Qual è la tua richiesta, o regina Ester? Ti sarà concessa. Che desideri? Fosse anche la metà del regno, l’avrai».

3 T hen Queen Esther replied, “ If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me as my petition, and my people as my request;

Allora la regina Ester rispose: «Se ho trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi, o re, e se così piace al re, la mia richiesta è che mi sia donata la vita; e il mio desiderio, che mi sia donato il mio popolo.

4 f or we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be killed and to be annihilated. Now if we had only been sold as slaves, men and women, I would have remained silent, for the trouble would not be commensurate with the annoyance to the king.”

Perché io e il mio popolo siamo stati venduti per essere distrutti, uccisi, sterminati. Se fossimo stati venduti per diventare schiavi e schiave, non avrei parlato; ma il nostro avversario non potrebbe riparare al danno fatto al re con la nostra morte».

5 T hen King Ahasuerus asked Queen Esther, “Who is he, and where is he, who would presume to do thus?”

Il re Assuero prese a dire alla regina Ester: «Chi è, e dov’è colui che ha tanta presunzione da far questo?»

6 E sther said, “ A foe and an enemy is this wicked Haman!” Then Haman became terrified before the king and queen. Haman Is Hanged

Ester rispose: «L’avversario, il nemico, è quel malvagio di Aman». Allora Aman fu colto da terrore in presenza del re e della regina.

7 T he king arose in his anger from drinking wine and went into the palace garden; but Haman stayed to beg for his life from Queen Esther, for he saw that harm had been determined against him by the king.

Il re tutto adirato si alzò, e dal luogo del convito andò nel giardino del palazzo; ma Aman rimase per implorare la grazia della vita alla regina Ester, perché vedeva bene che nel suo cuore il re aveva deciso la sua rovina.

8 N ow when the king returned from the palace garden into the place where they were drinking wine, Haman was falling on the couch where Esther was. Then the king said, “Will he even assault the queen with me in the house?” As the word went out of the king’s mouth, they covered Haman’s face.

Poi il re tornò dal giardino del palazzo nel luogo dove bevevano il vino. Intanto Aman si era gettato sul divano sul quale si trovava Ester; e il re esclamò: «Vuole addirittura far violenza alla regina, davanti a me, in casa mia?» L’ordine uscì dalla bocca del re, e coprirono la faccia ad Aman;

9 T hen Harbonah, one of the eunuchs who were before the king said, “Behold indeed, the gallows standing at Haman’s house fifty cubits high, which Haman made for Mordecai who spoke good on behalf of the king!” And the king said, “Hang him on it.”

Carbona, uno degli eunuchi, disse in presenza del re: «Ecco, è perfino rizzata in casa di Aman la forca alta cinquanta cubiti che Aman ha fatto preparare per Mardocheo, il quale aveva parlato per il bene del re». E il re disse: «Impiccateci lui!»

10 S o they hanged Haman on the gallows which he had prepared for Mordecai, and the king’s anger subsided.

Così Aman fu impiccato alla forca che egli aveva preparata per Mardocheo, e l’ira del re si calmò.
