1 N ow the Lord said to Joshua, “ Do not fear or be dismayed. Take all the people of war with you and arise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land.

Poi il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Non temere, e non ti sgomentare! Prendi con te tutta la gente di guerra, àlzati e sali contro Ai. Guarda, io do in tua mano il re di Ai, il suo popolo, la sua città e il suo paese.

2 Y ou shall do to Ai and its king just as you did to Jericho and its king; you shall take only its spoil and its cattle as plunder for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it.”

Tu tratterai Ai e il suo re come hai trattato Gerico e il suo re; ne prenderete per voi soltanto il bottino e il bestiame. Tendi un’imboscata dietro la città».

3 S o Joshua rose with all the people of war to go up to Ai; and Joshua chose 30, 000 men, valiant warriors, and sent them out at night.

Giosuè dunque con tutta la gente di guerra si alzò per salire contro Ai. Egli scelse trentamila uomini valenti e prodi, li fece partire di notte

4 H e commanded them, saying, “See, you are going to ambush the city from behind it. Do not go very far from the city, but all of you be ready.

e diede loro quest’ordine: «Tenderete un’imboscata dietro la città; non allontanatevi troppo dalla città e siate tutti pronti.

5 T hen I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. And when they come out to meet us as at the first, we will flee before them.

Io e tutto il popolo che è con me ci accosteremo alla città e, quando essi usciranno contro di noi come la prima volta, ci metteremo in fuga davanti a loro.

6 T hey will come out after us until we have drawn them away from the city, for they will say, ‘ They are fleeing before us as at the first.’ So we will flee before them.

Essi c’inseguiranno finché noi li avremo attirati lontano dalla città, perché diranno: “Essi fuggono dinanzi a noi come la prima volta”. E noi fuggiremo davanti a loro.

7 A nd you shall rise from your ambush and take possession of the city, for the Lord your God will deliver it into your hand.

Voi allora uscirete dall’imboscata e v’impadronirete della città; il Signore, il vostro Dio, la darà in mano vostra.

8 T hen it will be when you have seized the city, that you shall set the city on fire. You shall do it according to the word of the Lord. See, I have commanded you.”

E quando avrete preso la città, la incendierete; farete come ha detto il Signore. Badate bene, questo è l’ordine che io vi do».

9 S o Joshua sent them away, and they went to the place of ambush and remained between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai; but Joshua spent that night among the people.

Così Giosuè li mandò, e quelli andarono al luogo dell’imboscata, e si fermarono fra Betel e Ai, a occidente di Ai; ma Giosuè rimase quella notte in mezzo al popolo.

10 N ow Joshua rose early in the morning and mustered the people, and he went up with the elders of Israel before the people to Ai.

La mattina presto si alzò, passò in rassegna il popolo e salì contro Ai: egli con gli anziani d’Israele, alla testa del popolo.

11 T hen all the people of war who were with him went up and drew near and arrived in front of the city, and camped on the north side of Ai. Now there was a valley between him and Ai.

E tutta la gente di guerra che era con lui salì, si avvicinò, giunse di fronte alla città e si accampò a nord di Ai. Tra lui e Ai c’era una valle.

12 A nd he took about 5, 000 men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.

Giosuè prese circa cinquemila uomini, con i quali tese un’imboscata fra Betel e Ai, a occidente della città.

13 S o they stationed the people, all the army that was on the north side of the city, and its rear guard on the west side of the city, and Joshua spent that night in the midst of the valley.

Il popolo sistemò tutto l’accampamento a nord della città e tese l’imboscata a occidente della città; ma Giosuè, durante quella notte, si spinse avanti in mezzo alla valle.

14 I t came about when the king of Ai saw it, that the men of the city hurried and rose up early and went out to meet Israel in battle, he and all his people at the appointed place before the desert plain. But he did not know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

Quando il re di Ai vide questo, la gente della città si alzò in fretta di buon mattino; e il re e tutto il suo popolo uscirono contro Israele, per dargli battaglia al punto convenuto, al principio della pianura; perché il re non sapeva che c’era un’imboscata contro di lui dietro la città.

15 J oshua and all Israel pretended to be beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

Allora Giosuè e tutto Israele, fingendosi battuti da quelli, si misero in fuga verso il deserto.

16 A nd all the people who were in the city were called together to pursue them, and they pursued Joshua and were drawn away from the city.

E tutto il popolo che era nella città fu chiamato a raccolta per inseguirli; e inseguirono Giosuè e furono attirati lontano dalla città.

17 S o not a man was left in Ai or Bethel who had not gone out after Israel, and they left the city unguarded and pursued Israel.

Non ci fu uomo, in Ai e in Betel, che non uscisse dietro a Israele. Lasciarono la città aperta e inseguirono Israele.

18 T hen the Lord said to Joshua, “ Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” So Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.

Allora il Signore disse a Giosuè: «Stendi verso Ai la lancia che hai in mano, perché io sto per dare Ai in tuo potere». E Giosuè stese verso la città la lancia che aveva in mano.

19 T he men in ambush rose quickly from their place, and when he had stretched out his hand, they ran and entered the city and captured it, and they quickly set the city on fire.

E subito, non appena ebbe steso la mano, gli uomini dell’imboscata uscirono dal luogo dov’erano, entrarono di corsa nella città, la presero, e s’affrettarono ad appiccarvi il fuoco.

20 W hen the men of Ai turned back and looked, behold, the smoke of the city ascended to the sky, and they had no place to flee this way or that, for the people who had been fleeing to the wilderness turned against the pursuers.

E la gente di Ai, voltandosi indietro, guardò e vide che il fumo della città saliva al cielo; e non vi fu per loro alcuna possibilità di fuggire né da una parte né dall’altra, perché il popolo che fuggiva verso il deserto si era voltato contro quelli che lo inseguivano.

21 W hen Joshua and all Israel saw that the men in ambush had captured the city and that the smoke of the city ascended, they turned back and slew the men of Ai.

Giosuè e tutto Israele, vedendo che quelli dell’imboscata avevano preso la città e che il fumo saliva dalla città, tornarono indietro e batterono la gente di Ai.

22 T he others came out from the city to encounter them, so that they were trapped in the midst of Israel, some on this side and some on that side; and they slew them until no one was left of those who survived or escaped.

Anche gli altri uscirono dalla città contro di loro; cosicché gli uomini di Ai furono presi in mezzo da Israele, avendo gli uni di qua e gli altri di là; e Israele li batté in modo che non ne rimase né superstite né fuggiasco.

23 B ut they took alive the king of Ai and brought him to Joshua.

Ma il re di Ai lo presero vivo e lo portarono da Giosuè.

24 N ow when Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the field in the wilderness where they pursued them, and all of them were fallen by the edge of the sword until they were destroyed, then all Israel returned to Ai and struck it with the edge of the sword.

Quando Israele ebbe finito di uccidere tutti gli abitanti di Ai nella campagna, nel deserto dove quelli l’avevano inseguito, e tutti furono caduti sotto i colpi della spada finché non ne rimasero più, tutto Israele tornò verso Ai e la mise a fil di spada.

25 A ll who fell that day, both men and women, were 12, 000—all the people of Ai.

Tutti quelli che caddero in quel giorno, fra uomini e donne, furono dodicimila: vale a dire tutta la gente di Ai.

26 F or Joshua did not withdraw his hand with which he stretched out the javelin until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

Giosuè non ritirò la mano che aveva stesa con la lancia, finché non ebbe sterminato tutti gli abitanti di Ai.

27 I srael took only the cattle and the spoil of that city as plunder for themselves, according to the word of the Lord which He had commanded Joshua.

Israele prese per sé soltanto il bestiame e il bottino di quella città, secondo l’ordine che il Signore aveva dato a Giosuè.

28 S o Joshua burned Ai and made it a heap forever, a desolation until this day.

Giosuè incendiò dunque Ai e la ridusse per sempre in un mucchio di rovine com’è ancora oggi.

29 H e hanged the king of Ai on a tree until evening; and at sunset Joshua gave command and they took his body down from the tree and threw it at the entrance of the city gate, and raised over it a great heap of stones that stands to this day.

Quanto al re di Ai, l’appese a un albero, e ve lo lasciò fino a sera; ma al tramonto del sole Giosuè ordinò che il cadavere fosse calato dall’albero; e lo gettarono all’ingresso della porta della città, e gli ammassarono sopra un gran mucchio di pietre, che rimane ancora al giorno d’oggi. 30 T hen Joshua built an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel, in Mount Ebal,

Allora Giosuè costruì un altare al Signore, Dio d’Israele, sul monte Ebal,

31 j ust as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the sons of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of uncut stones on which no man had wielded an iron tool; and they offered burnt offerings on it to the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings.

come Mosè, servo del Signore, aveva ordinato ai figli d’Israele, e come sta scritto nel libro della legge di Mosè: un altare di pietre intatte sulle quali nessun ferro era passato; e i figli d’Israele offrirono su di esso olocausti al Signore e fecero sacrifici di riconoscenza.

32 H e wrote there on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written, in the presence of the sons of Israel.

E là, su delle pietre, Giosuè scrisse una copia della legge che Mosè aveva scritta in presenza dei figli d’Israele.

33 A ll Israel with their elders and officers and their judges were standing on both sides of the ark before the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, the stranger as well as the native. Half of them stood in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, just as Moses the servant of the Lord had given command at first to bless the people of Israel.

Tutto Israele, i suoi anziani, i suoi ufficiali e i suoi giudici stavano in piedi ai due lati dell’arca, di fronte ai sacerdoti levitici che portavano l’arca del patto del Signore: gli stranieri come gli Israeliti di nascita, metà dal lato del monte Gherizim, metà dal lato del monte Ebal, come Mosè, servo del Signore, aveva da prima ordinato che si benedicesse il popolo d’Israele.

34 T hen afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

Dopo questo, Giosuè lesse tutte le parole della legge, le benedizioni e le maledizioni, secondo tutto ciò che è scritto nel libro della legge.

35 T here was not a word of all that Moses had commanded which Joshua did not read before all the assembly of Israel with the women and the little ones and the strangers who were living among them.

Non vi fu parola, di tutto ciò che Mosè aveva comandato, che Giosuè non leggesse in presenza di tutta la comunità d’Israele, delle donne, dei bambini e degli stranieri che camminavano in mezzo a loro.
