1 T he word that came to Jeremiah for all the Jews living in the land of Egypt, those who were living in Migdol, Tahpanhes, Memphis, and the land of Pathros, saying,

Ecco la parola che fu rivolta a Geremia riguardo a tutti i Giudei che abitavano nel paese d’Egitto, residenti a Migdol, a Tapanes, a Nof e nel paese di Patros:

2 “ Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘You yourselves have seen all the calamity that I have brought on Jerusalem and all the cities of Judah; and behold, this day they are in ruins and no one lives in them,

«Così parla il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele: “Voi avete visto tutto il male che io ho fatto venire sopra Gerusalemme e sopra tutte le città di Giuda; ed ecco, oggi sono una desolazione e non c’è chi abiti in esse,

3 b ecause of their wickedness which they committed so as to provoke Me to anger by continuing to burn sacrifices and to serve other gods whom they had not known, neither they, you, nor your fathers.

a causa della malvagità che hanno commessa per provocare la mia ira, andando a offrire profumi e a servire altri dèi, i quali né essi, né voi, né i vostri padri avete mai conosciuti.

4 Y et I sent you all My servants the prophets, again and again, saying, “Oh, do not do this abominable thing which I hate.”

Io vi ho mandato tutti i miei servitori, i profeti; ve li ho mandati continuamente, sin dal mattino, a dirvi: ‘Non fate questa cosa abominevole che io detesto’;

5 B ut they did not listen or incline their ears to turn from their wickedness, so as not to burn sacrifices to other gods.

ma essi non hanno ubbidito, non hanno prestato orecchio, non si sono distolti dalla loro malvagità, non hanno smesso di offrire profumi ad altri dèi;

6 T herefore My wrath and My anger were poured out and burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, so they have become a ruin and a desolation as it is this day.

perciò il mio furore e la mia ira si sono riversati e hanno divampato nelle città di Giuda e nelle vie di Gerusalemme, che sono ridotte deserte e desolate, come oggi si vede”.

7 N ow then thus says the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, “Why are you doing great harm to yourselves, so as to cut off from you man and woman, child and infant, from among Judah, leaving yourselves without remnant,

Ora così parla il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele: “Perché commettete questo gran male contro voi stessi, tanto da farvi sterminare in mezzo a Giuda, uomini e donne, bambini e lattanti, al punto che non rimanga di voi nessun residuo?

8 p rovoking Me to anger with the works of your hands, burning sacrifices to other gods in the land of Egypt, where you are entering to reside, so that you might be cut off and become a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?

Perché provocare la mia ira con l’opera delle vostre mani, offrendo profumi ad altri dèi nel paese d’Egitto dove siete venuti ad abitare? Così vi farete sterminare e sarete abbandonati alla maledizione e all’infamia fra tutte le nazioni della terra.

9 H ave you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

Avete forse dimenticato le malvagità dei vostri padri, le malvagità dei re di Giuda, le malvagità delle loro mogli, le malvagità vostre e le malvagità commesse dalle vostre mogli nel paese di Giuda e per le vie di Gerusalemme?

10 B ut they have not become contrite even to this day, nor have they feared nor walked in My law or My statutes, which I have set before you and before your fathers.”’

Fino a oggi non c’è stata contrizione da parte loro, non hanno avuto timore, non hanno camminato secondo la mia legge e secondo i miei statuti, che io avevo messo davanti a voi e davanti ai vostri padri”.

11 “ Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I am going to set My face against you for woe, even to cut off all Judah.

Perciò così parla il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele: “Ecco, io volgo la mia faccia contro di voi per il vostro male e per distruggere tutto Giuda.

12 A nd I will take away the remnant of Judah who have set their mind on entering the land of Egypt to reside there, and they will all meet their end in the land of Egypt; they will fall by the sword and meet their end by famine. Both small and great will die by the sword and famine; and they will become a curse, an object of horror, an imprecation and a reproach.

Prenderò i superstiti di Giuda che si sono ostinati a venire nel paese d’Egitto per abitarvi, e saranno tutti consumati. Cadranno nel paese d’Egitto e saranno consumati dalla spada e dalla fame, dal più piccolo al più grande; periranno per la spada e per la fame e saranno abbandonati all’esecrazione, alla desolazione, alla maledizione e all’infamia.

13 A nd I will punish those who live in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, with the sword, with famine and with pestilence.

Punirò quelli che abitano nel paese d’Egitto, come ho punito Gerusalemme, con la spada, con la fame e con la peste;

14 S o there will be no refugees or survivors for the remnant of Judah who have entered the land of Egypt to reside there and then to return to the land of Judah, to which they are longing to return and live; for none will return except a few refugees.’”

nessuno si salverà o scamperà dei superstiti di Giuda che sono venuti a stare nel paese d’Egitto con la speranza di tornare poi nel paese di Giuda, dove desiderano rientrare per abitarvi; essi, a eccezione di alcuni fuggiaschi, non vi ritorneranno”».

15 T hen all the men who were aware that their wives were burning sacrifices to other gods, along with all the women who were standing by, as a large assembly, including all the people who were living in Pathros in the land of Egypt, responded to Jeremiah, saying,

Allora tutti gli uomini, i quali sapevano che le loro mogli offrivano profumi ad altri dèi, tutte le donne che si trovavano là riunite in gran numero e tutto il popolo residente nel paese d’Egitto, a Patros, risposero a Geremia, dicendo:

16 “ As for the message that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, we are not going to listen to you!

«Quanto alla parola che ci hai detta nel nome del Signore, noi non ti ubbidiremo,

17 B ut rather we will certainly carry out every word that has proceeded from our mouths, by burning sacrifices to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, just as we ourselves, our forefathers, our kings and our princes did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then we had plenty of food and were well off and saw no misfortune.

ma vogliamo mettere interamente in pratica tutto quello che la nostra bocca ha espresso: offrire profumi alla regina del cielo, farle delle libazioni, come già abbiamo fatto noi, i nostri padri, i nostri re, i nostri capi, nelle città di Giuda e per le vie di Gerusalemme. Allora avevamo abbondanza di pane, stavamo bene e non vedevamo nessuna calamità;

18 B ut since we stopped burning sacrifices to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have met our end by the sword and by famine.”

ma da quando abbiamo smesso di offrire profumi alla regina del cielo e di farle delle libazioni, abbiamo avuto mancanza di ogni cosa, siamo stati consumati dalla spada e dalla fame.

19 “ And,” said the women, “when we were burning sacrifices to the queen of heaven and were pouring out drink offerings to her, was it without our husbands that we made for her sacrificial cakes in her image and poured out drink offerings to her?” Calamity for the Jews

Quando noi offriamo profumi alla regina del cielo e le facciamo delle libazioni, è forse senza il consenso dei nostri mariti che le facciamo delle focacce a sua immagine e le offriamo delle libazioni?»

20 T hen Jeremiah said to all the people, to the men and women—even to all the people who were giving him such an answer—saying,

Geremia parlò a tutto il popolo, agli uomini, alle donne e a tutto il popolo che gli aveva risposto a quel modo, e disse:

21 “ As for the smoking sacrifices that you burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your forefathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the Lord remember them and did not all this come into His mind?

«Non sono forse i profumi che avete offerti nelle città di Giuda e per le vie di Gerusalemme, voi, i vostri padri, i vostri re, i vostri capi e il popolo del paese, quelli che il Signore ha ricordato e che gli sono tornati in mente?

22 S o the Lord was no longer able to endure it, because of the evil of your deeds, because of the abominations which you have committed; thus your land has become a ruin, an object of horror and a curse, without an inhabitant, as it is this day.

Il Signore non l’ha più potuto sopportare, a causa della malvagità delle vostre azioni e a causa delle abominazioni che avete commesse; perciò il vostro paese è stato abbandonato alla devastazione, alla desolazione e alla maledizione, senza che vi sia più chi lo abiti, come oggi si vede.

23 B ecause you have burned sacrifices and have sinned against the Lord and not obeyed the voice of the Lord or walked in His law, His statutes or His testimonies, therefore this calamity has befallen you, as it has this day.”

Perché voi avete offerto quei profumi e avete peccato contro il Signore e non avete ubbidito alla voce del Signore e non avete camminato secondo la sua legge, i suoi statuti e le sue testimonianze, perciò vi è avvenuto questo male che oggi si vede».

24 T hen Jeremiah said to all the people, including all the women, “ Hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who are in the land of Egypt,

Poi Geremia disse a tutto il popolo e a tutte le donne: «Ascoltate la parola del Signore, voi tutti di Giuda che siete nel paese d’Egitto!

25 t hus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, as follows: ‘As for you and your wives, you have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled it with your hands, saying, “We will certainly perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn sacrifices to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her.” Go ahead and confirm your vows, and certainly perform your vows!’

Così parla il Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele: “Voi e le vostre mogli lo dite con la vostra bocca e lo mettete in pratica con le vostre mani; voi dite: ‘Vogliamo adempiere i voti che abbiamo fatti, offrendo profumi alla regina del cielo e facendole delle libazioni’. Sì, voi adempite i vostri voti; sì, voi eseguite i vostri voti.

26 N evertheless hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who are living in the land of Egypt, ‘Behold, I have sworn by My great name,’ says the Lord, ‘ never shall My name be invoked again by the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, “ As the Lord God lives.”

Perciò ascoltate la parola del Signore, voi tutti di Giuda che abitate nel paese d’Egitto! Ecco, io giuro per il mio gran nome”, dice il Signore, “in tutto il paese d’Egitto il mio nome non sarà più invocato dalla bocca di nessun uomo di Giuda che dica: ‘Il Signore, Dio, vive!’

27 B ehold, I am watching over them for harm and not for good, and all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt will meet their end by the sword and by famine until they are completely gone.

Ecco, io vigilo su di loro per il loro male, e non per il loro bene; tutti gli uomini di Giuda che sono nel paese d’Egitto saranno consumati dalla spada e dalla fame, finché non siano interamente scomparsi.

28 T hose who escape the sword will return out of the land of Egypt to the land of Judah few in number. Then all the remnant of Judah who have gone to the land of Egypt to reside there will know whose word will stand, Mine or theirs.

Quelli che saranno scampati alla spada ritorneranno dal paese d’Egitto nel paese di Giuda; saranno un piccolo numero. Tutto il rimanente di Giuda, quelli che sono venuti nel paese d’Egitto per abitarvi, riconosceranno qual è la parola che vale, la mia o la loro.

29 T his will be the sign to you,’ declares the Lord, ‘that I am going to punish you in this place, so that you may know that My words will surely stand against you for harm.’

Questo vi servirà di segno”, dice il Signore, “che io vi punirò in questo luogo, affinché riconosciate che le mie parole contro di voi saranno certamente adempiute, per il vostro male”. Così parla il Signore:

30 T hus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I am going to give over Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt to the hand of his enemies, to the hand of those who seek his life, just as I gave over Zedekiah king of Judah to the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who was his enemy and was seeking his life.’”

“Ecco, io darò il faraone Cofra, re d’Egitto, nelle mani dei suoi nemici, nelle mani di quelli che cercano la sua vita, come ho dato Sedechia, re di Giuda, nelle mani di Nabucodonosor, re di Babilonia, suo nemico, che cercava la vita di lui”».
