1 T hen it happened in the spring, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel, and they destroyed the sons of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem.

L’anno seguente, nella stagione in cui i re cominciano le guerre, Davide mandò Ioab con la sua gente e con tutto Israele a devastare il paese dei figli di Ammon e ad assediare Rabba; ma Davide rimase a Gerusalemme.

2 N ow when evening came David arose from his bed and walked around on the roof of the king’s house, and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful in appearance.

Una sera Davide, alzatosi dal suo letto, si mise a passeggiare sulla terrazza del palazzo reale; dalla terrazza vide una donna che faceva il bagno. La donna era bellissima.

3 S o David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”

Davide mandò a chiedere chi fosse la donna. Gli dissero: «È Bat-Sceba, figlia di Eliam, moglie di Uria, l’Ittita».

4 D avid sent messengers and took her, and when she came to him, he lay with her; and when she had purified herself from her uncleanness, she returned to her house.

Davide mandò a prenderla; lei venne da lui ed egli si unì a lei, che si era purificata dalla sua impurità; poi lei tornò a casa sua.

5 T he woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, “ I am pregnant.”

La donna rimase incinta e lo fece sapere a Davide dicendo: «Sono incinta».

6 T hen David sent to Joab, saying, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” So Joab sent Uriah to David.

Allora Davide fece dire a Ioab: «Mandami Uria, l’Ittita». Ioab mandò Uria da Davide.

7 W hen Uriah came to him, David asked concerning the welfare of Joab and the people and the state of the war.

Quando Uria giunse da Davide, questi gli chiese come stavano Ioab e il popolo e come andava la guerra.

8 T hen David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house, and wash your feet.” And Uriah went out of the king’s house, and a present from the king was sent out after him.

Poi Davide disse a Uria: «Scendi a casa tua e lavati i piedi». Uria uscì dal palazzo reale e gli furono mandate dietro delle vivande del re.

9 B ut Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house.

Ma Uria dormì alla porta del palazzo del re con tutti i servi del suo signore, e non scese a casa sua.

10 N ow when they told David, saying, “Uriah did not go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “Have you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?”

Ciò fu riferito a Davide. Gli dissero: «Uria non è sceso a casa sua». Allora Davide disse a Uria: «Tu hai fatto un lungo viaggio. Perché dunque non sei sceso a casa tua?»

11 U riah said to David, “ The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in temporary shelters, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? By your life and the life of your soul, I will not do this thing.”

Uria rispose a Davide: «L’arca, Israele e Giuda stanno sotto le tende, Ioab mio signore e i suoi servi sono accampati in aperta campagna e io entrerei in casa mia per mangiare, bere e per coricarmi con mia moglie? Com’è vero che il Signore vive e che anche tu vivi, io non farò questo!»

12 T hen David said to Uriah, “ Stay here today also, and tomorrow I will let you go.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next.

Davide disse a Uria: «Trattieniti qui anche oggi, e domani ti lascerò partire». Così Uria rimase a Gerusalemme quel giorno e il giorno seguente.

13 N ow David called him, and he ate and drank before him, and he made him drunk; and in the evening he went out to lie on his bed with his lord’s servants, but he did not go down to his house.

Davide lo invitò a mangiare e a bere con sé; lo ubriacò, e la sera Uria uscì per andarsene a dormire sul suo lettuccio con i servi del suo signore, ma non scese a casa sua.

14 N ow in the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

La mattina seguente, Davide scrisse una lettera a Ioab e gliela mandò per mezzo d’Uria.

15 H e had written in the letter, saying, “ Place Uriah in the front line of the fiercest battle and withdraw from him, so that he may be struck down and die.”

Nella lettera aveva scritto così: «Mandate Uria al fronte, dove più infuria la battaglia; poi ritiratevi da lui, perché egli resti colpito e muoia».

16 S o it was as Joab kept watch on the city, that he put Uriah at the place where he knew there were valiant men.

Ioab dunque, assediando la città, pose Uria nel luogo dove sapeva che il nemico aveva degli uomini valorosi.

17 T he men of the city went out and fought against Joab, and some of the people among David’s servants fell; and Uriah the Hittite also died.

Gli uomini della città fecero una sortita e attaccarono Ioab; parecchi del popolo, della gente di Davide, caddero e perì anche Uria, l’Ittita.

18 T hen Joab sent and reported to David all the events of the war.

Allora Ioab inviò un messaggero a Davide per fargli sapere tutte le cose che erano accadute nella battaglia

19 H e charged the messenger, saying, “When you have finished telling all the events of the war to the king,

e diede al messaggero quest’ordine: «Quando avrai finito di raccontare al re tutto quello che è successo nella battaglia,

20 a nd if it happens that the king’s wrath rises and he says to you, ‘Why did you go so near to the city to fight? Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall?

può darsi che il re vada in collera e ti dica: “Perché vi siete avvicinati così alla città per dare battaglia? Non sapevate che avrebbero tirato dalle mura?

21 W ho struck down Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman throw an upper millstone on him from the wall so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?’—then you shall say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.’”

Chi fu che uccise Abimelec, figlio di Ierubbeset ? Non fu una donna che gli gettò addosso un pezzo di macina dalle mura, in modo che morì a Tebes? Perché vi siete avvicinati così alle mura?” Tu allora gli dirai: “Anche il tuo servo Uria, l’Ittita, è morto”».

22 S o the messenger departed and came and reported to David all that Joab had sent him to tell.

Il messaggero partì e, giunto, riferì a Davide tutto quello che Ioab l’aveva incaricato di dire.

23 T he messenger said to David, “The men prevailed against us and came out against us in the field, but we pressed them as far as the entrance of the gate.

Il messaggero disse a Davide: «I nemici avevano avuto del vantaggio su di noi e avevano fatto una sortita contro di noi nella campagna, ma noi fummo loro addosso fino alla porta della città;

24 M oreover, the archers shot at your servants from the wall; so some of the king’s servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is also dead.”

allora gli arcieri tirarono sulla tua gente dalle mura e parecchi della gente del re perirono, e Uria, l’Ittita, tuo servo, perì anche lui».

25 T hen David said to the messenger, “Thus you shall say to Joab, ‘Do not let this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another; make your battle against the city stronger and overthrow it’; and so encourage him.”

Allora Davide disse al messaggero: «Dirai così a Ioab: “Non affliggerti per ciò che è accaduto, perché la spada divora ora l’uno ora l’altro; rinforza l’attacco contro la città e distruggila”. E tu fagli coraggio».

26 N ow when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.

Quando la moglie di Uria udì che suo marito era morto, lo pianse.

27 W hen the time of mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house and she became his wife; then she bore him a son. But the thing that David had done was evil in the sight of the Lord.

Dopo che ebbe finito i giorni del lutto, Davide la mandò a prendere in casa sua. Lei divenne sua moglie e gli partorì un figlio. Ma quello che Davide aveva fatto dispiacque al Signore.
