1 H ermanos míos, no os hagáis maestros muchos de vosotros, sabiendo que recibiremos un juicio más severo.

Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.

2 P orque todos tropezamos de muchas maneras. Si alguno no tropieza en lo que dice, es un hombre perfecto, capaz también de refrenar todo el cuerpo.

For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

3 A hora bien, si ponemos el freno en la boca de los caballos para que nos obedezcan, dirigimos también todo su cuerpo.

Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.

4 M irad también las naves; aunque son tan grandes e impulsadas por fuertes vientos, son, sin embargo, dirigidas mediante un timón muy pequeño por donde la voluntad del piloto quiere.

Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.

5 A sí también la lengua es un miembro pequeño, y sin embargo, se jacta de grandes cosas. Mirad, ¡qué gran bosque se incendia con tan pequeño fuego!

So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!

6 Y la lengua es un fuego, un mundo de iniquidad. La lengua está puesta entre nuestros miembros, la cual contamina todo el cuerpo, es encendida por el infierno e inflama el curso de nuestra vida.

And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.

7 P orque todo género de fieras y de aves, de reptiles y de animales marinos, se puede domar y ha sido domado por el género humano,

For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.

8 p ero ningún hombre puede domar la lengua; es un mal turbulento y lleno de veneno mortal.

But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.

9 C on ella bendecimos a nuestro Señor y Padre, y con ella maldecimos a los hombres, que han sido hechos a la imagen de Dios;

With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;

10 d e la misma boca proceden bendición y maldición. Hermanos míos, esto no debe ser así.

from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.

11 ¿ Acaso una fuente por la misma abertura echa agua dulce y amarga?

Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water ?

12 ¿ Acaso, hermanos míos, puede una higuera producir aceitunas, o una vid higos? Tampoco la fuente de agua salada puede producir agua dulce. Sabiduría de lo alto

Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh. Wisdom from Above

13 ¿ Quién es sabio y entendido entre vosotros? Que muestre por su buena conducta sus obras en mansedumbre de sabiduría.

Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.

14 P ero si tenéis celos amargos y ambición personal en vuestro corazón, no seáis arrogantes y así mintáis contra la verdad.

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.

15 E sta sabiduría no es la que viene de lo alto, sino que es terrenal, natural, diabólica.

This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.

16 P orque donde hay celos y ambición personal, allí hay confusión y toda cosa mala.

For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.

17 P ero la sabiduría de lo alto es primeramente pura, después pacífica, amable, condescendiente, llena de misericordia y de buenos frutos, sin vacilación, sin hipocresía.

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.

18 Y la semilla cuyo fruto es la justicia se siembra en paz por aquellos que hacen la paz.

And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
