1 I say truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing witness with me in Holy Spirit,

Verdad digo en Cristo, no miento, y mi conciencia me da testimonio en el Espíritu Santo,

2 t hat I have great grief and uninterrupted pain in my heart,

que tengo gran tristeza y continuo dolor en mi corazón,

3 f or I have wished, I myself, to be a curse from the Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen, according to flesh;

porque deseara yo mismo ser anatema, separado de Cristo, por amor a mis hermanos, los que son mis parientes según la carne;

4 w ho are Israelites; whose the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the law-giving, and the service, and the promises;

que son israelitas, de los cuales son la adopción, la gloria, el pacto, la promulgación de la Ley, el culto y las promesas.

5 w hose the fathers; and of whom, as according to flesh, the Christ, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

A ellos también pertenecen los patriarcas, de los cuales, según la carne, vino Cristo, el cual es Dios sobre todas las cosas, bendito por los siglos. Amén.

6 N ot however as though the word of God had failed; for not all Israel which of Israel;

No que la palabra de Dios haya fallado, porque no todos los que descienden de Israel son israelitas,

7 n or because they are seed of Abraham all children: but, In Isaac shall a seed be called to thee.

ni por ser descendientes de Abraham, son todos hijos suyos, sino: «En Isaac te será llamada descendencia.»

8 T hat is, the children of the flesh, these not the children of God; but the children of the promise are reckoned as seed.

Esto es: no son hijos de Dios los hijos según la carne, sino que son contados como descendencia los hijos según la promesa,

9 F or this word of promise, According to this time I will come, and there shall be a son to Sarah.

pues la palabra de la promesa es ésta: «Por este tiempo vendré y Sara tendrá un hijo.»

10 A nd not only, but Rebecca having conceived by one, Isaac our father,

Pero no sólo esto, pues también Rebeca concibió de un solo hombre, de Isaac nuestro padre.

11 i ndeed being not yet born, or having done anything good or worthless (that the purpose of God according to election might abide, not of works, but of him that calls),

No habían aún nacido, ni habían hecho aún ni bien ni mal (para que el propósito de Dios conforme a la elección permaneciera, no por las obras sino por el que llama),

12 i t was said to her, The greater shall serve the less:

cuando Dios le dijo a Rebeca: «El mayor servirá al menor.»

13 a ccording as it is written, I have loved Jacob, and I have hated Esau.

Como está escrito: «A Jacob amé, mas a Esaú aborrecí.»

14 W hat shall we say then? unrighteousness with God? Far be the thought.

¿Qué, pues, diremos? ¿Que hay injusticia en Dios? ¡De ninguna manera!,

15 F or he says to Moses, I will shew mercy to whom I will shew mercy, and I will feel compassion for whom I will feel compassion.

pues a Moisés dice: «Tendré misericordia del que yo tenga misericordia y me compadeceré del que yo me compadezca.»

16 S o then not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shews mercy.

Así que no depende del que quiere, ni del que corre, sino de Dios que tiene misericordia,

17 F or the scripture says to Pharaoh, For this very thing I have raised thee up from amongst, that I might thus shew in thee my power, and so that my name should be declared in all the earth.

porque la Escritura dice al faraón: «Para esto mismo te he levantado, para mostrar en ti mi poder y para que mi nombre sea anunciado por toda la tierra.»

18 S o then, to whom he will he shews mercy, and whom he will he hardens.

De manera que de quien quiere, tiene misericordia, y al que quiere endurecer, endurece.

19 T hou wilt say to me then, Why does he yet find fault? for who resists his purpose?

Pero me dirás: «¿Por qué, pues, inculpa? ¿Quién ha resistido a su voluntad?»

20 A ye, but thou, O man, who art thou that answerest again to God? Shall the thing formed say to him that has formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?

Pero tú, hombre, ¿quién eres, para que alterques con Dios? ¿Dirá el vaso de barro al que lo formó: «Por qué me has hecho así»?

21 O r has not the potter authority over the clay, out of the same lump to make one vessel to honour, and another to dishonour?

¿Acaso no tiene potestad el alfarero sobre el barro para hacer de la misma masa un vaso para honra y otro para deshonra?

22 A nd if God, minded to shew his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much long-suffering vessels of wrath fitted for destruction;

¿Y qué, si Dios, queriendo mostrar su ira y hacer notorio su poder, soportó con mucha paciencia los vasos de ira preparados para destrucción?

23 a nd that he might make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he had before prepared for glory,

Él, para hacer notorias las riquezas de su gloria, las mostró para con los vasos de misericordia que había preparado de antemano para gloria.

24 u s, whom he has also called, not only from amongst Jews, but also from amongst nations?

A estos también ha llamado, es decir, a nosotros, no sólo de los judíos, sino también de los gentiles.

25 A s he says also in Hosea, I will call not-my-people My people; and the-not-beloved Beloved.

Como también en Oseas dice: «Llamaré pueblo mío al que no era mi pueblo, y a la no amada, amada.

26 A nd it shall be, in the place where it was said to them, Ye not my people, there shall they be called Sons of living God.

Y en el lugar donde se les dijo: “Vosotros no sois pueblo mío”, allí serán llamados “hijos del Dios viviente”.»

27 B ut Esaias cries concerning Israel, Should the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, the remnant shall be saved:

También Isaías proclama acerca de Israel: «Aunque el número de los hijos de Israel fuera como la arena del mar, tan sólo el remanente será salvo,

28 f or is bringing the matter to an end, and short in righteousness; because] a cutting short of the matter will Lord accomplish upon the earth.

porque el Señor ejecutará su sentencia sobre la tierra con justicia y prontitud.»

29 A nd according as Esaias said before, Unless Lord of hosts had left us a seed, we had been as Sodom, and made like even as Gomorrha.

Y como antes dijo Isaías: «Si el Señor de los ejércitos no nos hubiera dejado descendencia, como Sodoma habríamos venido a ser, y a Gomorra seríamos semejantes.» La justicia que es por fe

30 W hat then shall we say? That nations, who did not follow after righteousness, have attained righteousness, but righteousness that is on the principle of faith.

¿Qué, pues, diremos? Que los gentiles, que no iban tras la justicia, han alcanzado la justicia, es decir, la justicia que es por fe;

31 B ut Israel, pursuing after a law of righteousness, has not attained to law.

mientras Israel, que iba tras una ley de justicia, no la alcanzó.

32 W herefore? Because not on the principle of faith, but as of works. They have stumbled at the stumblingstone,

¿Por qué? Porque iban tras ella no por fe, sino dependiendo de las obras de la Ley, de modo que tropezaron en la piedra de tropiezo,

33 a ccording as it is written, Behold, I place in Zion a stone of stumbling and rock of offence: and he that believes on him shall not be ashamed.

como está escrito: «He aquí pongo en Sión piedra de tropiezo y roca de caída; y el que crea en él, no será defraudado.»
