1 A nd Jethro the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that God had done to Moses, and to Israel his people; that Jehovah had brought Israel out of Egypt.

Oyó Jetro, sacerdote de Madián, suegro de Moisés, todas las cosas que Dios había hecho con Moisés y con Israel, su pueblo, y cómo Jehová había sacado a Israel de Egipto.

2 A nd Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her back,

Entonces tomó Jetro, suegro de Moisés, a Séfora, la mujer de Moisés, después que él la envió,

3 a nd her two sons, of whom the name of the one was Gershom—for he said, I have been a sojourner in a foreign land,

y a sus dos hijos; el uno se llamaba Gersón, porque dijo: «Forastero he sido en tierra ajena»;

4 — and the name of the other, Eliezer—For the God of my father has been my help, and has delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.

y el otro se llamaba Eliezer, porque dijo: «El Dios de mi padre me ayudó y me libró de la espada del faraón.»

5 A nd Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came to Moses with his sons and his wife into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mountain of God.

Cuando Jetro, el suegro de Moisés, llegó con los hijos y la mujer de éste junto al monte de Dios en el desierto, donde estaba acampado Moisés,

6 A nd he sent word to Moses: I, thy father-in-law Jethro, am come to thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.

le dijo: —Yo, tu suegro Jetro, vengo a ti, con tu mujer y sus dos hijos.

7 A nd Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other their welfare, and went into the tent.

Moisés salió a recibir a su suegro, se inclinó y lo besó. Se preguntaron el uno al otro cómo estaban, y entraron a la tienda.

8 A nd Moses told his father-in-law all that Jehovah had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake; all the trouble that had befallen them on the way, and Jehovah had delivered them.

Moisés contó a su suegro todas las cosas que Jehová había hecho al faraón y a los egipcios por amor de Israel, todo el trabajo que habían pasado en el camino y cómo los había librado Jehová.

9 A nd Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness that Jehovah had done to Israel; that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

Se alegró Jetro de todo el bien que Jehová había hecho a Israel al haberlo librado de manos de los egipcios.

10 A nd Jethro said, Blessed be Jehovah, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

Y Jetro dijo: —Bendito sea Jehová, que os libró de manos de los egipcios y de manos del faraón. Él ha librado al pueblo de manos de los egipcios.

11 N ow I know that Jehovah is greater than all gods; for in the thing in which they acted haughtily above them.

Ahora conozco que Jehová es más grande que todos los dioses, porque en lo que se ensoberbecieron prevaleció contra ellos.

12 A nd Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt-offering and sacrifices for God; and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law in the presence of God.

Luego tomó Jetro, suegro de Moisés, holocaustos y sacrificios para Dios; y Aarón y todos los ancianos de Israel fueron a comer con el suegro de Moisés delante de Dios. Nombramiento de jueces

13 A nd it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood by Moses from the morning to the evening.

Aconteció que al día siguiente se sentó Moisés a juzgar al pueblo; y el pueblo estuvo delante de Moisés desde la mañana hasta la tarde.

14 A nd Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did with the people, and said, What is this thing which thou art doing with the people? why dost thou sit alone, and all the people are standing by thee from morning to evening?

Al ver el suegro de Moisés todo lo que él hacía por el pueblo, le preguntó: —¿Qué es esto que haces tú con el pueblo? ¿Por qué te sientas tú solo, mientras todo el pueblo permanece delante de ti desde la mañana hasta la tarde?

15 A nd Moses said to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to enquire of God.

Moisés respondió a su suegro: —Porque el pueblo viene a mí para consultar a Dios.

16 W hen they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between one and another; and I make known the statutes of God, and his laws.

Cuando tienen algún pleito, vienen a mí; yo juzgo entre el uno y el otro, y declaro los preceptos de Dios y sus leyes.

17 A nd Moses' father-in-law said to him, The thing that thou art doing is not good.

Entonces el suegro de Moisés le dijo: —No está bien lo que haces.

18 T hou wilt be quite exhausted, both thou and this people that is with thee; for the thing is too heavy for thee: thou canst not perform it alone.

Desfallecerás del todo, tú y también este pueblo que está contigo, porque el trabajo es demasiado pesado para ti y no podrás hacerlo tú solo.

19 H earken now to my voice: I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee. Be thou for the people with God, and bring the matters before God;

Oye ahora mi voz: yo te aconsejaré y Dios estará contigo. Preséntate tú por el pueblo delante de Dios, y somete tú los asuntos a Dios.

20 a nd teach them the statutes and the laws, and make known to them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.

Enséñales los preceptos y las leyes, muéstrales el camino por donde deben andar y lo que han de hacer.

21 B ut do thou provide among all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place over them, chiefs of thousands, chiefs of hundreds, chiefs of fifties, and chiefs of tens,

Además escoge tú de entre todo el pueblo a hombres virtuosos, temerosos de Dios, hombres veraces, que aborrezcan la avaricia, y ponlos sobre el pueblo como jefes de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez.

22 t hat they may judge the people at all times; and it shall be they shall bring to thee every great matter, and that they shall judge every small matter, and they shall lighten on thee, and they shall bear with thee.

Ellos juzgarán al pueblo en todo tiempo; todo asunto grave lo traerán a ti, y ellos juzgarán todo asunto pequeño. Así se aliviará tu carga, pues ellos la llevarán contigo.

23 I f thou do this thing, and God command thee, thou wilt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

Si esto haces, y Dios te lo manda, tú podrás sostenerte, y también todo este pueblo irá en paz a su lugar.

24 A nd Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.

Oyó Moisés la voz de su suegro, e hizo todo lo que él le dijo.

25 A nd Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, chiefs of thousands, chiefs of hundreds, chiefs of fifties, and chiefs of tens.

Escogió Moisés hombres de virtud de entre todo Israel, y los puso sobre el pueblo como jefes sobre mil, sobre cien, sobre cincuenta y sobre diez,

26 A nd they judged the people at all times: the hard matters they brought to Moses, but every small matter they judged.

los cuales juzgaban al pueblo en todo tiempo. Los asuntos difíciles los traían a Moisés, y ellos juzgaban todo asunto pequeño.

27 A nd Moses sent away his father-in-law, and he departed into his land.

Luego Moisés despidió a su suegro, y éste se fue a su tierra.
