1 a ll the people gathered together as one man to the open place that was before the water-gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Jehovah had commanded Israel.

Entonces se juntó todo el pueblo como un solo hombre en la plaza que está delante de la puerta de las Aguas, y dijeron al escriba Esdras que trajera el libro de la ley de Moisés, la cual Jehová había dado a Israel.

2 A nd Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation, both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.

El primer día del mes séptimo, el sacerdote Esdras trajo la Ley delante de la congregación, así de hombres como de mujeres y de todos los que podían entender.

3 A nd he read in it before the open place that was before the water-gate from the morning until midday, in presence of the men and the women, and those that could understand. And the ears of all the people were to the book of the law.

Desde el alba hasta el mediodía, leyó en el libro delante de la plaza que está delante de la puerta de las Aguas, en presencia de hombres y mujeres y de todos los que podían entender; y los oídos de todo el pueblo estaban atentos al libro de la Ley.

4 A nd Ezra the scribe stood upon a high stage of wood, which they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkijah, and Maaseiah on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddana, Zechariah, Meshullam.

Y el escriba Esdras estaba sobre un estrado de madera que habían levantado para esa ocasión, y junto a él estaban, a su derecha, Matatías, Sema, Anías, Urías, Hilcías y Maasías; y a su mano izquierda, Pedaías, Misael, Malquías, Hasum, Hasbadana, Zacarías y Mesulam.

5 A nd Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up.

Abrió, pues, Esdras el libro ante los ojos de todo el pueblo —pues estaba más alto que todo el pueblo—; y cuando lo abrió, el pueblo entero estuvo atento.

6 A nd Ezra blessed Jehovah, the great God; and all the people answered, Amen, Amen! with lifting up of their hands; and they bowed their heads, and worshipped Jehovah with their faces to the ground.

Bendijo entonces Esdras a Jehová, Dios grande. Y todo el pueblo, alzando sus manos, respondió: «¡Amén! ¡Amén!»; y se humillaron, adorando a Jehová rostro en tierra.

7 A nd Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law; and the people in their place.

Los levitas Jesúa, Bani, Serebías, Jamín, Acub, Sabetai, Hodías, Maasías, Kelita, Azarías, Jozabed, Hanán y Pelaía, hacían entender al pueblo la Ley, mientras el pueblo se mantenía atento en su lugar.

8 A nd they read in the law of God distinctly out of the book, and gave the sense, and caused to understand the reading.

Y leían claramente en el libro de la ley de Dios, y explicaban su sentido, de modo que entendieran la lectura.

9 A nd Nehemiah, that is, the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that explained to the people, said to all the people, This day is holy to Jehovah your God: mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law.

Entonces el gobernador Nehemías, el sacerdote y escriba Esdras y los levitas que hacían entender al pueblo dijeron a todo el pueblo: «Hoy es día consagrado a Jehová, nuestro Dios; no os entristezcáis ni lloréis»; pues todo el pueblo lloraba oyendo las palabras de la Ley.

10 A nd he said to them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions to them for whom nothing is prepared; for the day is holy to our Lord; and be not grieved, for the joy of Jehovah is your strength.

Luego les dijo: «Id, comed alimentos grasos, bebed vino dulce y enviad porciones a los que no tienen nada preparado; porque éste es día consagrado a nuestro Señor. No os entristezcáis, porque el gozo de Jehová es vuestra fuerza.»

11 A nd the Levites quieted all the people, saying, Be still! for the day is holy; neither be grieved.

También los levitas calmaban a todo el pueblo, diciendo: «Callad, porque es día santo; no os entristezcáis.»

12 A nd all the people went their way, to eat and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great rejoicing. For they had understood the words that were declared to them.

Y todo el pueblo se fue a comer y a beber, a obsequiar porciones y a gozar de gran alegría, porque habían entendido las palabras que les habían enseñado.

13 A nd on the second day were gathered together the chief fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, to Ezra the scribe, even to gain wisdom as to the words of the law.

Al día siguiente, se reunieron los cabezas de familia de todo el pueblo, sacerdotes y levitas, junto al escriba Esdras, para estudiar las palabras de la Ley.

14 A nd they found written in the law which Jehovah had commanded through Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month,

Y hallaron escrito en la ley que Jehová había mandado por medio de Moisés, que habitaran los hijos de Israel en tabernáculos en la fiesta solemne del mes séptimo;

15 a nd that they should publish and proclaim through all their cities, and at Jerusalem, saying, Go forth to the mount, and fetch olive-branches, and wild olive-branches, and myrtle-branches, and palm-branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.

y que hicieran saber e hicieran pregonar por todas sus ciudades y por Jerusalén, diciendo: «Salid al monte y traed ramas de olivo, de olivo silvestre, de arrayán, de palmeras y de todo árbol frondoso, para hacer tabernáculos, como está escrito.»

16 A nd the people went forth and brought, and made themselves booths, everyone upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the open space of the water-gate, and in the open space of the gate of Ephraim.

Salió, pues, el pueblo, y trajeron ramas e hicieron tabernáculos, cada uno sobre su terrado, en sus patios, en los patios de la casa de Dios, en la plaza de la puerta de las Aguas y en la plaza de la puerta de Efraín.

17 A nd all the congregation of them that had come back from the captivity made booths, and dwelt in the booths. For since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun until that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness.

Toda la congregación que volvió de la cautividad hizo tabernáculos, y en tabernáculos habitó; porque desde los días de Josué hijo de Nun hasta aquel día, no habían hecho así los hijos de Israel. Y hubo gran alegría.

18 A lso day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they observed the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance.

Leyó Esdras el libro de la ley de Dios cada día, desde el primer día hasta el último; hicieron la fiesta solemne por siete días, y el octavo día fue de solemne asamblea, según el rito.
