1 A nd Job answered and said,

Job prit la parole et dit:

2 H ow long will ye vex my soul, and crush me with words?

Jusques à quand affligerez-vous mon âme, Et m'écraserez-vous de vos discours?

3 T hese ten times have ye reproached me; ye are not ashamed to stupefy me.

Voilà dix fois que vous m'outragez; N'avez-vous pas honte de m'étourdir ainsi?

4 A nd be it I have erred, mine error remaineth with myself.

Si réellement j'ai péché, Seul j'en suis responsable.

5 I f indeed ye will magnify yourselves against me, and prove against me my reproach,

Pensez-vous me traiter avec hauteur? Pensez-vous démontrer que je suis coupable?

6 K now now that +God hath overthrown me, and hath surrounded me with his net.

Sachez alors que c'est Dieu qui me poursuit, Et qui m'enveloppe de son filet.

7 B ehold, I cry out of wrong, and I am not heard; I cry aloud, but there is no judgment.

Voici, je crie à la violence, et nul ne répond; J'implore justice, et point de justice!

8 H e hath hedged up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set darkness in my paths.

Il m'a fermé toute issue, et je ne puis passer; Il a répandu des ténèbres sur mes sentiers.

9 H e hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head.

Il m'a dépouillé de ma gloire, Il a enlevé la couronne de ma tête.

10 H e breaketh me down on every side, and I am gone; and my hope hath he torn up as a tree.

Il m'a brisé de toutes parts, et je m'en vais; Il a arraché mon espérance comme un arbre.

11 A nd he hath kindled his anger against me, and hath counted me unto him as one of his enemies.

Il s'est enflammé de colère contre moi, Il m'a traité comme l'un de ses ennemis.

12 H is troops have come together and cast up their way against me, and have encamped round about my tent.

Ses troupes se sont de concert mises en marche, Elles se sont frayé leur chemin jusqu'à moi, Elles ont campées autour de ma tente.

13 H e hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are quite estranged from me.

Il a éloigné de moi mes frères, Et mes amis se sont détournés de moi;

14 M y kinsfolk have failed, and my known friends have forgotten me.

Je suis abandonné de mes proches, Je suis oublié de mes intimes.

15 T he sojourners in my house and my maids count me as a stranger; I am an alien in their sight.

Je suis un étranger pour mes serviteurs et mes servantes, Je ne suis plus à leurs yeux qu'un inconnu.

16 I called my servant, and he answered not; I entreated him with my mouth.

J'appelle mon serviteur, et il ne répond pas; Je le supplie de ma bouche, et c'est en vain.

17 M y breath is strange to my wife, and my entreaties to the children of my womb.

Mon humeur est à charge à ma femme, Et ma plainte aux fils de mes entrailles.

18 E ven young children despise me; I rise up, and they speak against me.

Je suis méprisé même par des enfants; Si je me lève, je reçois leurs insultes.

19 A ll my intimate friends abhor me, and they whom I loved are turned against me.

Ceux que j'avais pour confidents m'ont en horreur, Ceux que j'aimais se sont tournés contre moi.

20 M y bones cleave to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.

Mes os sont attachés à ma peau et à ma chair; Il ne me reste que la peau des dents.

21 H ave pity upon me, have pity upon me, ye my friends; for the hand of +God hath touched me.

Ayez pitié, ayez pitié de moi, vous, mes amis! Car la main de Dieu m'a frappé.

22 W hy do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?

Pourquoi me poursuivre comme Dieu me poursuit? Pourquoi vous montrer insatiables de ma chair?

23 O h would that my words were written! oh that they were inscribed in a book!

Oh! je voudrais que mes paroles fussent écrites, Qu'elles fussent écrites dans un livre;

24 T hat with an iron style and lead they were graven in the rock for ever!

Je voudrais qu'avec un burin de fer et avec du plomb Elles fussent pour toujours gravées dans le roc...

25 A nd me, I know that my Redeemer liveth, and the Last, he shall stand upon the earth;

Mais je sais que mon Rédempteur est vivant, Et qu'il se lèvera le dernier sur la terre.

26 A nd after my skin this shall be destroyed, yet from out of my flesh shall I see +God;

Quand ma peau sera détruite, il se lèvera; Quand je n'aurai plus de chair, je verrai Dieu.

27 W hom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another:—my reins are consumed within me.

Je le verrai, et il me sera favorable; Mes yeux le verront, et non ceux d'un autre; Mon âme languit d'attente au dedans de moi.

28 I f ye say, How shall we persecute him? when the root of the matter is found in me,

Vous direz alors: Pourquoi le poursuivions-nous? Car la justice de ma cause sera reconnue.

29 B e ye yourselves afraid of the sword! for the sword is fury against misdeeds, that ye may know there is a judgment.

Craignez pour vous le glaive: Les châtiments par le glaive sont terribles! Et sachez qu'il y a un jugement.
