1 A doni-Ţedek, regele Ierusalimului, a auzit că Iosua capturase cetatea Ai şi o distrusese de tot, că-i făcuse cetăţii Ai şi regelui ei la fel cum îi făcuse Ierihonului şi regelui lui şi că locuitorii Ghivonului încheiaseră pace cu Israel şi erau în mijlocul lor.

Now it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

2 A tunci a fost cuprins de frică, fiindcă Ghivon era o cetate mare, asemenea unei cetăţi regale. Era mai mare chiar decât Ai şi toţi bărbaţii ei erau războinici.

that they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

3 A doni-Ţedek, regele Ierusalimului, le-a trimis un mesaj lui Hoham, regele Hebronului, lui Piram, regele Iarmutului, lui Iafia, regele Lachişului şi lui Debir, regele Eglonului, spunându-le:

Wherefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

4 „ Veniţi şi ajutaţi-mă să atac Ghivonul, fiindcă a făcut pace cu Iosua şi cu israeliţii.“

Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

5 C ei cinci regi ai amoriţilor – regele Ierusalimului, regele Hebronului, regele Iarmutului, regele Lachişului şi regele Eglonului – şi-au unit forţele şi, împreună cu toată oştirea lor, şi-au aşezat tabăra lângă Ghivon şi au început lupta împotriva lui.

Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

6 G hivoniţii au apelat atunci la Iosua, aflat în tabăra de la Ghilgal: „Nu-i părăsi pe slujitorii tăi!“ au trimis ei să i se spună lui Iosua. „Grăbeşte-te şi salvează-ne! Ajută-ne, căci toţi regii amoriţi care locuiesc în regiunea muntoasă şi-au unit forţele împotriva noastră!“

And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.

7 I osua a pornit din Ghilgal în fruntea întregii oştiri şi a tuturor vitejilor.

So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

8 „ Nu te teme de ei, i-a spus Domnul lui Iosua, căci i-am dat în mâna ta şi nici unul nu-ţi va putea sta împotrivă!“

And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

9 I osua i-a atacat pe neaşteptate, după ce a mărşăluit toată noaptea de la Ghilgal.

Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night.

10 D omnul i-a făcut să intre în panică înaintea lui Israel, care i-a învins şi a reuşit astfel o mare victorie la Ghivon. Israeliţii i-au urmărit pe drumul care urcă la Bet-Horon, nimicindu-i pe drum până la Azeka şi pâna la Makkeda.

And the Lord discomfited them before Israel, and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Beth-horon, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

11 Î n timp ce fugeau dinaintea lui Israel, pe drumul care cobora de la Bet-Horon spre Azeka, Domnul a făcut să cadă din cer asupra lor pietre mari de grindină şi ei au murit. Cei care au fost nimiciţi de pietrele grindinei au fost în număr mai mare decât cei ucişi cu sabia de către israeliţi.

And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that the Lord cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

12 Î n ziua în care Domnul i-a dat pe amoriţi în mâna lui Israel, Iosua s-a adresat Domnului în prezenţa lui Israel: „Soare, rămâi nemişcat deasupra Ghivonului şi lună, rămâi peste valea Aialon.“

Then spake Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

13 S oarele a rămas nemişcat, iar luna s-a oprit până când poporul s-a răzbunat pe duşmanii lui. Nu este scris lucrul acesta şi în Cartea lui Iaşar ? Soarele a rămas nemişcat în mijlocul cerului şi nu s-a grăbit să apună timp de aproape o zi.

And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

14 N u a mai fost nici o zi ca aceea, nici înainte, nici după, o zi în care Domnul să fi ascultat glasul unui om; fiindcă Domnul lupta pentru Israel.

And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the Lord hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the Lord fought for Israel.

15 A poi Iosua şi oştirea lui Israel s-au întors în tabăra de la Ghilgal.

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

16 C ei cinci regi însă fugiseră şi se ascunseseră într-o peşteră la Makkeda.

But these five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.

17 C ând i s-a spus lui Iosua că cei cinci regi au fost găsiţi ascunşi într-o peşteră la Makkeda,

And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah.

18 a cesta a zis: „Rostogoliţi nişte pietre mari la gura peşterii şi puneţi acolo nişte oameni ca să-i păzească!

And Joshua said, Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:

19 V oi însă nu vă opriţi, ci continuaţi să-i urmăriţi pe duşmanii voştri şi să-i loviţi din urmă până îi veţi nimici! Nu-i lăsaţi să intre în cetăţile lor, căci Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, a hotărât să îi dea în mâna voastră.“

and stay ye not, but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the Lord your God hath delivered them into your hand.

20 I osua şi israeliţii au reuşit nimicirea lor, lovindu-i până i-au distrus de tot. Au scăpat doar câţiva, aceştia adăpostindu-se în cetăţile fortificate.

And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities.

21 Î ntreaga oştire s-a întors apoi în siguranţă la Iosua, în tabăra de la Makkeda şi nimeni nu a îndrăznit să rostească nici măcar un cuvânt împotriva israeliţilor.

And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

22 I osua a zis atunci: „Eliberaţi intrarea peşterii şi scoateţi-i afară la mine pe cei cinci regi dinăuntrul ei!“

Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave.

23 E i au făcut întocmai: i-au scos afară din peşteră pe cei cinci regi, şi anume pe regele Ierusalimului, pe regele Hebronului, pe regele Iarmutului, pe regele Lachişului şi pe regele Eglonului.

And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.

24 D upă ce au fost aduşi aceşti regi înaintea lui Iosua, acesta a convocat oştirea lui Israel şi le-a zis conducătorilor oştirii care fuseseră cu el la luptă: „Apropiaţi-vă şi puneţi-vă picioarele pe gâturile acestor regi!“ Ei s-au apropiat şi şi-au pus picioarele pe gâturile lor.

And it came to pass, when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

25 I osua le-a mai zis: „Nu vă temeţi şi nu vă descurajaţi! Fiţi tari şi curajoşi, fiindcă astfel va face Domnul tuturor duşmanilor voştri împotriva cărora veţi lupta.“

And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the Lord do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

26 A poi Iosua i-a lovit şi i-a omorât, după care i-a spânzurat de cinci copaci şi i-a lăsat atârnaţi acolo până seara.

And afterward Joshua smote them, and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

27 L a apusul soarelui Iosua a poruncit să fie coborâţi din copaci şi să fie aruncaţi în peştera în care se ascunseseră. La gura peşterii au pus nişte pietre mari care au rămas acolo până în ziua de azi.

And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.

28 Î n aceeaşi zi, Iosua a cucerit Makkeda şi a trecut-o prin ascuţişul sabiei. L-a ucis pe regele ei şi i-a nimicit cu desăvârşire pe toţi oamenii care erau în ea, nelăsând nici un supravieţuitor. I-a făcut regelui din Makkeda la fel cum îi făcuse regelui din Ierihon.

And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.

29 A poi, din Makkeda, Iosua împreună cu toată oştirea au pornit spre Libna şi au început lupta împotriva Libnei.

Then Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:

30 D omnul, de asemenea, a dat-o în mâna lui Israel împreună cu regele ei. Israel a trecut cetatea şi pe oamenii care erau în ea prin ascuţişul sabiei, nelăsând nici un supravieţuitor şi i-a făcut regelui ei la fel cum îi făcuse regelui Ierihonului.

and the Lord delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.

31 D in Libna, Iosua împreună cu toată oştirea lui Israel au pornit spre Lachiş; şi-au aşezat tabăra în apropierea cetăţii şi au început lupta împotriva ei.

And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:

32 D omnul a dat cetatea Lachiş în mâna lui Israel. El a capturat-o în cea de-a doua zi a asediului, trecând prin ascuţişul sabiei pe toţi oamenii care se aflau în ea, la fel cum făcuse şi în Libna.

and the Lord delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

33 Î ntre timp Horam, regele Ghezerului, venise în ajutorul cetăţii Lachiş, dar Iosua l-a învins, pe el şi oştirea lui, fără să lase vreun supravieţuitor.

Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

34 D in Lachiş, Iosua împreună cu toată oştirea lui Israel au pornit spre Eglon; şi-au aşezat tabăra în apropierea cetăţii şi au început lupta împotriva ei.

And from Lachish Joshua passed unto Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they encamped against it, and fought against it:

35 A u capturat cetatea în aceeaşi zi, trecând-o prin ascuţişul sabiei şi i-au nimicit cu desăvârşire pe toţi oamenii care se aflau în ea, la fel cum făcuseră cu cetatea Lachiş.

and they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

36 D in Eglon, Iosua împreună cu oştirea lui Israel au pornit spre cetatea Hebron şi au început lupta împotriva ei.

And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:

37 A u capturat-o şi au trecut-o prin ascuţişul sabiei împreună cu regele ei, toate satele din împrejurimile ei şi toţi oamenii care se aflau în ea, nelăsând nici un supravieţuitor. Au nimicit cu desăvârşire Hebronul împreună cu toţi oamenii care se aflau în el, la fel cum făcuseră cu Eglonul.

and they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but destroyed it utterly, and all the souls that were therein.

38 A poi Iosua împreună cu oştirea lui Israel s-au întors înspre cetatea Debir şi au început lupta împotriva ei.

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir; and fought against it:

39 A u capturat-o şi au trecut-o prin ascuţişul sabiei împreună cu regele ei şi toate satele din împrejurimile ei, nimicind cu desăvârşire pe toţi oamenii care se aflau în ea, nelăsând nici un supravieţuitor. I-au făcut Debirului şi regelui lui aşa cum i-au făcut Hebronului şi aşa cum i-au făcut Libnei şi regelui ei.

and he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.

40 I osua i-a învins astfel pe toţi regii din întreaga regiune: din zona muntoasă, din Neghev, din zona deluroasă şi de la poalele munţilor. Nu a lăsat nici un supravieţuitor, nimicind întreaga populaţie, aşa cum poruncise Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel.

So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel commanded.

41 I osua a cucerit de la Kadeş-Barnea până la Gaza şi întreaga regiune Goşen până la Ghivon.

And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.

42 I osua i-a învins pe toţi aceşti regi şi a cucerit regatele lor într-o singură campanie, deoarece Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, lupta pentru Israel.

And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.

43 Î n cele din urmă, Iosua şi oştirea lui Israel s-au reîntors în tabăra de la Ghilgal.

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
