1 C uvântul Domnului a venit la mine şi mi-a zis:

The word of the Lord came unto me again, saying,

2 „ De ce continuaţi să folosiţi această zicală în ţara lui Israel, şi anume: «Părinţii au mâncat struguri acri, şi copiilor li s-au strepezit dinţii»?

What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge?

3 V iu sunt Eu, zice Stăpânul Domn, că nu veţi mai folosi această zicală în Israel!

As I live, saith the Lord God, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.

4 I ată că toate sufletele sunt ale Mele. Atât sufletul tatălui, cât şi sufletul fiului sunt ale Mele. Sufletul care păcătuieşte, acela va muri!

Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

5 O mul care este drept, care face judecată şi dreptate,

But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,

6 c are nu mănâncă pe munţi, nu-şi ridică ochii spre idolii Casei lui Israel, nu o necinsteşte pe soţia semenului său şi nu se apropie de o femeie în timpul necurăţiei ei,

and hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,

7 c are nu asupreşte pe nimeni, dă înapoi datornicului garanţia, nu comite jaf, dă din pâinea lui celui flămând şi îl îmbracă cu o haină pe cel gol,

and hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;

8 c are nu împrumută cu dobândă şi nu ia camătă de la nimeni, care îşi fereşte mâna de nelegiuire şi judecă după adevăr între om şi om,

he that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,

9 c are urmează hotărârile Mele şi păzeşte rânduielile Mele, lucrând cu credincioşie, un astfel de om drept în mod sigur va trăi, zice Stăpânul Domn.

hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord God.

10 D acă unui astfel de om i se naşte un fiu violent, care varsă sânge sau face oricare din lucrurile acestea

If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,

11 ş i nu face nici unul din lucrurile bune, ci mănâncă pe munţi, o necinsteşte pe soţia semenului său,

and that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour’s wife,

12 î l asupreşte pe cel sărac şi pe cel nevoiaş, comite jaf, nu dă înapoi garanţia, îşi ridică ochii spre idoli, săvârşeşte urâciuni,

hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,

13 d ă împrumut cu dobândă şi ia camătă, oare va trăi un asemenea om ? Nu, nu va trăi! Pentru că a săvârşit toate aceste urâciuni, va muri cu siguranţă, iar sângele lui va cădea asupra capului său.

hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.

14 D ar să zicem că şi lui i se naşte un fiu. Acesta vede toate păcatele pe care le săvârşeşte tatăl său, dar, deşi le vede, totuşi nu le face.

Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like,

15 E l nu mănâncă pe munţi, nu-şi ridică ochii spre idolii Casei lui Israel, nu o necinsteşte pe soţia semenului său,

that hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife,

16 n u asupreşte pe nimeni, nu reţine garanţia, nu comite jaf, dă din pâinea lui celui flămând şi îl îmbracă cu o haină pe cel gol.

neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,

17 E l îşi fereşte mâna de nelegiuire, nu ia dobândă de pe împrumuturi, împlineşte rânduielile Mele şi umblă după hotărârile Mele. Un astfel de om nu va muri din cauza nelegiuirii tatălui său, ci, în mod sigur, va trăi!

that hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.

18 D ar tatăl său, care s-a îndeletnicit cu asuprirea, care l-a tâlhărit pe fratele său şi care a făcut ce nu este bine în poporul său, omul acela va muri din cauza nelegiuirii sale.

As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.

19 V oi însă ziceţi: «De ce să nu fie responsabil şi fiul de nelegiuirea tatălui său?» Pentru că fiul a făcut judecată şi dreptate şi pentru că a păzit toate hotărârile Mele şi le-a împlinit! De aceea, în mod sigur el va trăi!

Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.

20 S ufletul care păcătuieşte, acela va muri! Fiul nu va fi responsabil de nelegiuirea tatălui şi nici tatăl de nelegiuirea fiului. După cum dreptatea celui drept îi va fi de folos doar lui, tot aşa răutatea celui rău se va răsfrânge doar asupra lui.

The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

21 D ar dacă cel rău se întoarce de la toate păcatele pe care le-a săvârşit, păzeşte toate hotărârile Mele şi face judecată şi dreptate, în mod sigur el va trăi şi nu va muri.

But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

22 T oate fărădelegile pe care le-a săvârşit nu i se vor mai aminti! El va trăi din pricina dreptăţii pe care a înfăptuit-o.

All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.

23 D oresc Eu moartea celui rău? zice Stăpânul Domn. Oare nu doresc mai degrabă ca el să se întoarcă de pe căile lui şi să trăiască?

Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

24 T ot astfel, dacă cel drept se întoarce de la dreptatea lui şi săvârşeşte nedreptate, asemenea tuturor urâciunilor săvârşite de cel rău, va trăi el oare? Toată dreptatea pe care a înfăptuit-o nu i se va mai aminti. Din cauza necredincioşiei de care a dat dovadă şi din cauza păcatelor pe care le-a săvârşit, el va muri.

But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.

25 T otuşi, voi ziceţi: «Calea Stăpânului nu este dreaptă!» Ascultă, casă a lui Israel! Calea Mea nu este dreaptă? Oare nu căile voastre sunt cele nedrepte?

Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?

26 D acă cel drept se întoarce de la dreptatea lui şi săvârşeşte nedreptate, el va muri din pricina aceasta; va muri din pricina nedreptăţii pe care a săvârşit-o.

When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.

27 T ot astfel, dacă cel rău se întoarce de la răutatea în care trăieşte şi face judecată şi dreptate, îşi va salva viaţa.

Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.

28 D acă îşi vede starea şi se întoarce de la toate nelegiuirile pe care le-a săvârşit, va trăi cu siguranţă şi nu va muri.

Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

29 V oi însă, cei din Casa lui Israel, spuneţi: «Calea Stăpânului nu este dreaptă!» Calea Mea nu este dreaptă, casă a lui Israel? Oare nu căile voastre sunt cele nedrepte?

Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?

30 D e aceea vă voi judeca pe fiecare după umbletele voastre, casă a lui Israel, zice Stăpânul Domn. Pocăiţi-vă şi întoarceţi-vă de la toate fărădelegile voastre, pentru ca nelegiuirea să nu vă mai fie o pricină de poticnire!

Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord God. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

31 A runcaţi de la voi toate fărădelegile pe care le-aţi săvârşit şi faceţi-vă rost de o inimă nouă şi de un duh nou! Pentru ce vrei să mori, casă a lui Israel?

Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

32 C ăci Eu nu doresc moartea celui ce moare, zice Stăpânul Domn. Întoarceţi-vă deci şi veţi trăi!“

For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.
