1 C ei din popor şi soţiile lor au avut o mare plângere împotriva fraţilor lor iudei.

And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.

2 E rau unii care spuneau astfel: – Noi, fiii şi fiicele noastre suntem mulţi. Să ni se dea grâne, ca să avem ce mânca şi să putem trăi!

For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live.

3 A lţii ziceau: – Ne punem garanţie ogoarele, viile şi casele, ca să avem grâne în timpul foametei!

Some also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.

4 M ai erau încă unii care ziceau: – A trebuit să împrumutăm argint, dându-ne ogoarele şi viile în schimbul birului imperial.

There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.

5 D eşi suntem carne din carnea fraţilor noştri, iar fiii noştri sunt ca şi fiii lor, iată că suntem pe cale să ne dăm fiii şi fiicele în sclavie. Câteva din fetele noastre au şi fost luate în sclavie. Suntem fără putere, iar ogoarele şi viile noastre aparţin altora!

Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

6 M -am mâniat foarte tare când le-am auzit plângerea şi cuvintele acestea.

And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.

7 D upă ce m-am gândit, i-am mustrat pe nobili şi pe dregători, spunându-le: – Voi împrumutaţi cu dobândă pe fraţii voştri?! Am strâns o mare adunare împotriva lor

Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.

8 ş i le-am zis: – Noi, după puterile noastre, am răscumpărat pe fraţii noştri iudei, care fuseseră vânduţi neamurilor! Iar acum voi vă vindeţi fraţii, ca apoi să ne fie daţi chiar nouă de vânzare? Ei tăceau, neavând ce să răspundă.

And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.

9 – Ce faceţi voi nu este bine, am mai zis eu. N-ar trebui voi să umblaţi în frică de Dumnezeul nostru, ca să nu fiţi de ruşinea neamurilor vrăjmaşe nouă?

Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?

10 A tât eu, cât şi fraţii şi slujitorii mei le-am împrumutat argint şi grâne. Să le iertăm datoria aceasta!

I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury.

11 D aţi-le înapoi astăzi ogoarele, viile, măslinii şi casele, precum şi a suta parte din argintul, din grânele, din mustul şi din uleiul pe care le-aţi cerut de la ei ca dobândă.

Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.

12 – Le vom da înapoi, au răspuns ei, şi nu vom mai cere nimic de la ei! Vom face întocmai precum ai zis. Atunci am chemat preoţii şi i-am pus să jure înaintea lor că vor face precum au promis.

Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.

13 M i-am scuturat mantaua şi am zis: – Aşa să scuture Dumnezeu din familia lui şi din proprietatea lui pe orice om care nu se va ţine de cuvânt! Aşa să fie scuturat şi lăsat fără nimic! – Amin! a răspuns toată adunarea şi L-au lăudat pe Domnul. Poporul a făcut întocmai cum a promis.

Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the Lord. And the people did according to this promise.

14 D in ziua în care am fost numit guvernatorul lor în ţara lui Iuda, adică din al douăzecilea an al domniei împăratului Artaxerxes şi până în al treizeci şi doilea an al domniei sale, deci timp de doisprezece ani, nici eu, nici fraţii mei nu am trăit din veniturile de guvernator.

Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.

15 Î nainte de mine, cei dintâi guvernatori împovărau poporul, luând de la ei pâine şi vin, în afară de cei patruzeci de şecheli de argint. Chiar şi slujitorii lor asupreau poporul. Eu însă nu am făcut aşa, din frică de Dumnezeu.

But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.

16 M -am ocupat de lucrarea de restaurare a acestui zid şi nu mi-am cumpărat ogoare. De altfel toţi slujitorii mei erau adunaţi acolo pentru lucrare.

Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.

17 M ai mult, aveam la masa mea o sută cincizeci de bărbaţi dintre iudei şi dintre dregători, în afară de cei care veneau dintre neamurile dimprejur.

Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us.

18 Î n fiecare zi mi se pregătea un bou, şase oi alese şi păsări, iar la fiecare zece zile se aducea vin din belşug, de toate felurile. Cu toate acestea, eu nu am căutat să primesc plată ca guvernator, căci lucrarea apăsa greu asupra acestui popor.

Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.

19 A du-Ţi aminte de mine, Dumnezeul meu, spre bine, pentru tot ce am făcut pentru acest popor!

Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.
