1 M an, born of woman, is of few days, and full of trouble.

2 H e cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down; and he fleeth as a shadow, and continueth not.

Sale como una flor y es cortado, Y huye como la sombra y no permanece.

3 Y et dost thou open thine eyes upon such a one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

¿Sobre éste abres tus ojos, Y me traes a juicio contigo?

4 W ho can bring a clean out of the unclean? Not one!

¿Quién hará limpio a lo inmundo? Nadie.

5 I f his days are determined, if the number of his months is with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds which he must not pass,

Ciertamente sus días están determinados, Y el número de sus meses está cerca de ti; Le pusiste límites, de los cuales no pasará.

6 L ook away from him; and let him rest, till he accomplish, as a hireling, his day.

Si tú lo abandonares, él dejará de ser; Entre tanto deseará, como el jornalero, su día.

7 F or there is hope for a tree: if it be cut down, it will sprout again, and its tender branch will not cease;

Porque si el árbol fuere cortado, aún queda de él esperanza; Retoñará aún, y sus renuevos no faltarán.

8 T hough its root grow old in the earth, and its stock die in the ground,

Si se envejeciere en la tierra su raíz, Y su tronco fuere muerto en el polvo,

9 Y et through the scent of water it will bud, and put forth boughs like a young plant.

Al percibir el agua reverdecerá, Y hará copa como planta nueva.

10 B ut a man dieth, and is prostrate; yea, man expireth, and where is he?

Mas el hombre morirá, y será cortado; Perecerá el hombre, ¿y dónde estará él?

11 T he waters recede from the lake, and the river wasteth and drieth up:

Como las aguas se van del mar, Y el río se agota y se seca,

12 S o man lieth down, and riseth not again; till the heavens be no more, they do not awake, nor are raised out of their sleep.

Así el hombre yace y no vuelve a levantarse; Hasta que no haya cielo, no despertarán, Ni se levantarán de su sueño.

13 O h that thou wouldest hide me in Sheol, that thou wouldest keep me secret until thine anger be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me,—

Oh, quién me diera que me escondieses en el Seol, Que me encubrieses hasta apaciguarse tu ira, Que me pusieses plazo, y de mí te acordaras!

14 ( If a man die, shall he live ?) all the days of my time of toil would I wait, till my change should come:

Si el hombre muriere, ¿volverá a vivir? Todos los días de mi edad esperaré, Hasta que venga mi liberación.

15 T hou wouldest call, and I would answer thee; thou wouldest have a desire after the work of thy hands.

Entonces llamarás, y yo te responderé; Tendrás afecto a la hechura de tus manos.

16 F or now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

Pero ahora me cuentas los pasos, Y no das tregua a mi pecado;

17 M y transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou heapest up mine iniquity.

Tienes sellada en saco mi prevaricación, Y tienes cosida mi iniquidad.

18 A nd indeed a mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of its place;

Ciertamente el monte que cae se deshace, Y las peñas son removidas de su lugar;

19 T he waters wear the stones, the floods thereof wash away the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

Las piedras se desgastan con el agua impetuosa, que se lleva el polvo de la tierra; De igual manera haces tú perecer la esperanza del hombre.

20 T hou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth away; thou changest his countenance, and dismissest him.

Para siempre serás más fuerte que él, y él se va; Demudarás su rostro, y le despedirás.

21 H is sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, and he perceiveth it not.

Sus hijos tendrán honores, pero él no lo sabrá; O serán humillados, y no entenderá de ello.

22 B ut his flesh hath pain for himself alone, and his soul mourneth for himself.

Mas su carne sobre él se dolerá, Y se entristecerá en él su alma.
