1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

3 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.

El prudente ve el mal y se esconde, Pero los simples siguen adelante y son castigados.

4 B y humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life.

La recompensa de la humildad y el temor del Señor Son la riqueza, el honor y la vida.

5 T horns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them.

Espinos y lazos hay en el camino del perverso; El que cuida su alma se alejará de ellos.

6 T rain up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Instruye al niño en el camino que debe andar, Y aun cuando sea viejo no se apartará de él.

7 T he rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

El rico domina a los pobres, Y el deudor es esclavo del acreedor.

8 H e that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.

El que siembra iniquidad segará vanidad, Y la vara de su furor perecerá.

9 H e that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.

El generoso será bendito, Porque da de su pan al pobre.

10 C ast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease.

Echa fuera al insolente y saldrá la discordia, Y cesarán también los pleitos y la ignominia.

11 H e that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.

El que ama la pureza de corazón Tiene gracia en sus labios, y el rey es su amigo.

12 T he eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor.

Los ojos del Señor guardan el conocimiento, Pero El confunde las palabras del engañador.

13 T he slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.

El perezoso dice: “Hay un león afuera; Seré muerto en las calles.”

14 T he mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the Lord shall fall therein.

Fosa profunda es la boca de las mujeres extrañas; El que es maldito del Señor caerá en ella.

15 F oolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

La necedad está ligada al corazón del niño, Pero la vara de la disciplina lo alejará de ella.

16 H e that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.

El que oprime al pobre para engrandecerse, O da al rico, sólo llegará a la pobreza. Preceptos y Amonestaciones

17 B ow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge.

Inclina tu oído y oye las palabras de los sabios, Y aplica tu corazón a mi conocimiento;

18 F or it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips.

Porque te será agradable si las guardas dentro de ti, Para que estén listas en tus labios.

19 T hat thy trust may be in the Lord, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.

Para que tu confianza esté en el Señor, Te he instruido hoy a ti también.

20 H ave not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge,

¿No te he escrito cosas excelentes De consejo y conocimiento,

21 T hat I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?

Para hacerte saber la certeza de las palabras de verdad A fin de que respondas correctamente al que te ha enviado ?

22 R ob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:

No robes al pobre, porque es pobre, Ni aplastes al afligido en la puerta;

23 F or the Lord will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

Porque el Señor defenderá su causa Y quitará la vida de los que los despojan.

24 M ake no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:

No te asocies con el hombre iracundo, Ni andes con el hombre violento,

25 L est thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.

No sea que aprendas sus maneras Y tiendas lazo para ti mismo.

26 B e not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts.

No estés entre los que dan fianzas, Entre los que salen de fiadores de préstamos.

27 I f thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?

Si no tienes con qué pagar, ¿Por qué han de quitarte la cama de debajo de ti ?

28 R emove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.

No muevas el lindero antiguo Que pusieron tus padres.

29 S eest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.

¿Has visto un hombre diestro en su trabajo? Estará delante de los reyes; No estará delante de hombres sin importancia.
