1 M oreover Job continued his parable, and said,

Job retomó la palabra y dijo:

2 O h that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;

«¡Cómo quisiera volver a los tiempos pasados, a los días en que Dios me brindaba protección;

3 w hen his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;

días en que su lámpara brillaba sobre mí, días en que a su luz andaba yo en la oscuridad,

4 a s I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;

cuando estaba yo en la flor de mi vida y el favor de Dios reposaba en mi hogar.

5 w hen the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;

En aquel tiempo, el Omnipotente estaba conmigo, y mis hijos estaban en derredor mío;

6 w hen I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil;

me daba entonces el lujo de chapotear en leche, y de extraer de las piedras torrentes de aceite;

7 w hen I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street!

cuando salía yo a las puertas de la ciudad, me cedían un lugar para impartir justicia.

8 T he young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up.

Los jóvenes, al verme, me cedían el paso, y los ancianos me recibían de pie.

9 T he princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth.

La gente importante se quedaba callada, y con respeto se tapaban la boca.

10 T he nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.

A pesar de ser poderosos, guardaban silencio, como si la lengua se les quedara pegada.

11 W hen the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:

“Bienaventurado”, me decían al escucharme, y los que me veían lo confirmaban.

12 b ecause I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.

»Y es que yo atendía el clamor de los pobres, y ayudaba a los huérfanos sin protección.

13 T he blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.

Los que estaban por morir me bendecían; a las viudas les alegraba el corazón.

14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.

La justicia caracterizaba mis actos; la justicia me cubría: era mi atuendo.

15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.

Para los ciegos, yo era sus ojos; para los cojos, yo era sus pies;

16 I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.

para los pobres, yo era su padre; para los extranjeros, yo era su defensor.

17 A nd I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

Yo aplacaba la furia de los malvados, y a sus víctimas las libraba de su poder.

18 T hen I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.

Creía yo que moriría en mi lecho, y que tendría muchos años de vida.

19 M y root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.

Creí ser como un árbol plantado junto al agua, con verdes ramas, bañadas de rocío;

20 M y glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand.

Creí también que podría ser más rico, y que en mis manos mi poder iría en aumento.

21 U nto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.

»Cuando yo hablaba, todo el mundo callaba y esperaba a escuchar mis consejos.

22 A fter my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.

Nadie contradecía mis advertencias, sino que aceptaban con gusto mis razones.

23 A nd they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.

Se quedaban a la espera de mis palabras, como tierra seca en espera de las lluvias tardías.

24 I f I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.

Apenas podían creer que yo les sonriera; y no se perdían una sola de mis sonrisas.

25 I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.

Yo decidía lo que tenían que hacer, y en la mesa yo ocupaba la cabecera; era como un rey al frente de su ejército, ¡como alguien que consuela a los que lloran!
