1 A lso I in the first year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen him.

»Durante el primer año del reinado de Darío el medo, yo mismo estuve a su lado para animarlo y fortalecerlo. Los reyes del norte y del sur

2 A nd now will I shew thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia.

»Ahora te daré a conocer la verdad. Todavía habrá tres reyes en Persia, y hasta un cuarto rey, el cual llegará a ser más rico que los otros tres. Cuando sienta que sus riquezas le dan poder, invitará a todos ellos a levantarse contra el reino de Grecia.

3 A nd a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will.

Luego se levantará un rey muy valiente, el cual ejercerá su dominio haciendo gala de poder e implantando su voluntad,

4 A nd when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.

pero en cuanto se levante su reino, se dividirá y se esparcirá por los cuatro vientos del cielo, pero no entre sus descendientes ni con el mismo dominio que antes ejerció, porque su reino será arrancado de raíz y entregado a otros fuera de ellos.

5 A nd the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; and he shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominion shall be a great dominion.

»El rey del sur cobrará fuerza, pero uno de sus príncipes llegará a ser más fuerte y poderoso que él, y grande será su dominio.

6 A nd in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the king’s daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement: but she shall not retain the power of the arm; neither shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up, and they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened her in these times.

Al cabo de algunos años habrá una alianza: la hija del rey del sur se casará con el rey del norte, y se hará la paz. Pero ella no podrá mantener su fuerza, ni él podrá permanecer en el poder, sino que ella será traicionada, junto con su hijo y los que la acompañaron, y con los que en ese tiempo estaban de su parte.

7 B ut out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate, which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and shall deal against them, and shall prevail:

»Pero de sus raíces surgirá un renuevo, uno de sus descendientes, y ocupará el trono. Con su ejército atacará al rey del norte y tomará la fortaleza, y luego de vencerlo hará con él lo que se le antoje.

8 a nd shall also carry captives into Egypt their gods, with their princes, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and he shall continue more years than the king of the north.

Hasta se llevará a Egipto sus dioses e imágenes fundidas, lo mismo que sus objetos preciosos de plata y de oro, y durante muchos años se mantendrá en contra del rey del norte.

9 S o the king of the south shall come into his kingdom, and shall return into his own land.

Luego incursionará en el territorio del rey del sur, y entonces volverá a su país.

10 B ut his sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude of great forces: and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through: then shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his fortress.

»Más tarde, sus hijos reunirán a un ejército muy numeroso y, como una inundación, se lanzarán al ataque y lo arrasarán todo, llevando la guerra hasta la fortaleza.

11 A nd the king of the south shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth and fight with him, even with the king of the north: and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand.

Esto despertará la ira del rey del sur, que con un gran ejército saldrá a pelear contra el rey del norte, y librará una gran batalla, en la que éste será derrotado a pesar de contar con un gran ejército.

12 A nd when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it.

Al volver con el botín, se llenará de soberbia y ejecutará gente por millares, aunque no prevalecerá

13 F or the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches.

porque el rey del norte volverá con un ejército más numeroso que el primero, y al cabo de algunos años volverá a hacerle la guerra.

14 A nd in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south: also the robbers of thy people shall exalt themselves to establish the vision; but they shall fall.

»Entonces muchos se levantarán en armas contra el rey del sur, y también de tu pueblo se levantará gente violenta, para cumplir la visión, pero no podrán vencer.

15 S o the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities: and the arms of the south shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand.

Vendrá luego el rey del norte y levantará baluartes, y tomará la ciudad fuerte, y las fuerzas del sur no podrán resistir ni con sus mejores tropas, porque se quedarán sin fuerzas.

16 B ut he that cometh against him shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be consumed.

El ejército que los ataque hará todo lo que quiera hacer, y no habrá nadie que se le pueda enfrentar; llegará hasta la tierra gloriosa, y ésta será consumida bajo su poder.

17 H e shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus shall he do: and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her: but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him.

Después se preparará para venir con todas las fuerzas de su reino, y hará un pacto con el rey del sur, y para destruirlo le dará como esposa una de sus hijas, pero no logrará vencerlo.

18 A fter this shall he turn his face unto the isles, and shall take many: but a prince for his own behalf shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him.

Se dirigirá entonces a los países de las costas, y a muchos los conquistará, pero un príncipe pondrá fin a su afrenta, y hasta logrará revertir sobre él esa afrenta.

19 T hen he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land: but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found.

Se volverá entonces contra las fortalezas de su tierra, pero fracasará en su intento y nunca más se sabrá de él.

20 T hen shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.

»Después de él se levantará uno que mandará recaudar tributos para mantener el lustre de su reino, pero muy pronto será derrocado, aunque no morirá en el campo de batalla.

21 A nd in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

Será sucedido por un hombre despreciable, que no recibirá los honores debidos a un rey, pero que vendrá sin aviso y usurpará el trono por medio de zalamerías.

22 A nd with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant.

Delante de él las fuerzas contrarias serán derrotadas por completo, barridas como por una inundación, y con ellas perecerá el príncipe del pacto.

23 A nd after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.

A los que pacten con él los engañará y los atacará, y los vencerá con un ejército reducido.

24 H e shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time.

Cuando la provincia se encuentre en paz y con abundancia, la atacará y hará en ella lo que nunca hicieron sus padres, ni los padres de sus padres, pues repartirá entre sus soldados el botín de guerra, y los despojos y riquezas, y llevará a cabo sus planes contra las fortalezas, aunque sólo por cierto tiempo.

25 A nd he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him.

Con encono incitará a sus fuerzas, un gran ejército, a lanzarse contra el rey del sur; y el rey del sur entrará en batalla con un ejército muy numeroso y fuerte, pero no podrá vencerlo porque será traicionado.

26 Y ea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain.

Aun los que comían con él lo traicionarán, y su ejército será derrotado, y muchos perderán la vida.

27 A nd both these kings’ hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.

Estos dos reyes sólo pensarán en perjudicar al otro, y en la misma mesa se engañarán; pero esto no les servirá de nada, porque el plazo aún no se habrá cumplido.

28 T hen shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land.

Entonces el rey del norte volverá a su país con grandes riquezas, aunque antes se propondrá dañar al pacto santo, y luego de satisfacer sus deseos regresará a su tierra.

29 A t the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter.

»En el momento señalado, este rey volverá al sur, aunque este último ataque no será como el primero,

30 F or the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.

porque las naves de Quitín lo atacarán y lo humillarán, aunque él, en su enojo, se volverá contra el pacto santo y hará lo que se le antoje, pero se mostrará amable con los que abandonen el santo pacto.

31 A nd arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.

Sus tropas se dedicarán a profanar el santuario y la fortaleza, y suspenderán el sacrificio continuo y en su lugar pondrán la abominación desoladora.

32 A nd such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.

A los que violen el pacto él los seducirá con engaños, pero el pueblo que conoce a su Dios se le opondrá con todas sus fuerzas.

33 A nd they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days.

Los sabios del pueblo instruirán a muchos, aunque por algún tiempo morirán a filo de espada o en el fuego, o serán llevados cautivos y despojados de sus propiedades.

34 N ow when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries.

Al caer, pocos serán los que les ayuden, aunque muchos fingirán apoyarlos.

35 A nd some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.

También algunos de los sabios caerán, para ser depurados, limpiados y emblanquecidos hasta el momento señalado, porque aun para esto hay un plazo establecido.

36 A nd the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.

»El rey hará todo lo que quiera, y tanta será su soberbia que se creerá más grande que cualquier dios; hablará con insolencia contra el Dios de los dioses, y tendrá éxito mientras la ira de Dios no llegue a su límite, porque lo que ha sido determinado se cumplirá.

37 N either shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

Será tal su soberbia que no mostrará ningún respeto por los dioses de sus padres, ni por los dioses de sus mujeres, ni por ningún otro dios, porque se creerá mayor que todos ellos.

38 B ut in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.

En cambio, honrará al dios de las fortalezas, dios que sus padres no conocieron, y lo honrará con oro y plata, y con piedras preciosas y con objetos muy costosos.

39 T hus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.

Con la ayuda de un dios ajeno tomará las fortalezas más inexpugnables, colmará de honores a los que le reconozcan, y repartirá la tierra a cambio de dinero.

40 A nd at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

»Cuando llegue el momento del fin, el rey del sur luchará contra el rey del norte, y éste se levantará contra aquél como una tempestad, con carros de guerra y gente de a caballo, y con muchas naves, y lo atacará por tierra, y lo arrasará como una inundación.

41 H e shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.

Invadirá la tierra gloriosa, y muchas provincias serán conquistadas, aunque Edom y Moab, y la mayoría de los hijos de Amón lograrán escapar.

42 H e shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.

Extenderá su mano contra muchos países, y ni Egipto podrá librarse de él.

43 B ut he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

Se apoderará de los tesoros de oro y plata de Egipto, y de todos sus objetos preciosos, y luego se apoderará de las riquezas de Libia y de Etiopía.

44 B ut tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.

Pero cuando se entere de las noticias del oriente y del norte se llenará de temor y, lleno de ira, saldrá para destruir y matar a muchos.

45 A nd he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.

Plantará las tiendas de su palacio entre los mares y el monte santo y glorioso, pero su fin llegará y no habrá nadie que lo ayude.
