1 N ow Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

Jefté el galaadita era un hombre valiente y aguerrido, hijo de una ramera. Su padre se llamaba Galaad.

2 A nd Gilead’s wife bare him sons; and his wife’s sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.

La mujer de Galaad tuvo otros hijos de éste que, cuando crecieron, corrieron de su casa a Jefté, y lo amenazaron diciéndole: «Tú no recibirás ninguna herencia de nuestro padre, porque no eres hijo de nuestra madre sino de otra mujer.»

3 T hen Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.

Fue así como Jefté huyó de sus hermanos y se fue a vivir a la región de Tob. Allí se juntó con unos vagabundos, y ellos comenzaron a salir con él.

4 A nd it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

Tiempo después, los amonitas pelearon contra los israelitas,

5 A nd it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:

y los ancianos de Galaad llamaron a Jefté, que vivía en Tob,

6 a nd they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

y le dijeron: «Ven con nosotros para combatir a los amonitas. Tú serás nuestro jefe.»

7 A nd Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

Pero Jefté les respondió: «Ustedes no me quieren. ¡Hasta me corrieron de la casa de mi padre! ¿Por qué vienen a pedirme ayuda, ahora que están en problemas?»

8 A nd the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

Y los ancianos le respondieron: «Precisamente por eso, porque estamos en problemas, te pedimos que vengas y pelees con nosotros contra los amonitas. Tú serás el caudillo de todos los que vivimos en Galaad.»

9 A nd Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the Lord deliver them before me, shall I be your head?

Jefté les respondió: «Ustedes me piden volver, para que pelee contra los amonitas. Y, si el Señor me da la victoria, ¿seré el caudillo de ustedes?»

10 A nd the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The Lord be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.

Los ancianos de Galaad le respondieron: «El Señor es nuestro testigo. Haremos lo tú nos ordenes.»

11 T hen Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the Lord in Mizpeh.

Entonces Jefté se fue con los ancianos de Galaad, y el pueblo lo nombró su caudillo y jefe, pero en Mispá repitió ante el Señor todo lo que antes había dicho.

12 A nd Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?

Luego, envió un mensaje al rey de los amonitas, en que le decía: «¿Qué tienes tú contra mí? ¿Por qué quieres atacar mi tierra?»

13 A nd the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.

Al mensaje de Jefté, el rey respondió: «Cuando Israel vino de Egipto, se adueñó de mi tierra, que va desde Arnón hasta Jaboc y el Jordán. Eso es lo que peleo. Devuélveme esa tierra, y viviremos en paz.»

14 A nd Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon:

Jefté volvió a enviar mensajeros al rey de los amonitas,

15 a nd said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon:

y le dijo: «Yo, Jefté, te digo: Israel no se adueñó de la tierra de Moab, ni de la tierra de los amonitas.

16 b ut when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;

Cuando el pueblo de Israel salió de Egipto y cruzó el desierto hasta el Mar Rojo, llegó a Cades.

17 t hen Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.

Entonces el pueblo de Israel envió mensajeros al rey de Edom, y le pidió permiso para pasar por su territorio; pero el rey de Edom no los escuchó. También pidió permiso al rey de Moab, pero él tampoco les permitió pasar, así que Israel se quedó en Cades.

18 T hen they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab.

Después, anduvo por el desierto y rodeó las tierras de Edom y de Moab por el oriente, y luego acampó al otro lado del río Arnón, pero no entró en territorio de Moab, pues en Arnón empezaba su territorio.

19 A nd Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.

Además, Israel envió mensajeros a Sijón, el rey de los amorreos y de Jesbón, y le dijo: “Te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu territorio, para llegar a mi destino.”

20 B ut Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

Pero a Sijón no le inspiró confianza Israel, y tampoco lo dejó pasar por su territorio, sino que reunió a su ejército, acampó en Yahás, y peleó contra Israel.

21 A nd the Lord God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

Pero el Señor, Dios de Israel, entregó a Sijón y a todo su ejército en manos del pueblo de Israel, y éstos se apoderaron de toda la tierra de los amorreos.

22 A nd they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan.

Tomaron también el territorio de los amorreos, desde Arnón hasta Jaboc, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.

23 S o now the Lord God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?

¿Y ahora tú pretendes apoderarte de ese territorio?

24 W ilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the Lord our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.

Si tu dios Quemos te diera algo, ¿no sería tuyo? De igual manera, todo lo que el Señor nuestro Dios nos entregó, nos pertenece.

25 A nd now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,

¿En qué eres mejor que Balac hijo de Sipor, rey de Moab? ¿Tuvo algún problema contra Israel, para que le hiciera la guerra?

26 w hile Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?

Durante trescientos años Israel ha habitado en Jesbón y Aroer y en todas las ciudades del territorio de Arnón. ¿Por qué nunca antes han reclamado esa tierra?

27 W herefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the Lord the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

De modo que yo no he pecado contra ti, pero tú sí haces mal al querer pelear contra mí. Que el Señor, que es el Juez, juzgue entre los israelitas y los amonitas.»

28 H owbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

Pero como el rey de los amonitas no quiso entender las razones de Jefté,

29 T hen the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

el espíritu del Señor vino sobre Jefté, y éste recorrió Galaad y Manasés y Mispá de Galaad, para luchar contra los amonitas.

30 A nd Jephthah vowed a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,

Allí Jefté hizo un juramento al Señor, y le dijo: «Si me das la victoria sobre los amonitas,

31 t hen it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.

cuando yo regrese de la batalla te ofreceré en holocausto a quien primero salga a recibirme.»

32 S o Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the Lord delivered them into his hands.

Luego, Jefté avanzó contra los amonitas y peleó contra ellos, y con la ayuda del Señor los venció:

33 A nd he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

los destruyó por completo, y conquistó Aroer hasta Minit, y sus veinte ciudades, hasta los llanos de las viñas. Así fue como los israelitas sometieron a los amonitas.

34 A nd Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.

Cuando Jefté volvió a su casa en Mispá, su hija salió a recibirlo con panderos y danzas. Jefté no tenía más hijos, sino que ella era su única hija,

35 A nd it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the Lord, and I cannot go back.

así que al momento de verla rasgó sus vestiduras y rompió en llanto: «¡Ay, hija mía! ¡Qué desgracia la mía! ¡Y tú eres la causa de mi dolor, por la promesa que le hice al Señor! ¡Y no me puedo retractar!»

36 A nd she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the Lord, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the Lord hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.

Pero ella le respondió: «Padre mío, si le has dado tu palabra al Señor, cumple tu promesa, pues él te usó para vengarte de tus enemigos, los amonitas.»

37 A nd she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.

Y le hizo una petición a su padre: «Concédeme dos meses para ir por los montes, con mis amigas. Déjame llorar por mi virginidad.»

38 A nd he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

Y Jefté le concedió los dos meses, y la dejó ir. Entonces ella salió con sus compañeras, y recorrieron los montes lamentando que moriría virgen.

39 A nd it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,

Pasados los dos meses, ella volvió con su padre para que éste cumpliera su promesa al Señor. Ella nunca tuvo relaciones con un hombre.

40 t hat the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

A partir de entonces fue costumbre en Israel que, cada año, todas las doncellas de Israel lloraran durante cuatro días por la hija de Jefté el galaadita.
