1 T hese be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

Estas palabras las pronunció Moisés ante todo Israel en la ribera oriental del río Jordán, en el desierto, en el Arabá, frente al Mar Rojo, entre Parán, Tofel, Labán, Jaserot y Dizahab.

2 ( There are eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea.)

Desde Horeb hasta Cadés Barnea, por el camino al monte Seir, se hacen once días de camino.

3 A nd it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the Lord had given him in commandment unto them;

Moisés habló con los hijos de Israel, en conformidad con todo lo que el Señor les había ordenado por medio de él. Les habló el día primero del mes undécimo del año cuarenta,

4 a fter he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei:

después de haber derrotado a Sijón, el rey de los amorreos que reinaba en Jesbón, y a Og, el rey de Basán que reinaba en Astarot, en Edrey.

5 o n this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,

Moisés resolvió exponer esta ley cuando estaba ya en tierra de Moab, de este lado del Jordán. Y dijo:

6 T he Lord our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount:

«El Señor nuestro Dios nos habló en Horeb. Nos dijo: “Ustedes han estado ya bastante tiempo en este monte.

7 t urn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.

Ahora diríjanse a los montes de los amorreos y a todas sus comarcas en el Arabá, en los montes y en los valles, en el Néguev y hasta la orilla del mar, a la tierra de los cananeos, al Líbano y hasta el gran río Éufrates.

8 B ehold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.

Miren, yo les he entregado la tierra; ¡entren y tomen posesión de ella! Es la tierra que yo, el Señor, juré dar a Abrahán, Isaac y Jacob, antepasados de ustedes, y a su descendencia.” Nombramiento de jueces

9 A nd I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone:

»En aquel entonces yo les dije a ustedes: “Yo solo no puedo sobrellevarlos.

10 t he Lord your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.

El Señor su Dios los ha multiplicado, y ahora ustedes son tan numerosos como las estrellas del cielo.

11 ( The Lord God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!)

¡Que el Señor y Dios de sus padres los haga mil veces más numerosos de lo que ahora son! ¡Que los bendiga, como les ha prometido!

12 H ow can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?

Porque yo solo, ¿cómo podría sobrellevar sus molestias, sus cargas y sus pleitos?

13   Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.

Denme de entre las tribus de ustedes algunos hombres sabios y entendidos, y con experiencia, para que yo los ponga al frente de ustedes.”

14 A nd ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do.

Y ustedes me respondieron, y dijeron: “Está bien hacer lo que dices.”

15 S o I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.

»Tomé entonces de entre los jefes de sus tribus a hombres sabios y con experiencia, y los puse al frente de ustedes como jefes de millares, de centenas, y de grupos de cincuenta y de diez hombres, y como gobernadores de sus tribus.

16 A nd I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.

Ese día les ordené a sus jueces: “Presten atención a sus hermanos. Sean justos con cada uno de ellos, y con los extranjeros.

17 Y e shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.

Al dictar sentencia, no hagan distinción de personas, sino que deben atender lo mismo al débil que al poderoso. No tengan miedo de nadie, porque el juicio es de Dios. Si se les presenta un caso difícil, pásenmelo a mí, y yo lo atenderé.”

18 A nd I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.

Así que ese día les dije todo lo que debían hacer. Misión de los doce espías

19 A nd when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.

»Cuando salimos de Horeb, anduvimos por todo ese desierto grande y terrible que ya han visto. Anduvimos por el camino de los montes amorreos, tal y como el Señor nuestro Dios nos lo ordenó, hasta llegar a Cadés Barnea.

20 A nd I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the Lord our God doth give unto us.

Entonces les dije: “Ustedes han llegado a estos montes de los amorreos, que el Señor nuestro Dios nos da.

21 B ehold, the Lord thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.

Dense cuenta de que el Señor su Dios les ha entregado la tierra. ¡Adelante! Tomen posesión de ella, conforme a la promesa del Señor, el Dios de sus antepasados. ¡No teman ni desmayen!”

22 A nd ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.

»Entonces todos ustedes vinieron a verme, y dijeron: “Enviemos algunos de nosotros que vayan y exploren la tierra, y que vuelvan y nos informen qué camino debemos seguir y a qué ciudades debemos llegar.”

23 A nd the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe:

Lo que ustedes me dijeron me pareció bien, así que escogí a doce de ustedes, un hombre por cada tribu.

24 a nd they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out.

Y ellos partieron y subieron al monte, y llegaron hasta el valle de Escol y exploraron la tierra.

25 A nd they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the Lord our God doth give us.

Trajeron consigo algunos frutos del país, y nos dieron este informe: “La tierra que el Señor nuestro Dios nos da es muy buena.”

26 N otwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God:

Sin embargo, ustedes no quisieron ir, sino que se rebelaron al mandato del Señor su Dios

27 a nd ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the Lord hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

y en sus tiendas murmuraban y decían: “El Señor nos aborrece. Por eso nos ha sacado de Egipto: ¡para entregarnos en manos de los amorreos, para destruirnos!

28 W hither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.

¿A dónde iremos? Nuestros hermanos nos han descorazonado al decir que esa gente es más alta y más fuerte que nosotros; que sus ciudades son grandes, con murallas que llegan hasta el cielo, y que además allí vieron a los anaquitas.”

29 T hen I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.

Pero yo les dije: “No teman. No les tengan miedo.

30 T he Lord your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;

El Señor su Dios va delante de ustedes, y él peleará por ustedes, como antes vieron que lo hizo por ustedes en Egipto.

31 a nd in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the Lord thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.

Además, ustedes son testigos de que, en el desierto, y por todo el camino que han recorrido, el Señor su Dios los ha traído como un padre que lleva a su hijo de la mano, hasta llegar a este lugar.”

32 Y et in this thing ye did not believe the Lord your God,

Aun así, ustedes no creyeron en el Señor su Dios,

33 w ho went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day.

que iba por el camino delante de ustedes para explorar el lugar donde ustedes habrían de acampar. De noche, les mostraba con fuego el camino por donde debían ir, y de día los guiaba con una nube. Dios castiga a Israel

34 A nd the Lord heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying,

»Cuando el Señor oyó lo que ustedes dijeron, se enojó y, con un juramento, dijo:

35 S urely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers,

“Ninguno de éstos verá la buena tierra que prometí a sus padres que les daría. ¡Son una generación malvada!

36 s ave Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed the Lord.

Sólo la verá Caleb hijo de Yefune. A él y a sus hijos les daré la tierra que él pisó, porque me ha seguido fielmente.”

37 A lso the Lord was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither.

»También por culpa de ustedes el Señor se enojó contra mí, y me dijo: “Tampoco tú entrarás allá.

38 B ut Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

Quien entrará será Josué hijo de Nun, el cual te sirve. Anímalo, porque él le dará a Israel posesión de la tierra.

39 M oreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.

También entrarán allá sus hijos, esos niños que no saben hoy lo que es bueno ni lo que es malo, y de los cuales dijeron que servirían de botín de guerra. A ellos y a sus hijos les daré la tierra. Ellos serán quienes la reciban en propiedad.

40 B ut as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

En cuanto a ustedes, den la vuelta y diríjanse al desierto, en dirección al Mar Rojo.” La derrota en Jormá

41 T hen ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the Lord, we will go up and fight, according to all that the Lord our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.

»Ustedes respondieron, y me dijeron: “Hemos pecado contra el Señor. Pero iremos y pelearemos, tal y como el Señor nuestro Dios nos lo ha ordenado.” Y cada uno de ustedes tomó sus armas y se preparó para subir al monte.

42 A nd the Lord said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.

Entonces el Señor me dijo: “Diles que no suban ni peleen, porque yo no estoy con ellos. De lo contrario, serán derrotados por sus enemigos.”

43 S o I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the Lord, and went presumptuously up into the hill.

Y yo hablé con ustedes, pero ustedes no me hicieron caso. Al contrario, fueron rebeldes al mandato del Señor y con gran arrogancia subieron al monte.

44 A nd the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.

Pero los amorreos, que habitaban en aquel monte, salieron a su encuentro y los persiguieron como avispas hasta Jormá, y los derrotaron en Seir.

45 A nd ye returned and wept before the Lord; but the Lord would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.

Entonces ustedes volvieron y lloraron delante del Señor, pero el Señor no escuchó su voz, ni les hizo caso.

46 S o ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.

Fue así como ustedes estuvieron en Cades muchos días, es decir, todo el tiempo que han estado allí.
