1 W hat then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?

¿Qué, pues, diremos que halló Abraham, nuestro padre según la carne?

2 F or if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.

Si Abraham hubiera sido justificado por las obras, tendría de qué gloriarse, pero no ante Dios,

3 F or what does the Scripture say? “ Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”

pues ¿qué dice la Escritura? Creyó Abraham a Dios y le fue contado por justicia.

4 N ow to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due.

Pero al que trabaja no se le cuenta el salario como un regalo, sino como deuda;

5 B ut to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,

pero al que no trabaja, sino cree en aquel que justifica al impío, su fe le es contada por justicia.

6 j ust as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

Por eso también David habla de la bienaventuranza del hombre a quien Dios atribuye justicia sin obras,

7 “ Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven, And whose sins have been covered.

diciendo: «Bienaventurados aquellos cuyas iniquidades son perdonadas, y cuyos pecados son cubiertos.

8 “ Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account.”

Bienaventurado el hombre a quien el Señor no culpa de pecado.»

9 I s this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, “ Faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.”

¿Es, pues, esta bienaventuranza solamente para los de la circuncisión o también para los de la incircuncisión? Porque decimos que a Abraham le fue contada la fe por justicia.

10 H ow then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised;

¿Cómo, pues, le fue contada? ¿Estando en la circuncisión, o en la incircuncisión? No en la circuncisión, sino en la incircuncisión.

11 a nd he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them,

Y recibió la circuncisión como señal, como sello de la justicia de la fe que tuvo cuando aún no había sido circuncidado, para que fuera padre de todos los creyentes no circuncidados, a fin de que también a ellos la fe les sea contada por justicia;

12 a nd the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.

y padre de la circuncisión, para los que no solamente son de la circuncisión, sino que también siguen las pisadas de la fe que tuvo nuestro padre Abraham antes de ser circuncidado. La promesa realizada mediante la fe

13 F or the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith.

La promesa de que sería heredero del mundo, fue dada a Abraham o a su descendencia no por la Ley sino por la justicia de la fe,

14 F or if those who are of the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified;

porque si los que son de la Ley son los herederos, vana resulta la fe y anulada la promesa.

15 f or the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no violation.

La ley produce ira; pero donde no hay Ley, tampoco hay transgresión.

16 F or this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,

Por eso, la promesa es fe, para que sea por gracia, a fin de que sea firme para toda su descendencia, no solamente para la que es por la Ley, sino también para la que es de la fe de Abraham. Él es padre de todos nosotros,

17 ( as it is written, “ A father of many nations have I made you ”) in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist.

como está escrito: «Te he puesto por padre de muchas naciones.» Y lo es delante de Dios, a quien creyó, el cual da vida a los muertos y llama las cosas que no son como si fueran.

18 I n hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, “ So shall your descendants be.”

Él creyó en esperanza contra esperanza, para llegar a ser padre de muchas naciones, conforme a lo que se le había dicho: «Así será tu descendencia.»

19 W ithout becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb;

Y su fe no se debilitó al considerar su cuerpo, que estaba ya como muerto (siendo de casi cien años), o la esterilidad de la matriz de Sara.

20 y et, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God,

Tampoco dudó, por incredulidad, de la promesa de Dios, sino que se fortaleció por la fe, dando gloria a Dios,

21 a nd being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform.

plenamente convencido de que era también poderoso para hacer todo lo que había prometido.

22 T herefore it was also credited to him as righteousness.

Por eso, también su fe le fue contada por justicia.

23 N ow not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him,

Pero no sólo con respecto a él se escribió que le fue contada,

24 b ut for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,

sino también con respecto a nosotros a quienes igualmente ha de ser contada, es decir, a los que creemos en aquel que levantó de los muertos a Jesús, Señor nuestro,

25 H e who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.

el cual fue entregado por nuestras transgresiones, y resucitado para nuestra justificación.
